The Bass Zone / Long, Long Way from Home
« on: September 07, 2012, 10:05:47 AM »
All,
Can anyone tell me what is accompanying the bassline on this old Foreigner song?

It sounds sort of Moog-ish, but I'm sure that someone here will know some details. It's a great sound (from a band that I really don't care for very much).

Thanks,

The Outpost Cafe / Cool night at a local bar
« on: July 12, 2012, 08:34:36 AM »
My kids got called up yesterday afternoon to fill in for a band at a local bar (Volume-11) in Raleigh.
Mostly hardcore bands at this place and I was slightly concerned for my 13-year old son, who's the drummer.
I was bummed because I had already committed to subbing for a buddy's hockey team that night and would probably miss the show.
After my game, I rushed over to V-11 and got there as they kicked off their 1st song of the night.
The crowd was great and the owners of the joint are really great folks.

My oldest boy brought my "new" Peavey RJ-IV and it was good to hear it played loud and live on a few songs.
A cool moment was when he taped a lyric sheet to the mic and apologized up front to anyone fluent in German.
They lit into "Links" by Rammstein, which he sang in German (which is amazing as he doesn't speak the language).
A cool night for a proud mom & dad.

The Outpost Cafe / Rival Sons - diggin' it
« on: July 07, 2012, 06:14:57 AM »
My son got a chance to see Rival Sons open a show down in Atlanta and came back convinced that I'd love their stuff.
Hard to describe, but it's pretty straight up Blues Rock with an amazing groove.
They don't bury the bass, either - it's pretty prominent in the mix and really, really well done.

They have an album out - "Pressure & Time", here's a clip:

Enjoy....or not.

If anyone on LBO is looking for a vintage Sunn head, there's one for sale in Chapel Hill, NC

68' Sunn 200s Bass Amp Head

I don't know a thing about them, but I seem to recall some interest on LBO.

Hey all you home audio guys & gals,

I have an older (late 80's) Pioneer SA-1480 amp that I bought in Australia and I'm trying to match up to speakers.  I had some Advent Prodigy towers (75W RMS/300W peak handling) connected to them for a few years, but they blew out a few years back.

Here are the power specs on the Pioneer:
Music Power
  1 kHz, T.H.D. 10%, 8 Ohms................350W + 350W
Peak Music Power
  L + R channels.................................1400W

Continuous avg power output is 130W per channel, min, @ 8 Ohms

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
The amp has "A" and "B" speaker system outputs - basically designed to handle 4 speakers

Am I in the ballpark trying to find 8-Ohm speakers that can handle 350W each?
Anyone care to suggest a good matchup?  I see tons of home audio speakers in Pawn shops and music store all the time, but not too sure about the best way to match up to my old reliable amp.

Thanks,

The Outpost Cafe / Hey Denis - I thought you might like these

While I was in Grand Rapids, MI last week at Skytron, they had a few motorcycles throughout the office.  They had a 197? Kawasaki 900 that had <8 miles on it, as well as a few interesting pieces.
1. 1914 Ariel - sold for $350 new (in England)...have a look at the leather chain on that thing. It's monsterous.

2. 1913 Harley-Davidson 9-E (F-head) V-Twin - also sold for $350 new

..and a shameless plug for my new ride (delivered last night). Unfortunately, it was not $350 new:

Other Bass Brands / Kay K5970 (original)
« on: February 01, 2012, 12:47:36 PM »
A guy on my hockey team asked me if I'd be interested in trying to fix "an old bass" he picked up.
I haven't seen it or know exactly whats wrong with it, but it's an old Kay K5970. He thinks it's an electronics issue.
I know...could be anything - won't know until I get my hands on it.

He thinks it's from the 50's or 60's.

I figured that if any group of bass scientists would know anything about this model bass, they'd be hanging out at LBO.
Any words of wisdom?

I know nothing about these basses...not sure if anyone here is interested in these or not:

Bass Amps & Effects / Mesa Boogie M-Pulse 600 - at Pawn shop
« on: December 30, 2011, 03:25:58 PM »
Probably my last post for a while, but if there's anyone in the Raleigh area looking for a Mesa Bass amp, there's a Pawn Shop that's selling a Mesa Boogie M-Pulse 600 (stickered at $449).  Just in passing, I asked one of the salesmen if it was 100% functional, and he said yes.  There are a few smaller cabs to test out with, if you're interested (there was an SWR Goliath 210 there).  They're not shy about haggling, so maybe you can get them well south of $400.

Anyway, I know these are expensive units (even used, I see them for $750-1000) and it might be a great deal for someone.

Other Bass Brands / Does this bridge look right?
« on: December 28, 2011, 10:00:08 AM »
I'm interested in this Peavey Dyna Unity on eBay.
Is it me (or the camera angles), but does the bridge plate look like it's mounted a bit scewed?
I noticed that the g-string roller is adjusted all the way towards the centerline of the bass, while the E-string roller is max adjusted away from the centerline.
That has me a little curious.

If anyone takes a look and thinks it's just me or the camera angles, please let me know.
As always, thanks.

This guy's eBay ad makes a commitment that I don't think he'll back up.

"WHAT YOU SEE PICTURED IS WHAT YOU WILL RECEIVE"

that's a lot of stuff for $39.95 shipping
