The Outpost Cafe / Re: So, what have you been listening to lately?

Just when you thought we were out, they drag us back in,  :vader:

After Greta Van Fleet, I really wasn't expecting another LZ rip-off band.  I know the world is a pretty big place, but I still wonder how much more of this kind of stuff it can contain.  LZ had their say, although I much preferred the Yardbirds.  But maybe it's time to move on.

She (Glenys Lynne) predates Karen Carpenter. She's Afrikaans and was singing before joining with the band, who are of English origin. She later married the bassist.  :)  They still do a few shows a year.

It was a very strange song to be such a big international hit.

I noticed they briefly got mentioned in "This is Spinal Tap"

Sigh, Alanis Morissette has wreaked havoc with a whole generation of female singers.

But I actually like her version, overwrought vocals or not.

I get the impression she is totally a free spirit. She refuses record contracts and still sometimes busks in Berlin whenever she feels like it, despite now playing to audiences all over the world.  But even Kierkegaard would have been better off with an editor.  And even Hendrix listened to Chas Chandler's advice on how to streamline "Little Wing" down to its pure essence.  Sometimes vocal coaches, managers and producers can be helpful even to those who are really talented.

I like the Quatermass one even better.

The Quartermass version is definitely good and a lot of people seem to like it.  But the Rainbow version evokes a certain mood which appeals to me a little more.

That Rainbow version is really a nice one.

That Fat Mattress (which like Jethro Tull also had flutes and foppish band members) never received recognition for their contribution to heavy metal continues to be baffling.  BTW, Hendrix called them "Thin Pillow."

Nothing says Heavy Metal like Delaney & Bonnie.

About as heavy metal as Jethro Tull beating Metallica for a Grammy in 1989.   ;D

Kim Shattuck's courage was something to be greatly admired.  Amazing how she was able to complete that album and also keep her illness from people.  It looks like she did everything the right way and way better than most could have done.

My favorite song ever to play in a local cover band from years ago.

Not for the music per sé
😉

A disclaimer that I should have probably also put on the video I posted.  It's necessary to really stretch the boundaries in looking for EB-0/EB-3 & SG variant basses.

What a weird mashup of styles. 21st century diva pop meets modern hard rock. Two styles I can't stand.  :puke:

I'm not too familiar with it.  I keep getting video suggestions like that on You Tube.  It's mostly Scandinavian bands, but a few from Western Europe, too.  It isn't something which interests me, either. I do, however, sometimes like to listen to a female-fronted band such as Garbage, but they don't come out with new music often enough.

Bob Babbitt also played on some of the controversial Jimi Hendrix albums that Alan Douglas produced in the 1980s.  Douglas had studio musicians overdub much of the music.  Babbitt is on part of the Crash Landing album and on all of the Midnight Lightning album.  Albums like these were popular especially with people who weren't even very familiar with Hendrix in the first place, but the majority of the fans were critical of Hendrix's original music being tampered with.  I don't really have an opinion because those albums are hard to find and I've never even listened to them.  I'm a Hendrix completist but these are fairly rare recordings that even I don't have.  I've just shelled out $60 for the BOG Fillmore East CD set coming out next month, though, which is standard procedure for me.  I buy anything like that that's available.

A suggested You Tube video which came across my path.  I probably wouldn't have paid much attention if it hadn't been for the lead singer and the unexpected Gibson.
