Gibson Basses / Re: Early EB 3 or EB2D BRIDGE pup route HELP!

I thought that might be the case, as you listed models with a bridge pickup. I looked through my pics and don't have one for you.

Here's a shot of a 65/66 that I have on my bench. The neck has been removed to install on my 67 Rivoli.

Another vote for Original Titebond.  The only thing I'd even consider using liquid hid glue for is gluing the nut in place.

I'm glad to hear that you had it done with hide glue. That picture of the heel is exactly why I wouldn't do a neck reset on any guitars other than my own. It's a tricky job and there's always a bit of touchup to be done no matter how careful you are.

And the neck moves around a bit. I'd have to adjust it about every two or three months.

I think I sold it for $450. The pickguard is a quick one that I made when I pulled out the nickel pickup so it's not my best work. Pots were upgraded to CTS.

An engineer in one of the top studios in town told me that it was the best sounding bass he'd ever heard. It's probably my poor technique, but around the third set my hand would cramp so bad I had to switch instruments. The only skinny neck I still own is my Triumph. Skinny necks on shorties don't seem to bother me as much.

That is my old bass. I loved they way it sounded (especially when I had the nickle pickup installed) but couldn't get used to that skinny neck.

It pretty much sounds like a Thunderbird to me. I'm going to play around with it but I'll most likely put the original back in. No mods done at this point except a few extra screw holes in the pickup cavity.

Did your Guild arrive yet? These look great in white!

Here's what I did with my 301 the other day:

Thunderbucker 66S. I'm waiting on pickguard material so I can put the original aside. Should I keep the ring or lose it?

Guitars Etc. / Re: Playing bass through a guitar amp?

One of my favorite speaker cabs was a Scorpion equipped Peavey 412F with ports on the top and bottom. I foolishly though that I had to have an 8x10 to go with the SVT Classic head. I regretted selling it immediately.

As far as guitar amps for bass, I'm currently using a Fender Super Twin. I know that they were never a very good guitar amp, but 180w RMS is perfect for bass. It doesn't sound very Fender-y to me, thankfully. I've never been a big fan of the Fender tone stack for bass. It sounds more like a Sunn to my ears.

The Bass Zone / Re: Opinions on scale length for 8 string bass?

Thanks for the insight, fellas! I'm leaning towards a 32" scale, as I think I can make one of the the NOS gibby necks work without too much trouble. I'll post pics when I get started.

The Bass Zone / Opinions on scale length for 8 string bass?
« on: January 06, 2014, 02:44:37 PM »
I've been assembling parts for an 8 string LP Triumph style bass and am not sure what scale length I want to go with.  I believe that some of the Hamers are 30" and 32". Anyone here have any insight into 8 string shorties?

The alder bodies are much lighter than the maple. One of my alder Rippers is just a little above 8 lbs and the dive is pretty bad, even using a Fretsling strap.
