Gibson Basses / Skinned a TB+ last night
« on: May 20, 2009, 09:51:28 AM »
And the operation went much more easily than anticipated. It was a piece of cake actually. I made a few cuts around the edges with a hack saw, and started peeling the plastic off with a screwdriver. Then, slid the guts right into an NOS 70s chrome cover. They clearly used the exact inside dims of the old chrome covers when they designed the plastic ones. It's a perfect, snug fit. Droppin in to a BaCHbird tonight.

Report:  this bass is awesome.

+1! I could seriously see this thing becoming my #1. Droppin in a TB+ tonight. Might add a kill switch eventually as I like to do the Townsend/Frehley stuttering feedback thing a lot.

Thank God, someone finally said it. My feelings exactly. Utterly non-descript bunch. Only redeeming factor is how the bass player can be seen with an old Ripper lately. Even Nicklebag is better.

OK, first off - to each his own. But.... You guys are out of your minds!  :P Foos have some fantastically composed pop songs with great melodies and TONS of emotion. Ya wanna talk about generic rock - try Bad Co!  :bored: LOL! And even if their material was that bad, their performance at the VH1 Who Rock Honors was enough to redeem them. Any time my cover band does one of their songs (which is every show) it gets a HUGE response.

Picked mine up at the post office this morning. I love it! The neck is seriously great. Super slim. Reminds me a little of my 4001CS. Fret work seems good. I immediately mounted a strap lock at the heel of the neck. It balances a million times better that way. Also got the Gibson TRC on there and swapped the output jack and tone pot to their proper locations. As far as the tone - it's not really working for me. The Artec pup has an EMG kind of sound. I'll be putting a TB+ on there ASAP, probably eventually followed by a second. But that's all good. This thing can't be beat for the money. It's too bad they're not more readily available. I would definitely recommend one to someone looking for an affordable but decent instrument. And it's a great foundation for custom projects. Thanks to everyone involved! Oh and I love the fact that it's called a TH-1.  :P

Heart ROOLS! I love Nancy more than Ann.
They've had some great drummers--Michael Derosier in the 70s,
Denny Carmassi in the 80s

Yes! I was trying to remember Derosier's name. Wasn't Carmassi in Montrose?

Off topic and JMHO but I thought the only stand out in Heart was Ann Wilson, the rest of them were kind of pretty light weights.

I thought the original Heart was a pretty killer band.

It's here! A note from the mailman saying "sorry we missed you".  :-[

Oh well, tomorrow I guess. I don't think I'll be bold enough to use it at tomorrow's gig, but I think it will come out with me next Thursday.  ;D

Yeah, there's a great picture, but the model numbers in that whole book are quite skewed. I think they just list it as "8 string Rickenbacker" or something. Since they were one-offs (or two-offs?), I don't know if there was an official model number. 4001/8????  ???

You hardy impatient frontier folk!

 :D :D :D

My wire was sent May 5. My bank called to confirm it went through. I got an e-mail from Roman the next day asking if I was still interested. I told him I had just wired the money. I'm assuming there was some lag with the time zones, etc. Haven't heard anything since, but I'm assuming all is good. I'm an optimist! And my invoice did indicate the color - white. Now I have to go peel the plastic off a pair of TB pups...... Got chrome covers, rings, a Gibson TRC, some CTS pots, and a pickguard tracing from Rob. I guess I need to order some chrome cap knobs.  ;D

I e-mailed the seller asking if the yacht was included in the auction.  ;) OK, maybe I didn't....

The contours aren't working for me at all. Looks like a Yamaha.

That would be a 4008, with the headstock nicknamed Potato Head.

Not exactly.... That headstock was used on the few 8 string 4005 basses that were made in the 60s, as well as the two 8 string 4001 basses that were made around '72 - one for Entwistle, one for Squire. Also, the one above is more of a "tribute" to the potato head than an exact copy.

The 4008 came some time in the 80s and had a more standard 4001/4003 cresting wave headstock. The 4008 was eventually replaced by the 4003S/8. I am fortunate to own a beautiful example of one of these.

Bass Amps & Effects / Re: Earth amp

My first "real" bass amp was a tube Earth head and 18'' folded horn cabinet. Did the job, but there was NO high end coming out of that cab.
