I was curious because quite often I see it but i've never been able to read what brand is written on the headstock....I have this old book with a lot of pics on it, it's about jazz and talks about instruments and records and such (I bough it for few cents at a sale because of big nice pics of classic jazz records covers..).
In this book the electric bass section is built around pics of a dude showing some playing technique...nothing really interesting but the bass used was this one that i wasn't able to recognise..
well now i know what it is..

Is there anybody that can identify this bass? What brand?

I miss a lot the great stuff that was released in that period by sst..early huskers, minutemen, meat puppets...zen arcade and double nickels on the dime are two monuments for American music.. I wonder where Greg Norton has gone..bob mould and grant hart have kept on releasing stuff somehow during the years, but the bassist and his demode' 70's moustaches just disappeared from the scenes ..great shot that pic!

One thing that I have found no info about ...

Looking at 70's jazz basses I have seen sometimes that the necks have the binding covering the frets ends. If you look at this picture in the page (search in page for Binding Nubs) :

you can see what I mean (in the pic there is a Les Paul, but the concept applies to fender jazzes too).

Sometimes the frets are placed over the binding and have the frets end filed as happens in unbound necks. I've seen that all the time in modern japan reissues, for example.

I wonder if the original in the seventies had the binding nubs covering fret ends (and so the ones that do not have it have been refretted or simply filed away) or if both ways of binding a neck in the factory were actually used, maybe in different periods..

I know that I'm splitting hairs here..but maybe fender experts have some info about it.

I'd like to see a short scale doublecut slab body EB-0 just like the one that came before the classic sg shape.
It could be equipped with the dual pickup system present in current SG bass for parts reuse, even if a single pickup version would be the best. A cheap faded finish cherry and walnut would be great.

Great sound from that maple necked shifted mudbucker 70s eb3!

I own a 78 EB3 and I love its sound.
I'm always after a deep and fat and dark "dubby" bass sound and I can get plenty of it from varitone pos 1 (free mud, methinks), 4 (mud + notch filter, compacting a bit the sound with tone rolled off or adding some bite if more open) and 3 (mud+bridge pickup adding a bit of edge to the attack).
Bridge pickup alone is not bad at all...i'd dare to say even a little bit fenderjazzish if you play by the bridge.

One thing that sometimes I keep on wondering is about the difference in pure mudbucker sound for 60's all mahogany EBs vs. the seventies maple necked ones. A question for someone that owns both kinds of EB basses and can hear them on the exact same system.
How much ultralows (percentage..if it makes any sense) impact got lost in transitionin from a 60 EB to a 70 EB?

iIt looks realy nice, but i wonder about the tone. By the way it seems that MF is the only place where it can be found. Availability in europe is non clear as far i undrestand..Any info?

in italy an SG guitar or bass or even clones with the same shape are usually known as "diavoletto" that stands for little devil. so red devil sounds a bit familiar as a nickname

unfortunately it seems not available in Europe as far as I have seen...is that true?
If I were in USA I'd buy it without exitation (110 or so $)...but with shipping and all it is not worth the effort maybe.

Well..yes there is some bass...and there is a distinct mahogany sound in the tone..The guitar is very resonant unplugged by the way. Currently I have used a set of TI jazz rounds that I had around because I was afraid of stressing too much the neck with bass strings tension and because I needed to cut the strings to make them fit on the 25'' scale and be able to wrap the ends on the thin posts..a thing that you cannot do -say-with labella flats for sure!

Now I want to try to swap the P100 pickup with an actual bass pickup..I have the temptation to route for a mudbucker placed against the end of the neck but maybe it is a too deep route to dig..I'm afraid of destroying the guitar..

Anyway, having the pickup so close to the bridge like it is now makes for an interesting tone..
