The Bass Zone / JPJ Out of ZEP?
« on: July 24, 2008, 04:53:42 AM »
I'm reading a 2005 book about Zeppelin by Keith Shadwick. Sometimes I wanna punch the author in the face! He ain't much of a fan of the band he's making money off of.
He evidently never met the band members.
Gotta give him credit for meticulous research tho, digging thru old Mojo & Melody Maker mags & so on....
Anyway....He came up with some interesting info which may or may not be true.
He said JPJ wanted to leave the band in the mid 70s!
MIGHTY glad he decided to carry on....he's one of my fav musicians!
Glad the REUNION happened too & hope to see 'em again.
They were AWESOME when they played 3 hour shows!!!
Saw 'em do that TWICE in 1970!!
In '71 I saw 'em play for 3 & a half hours!!!! Best Shows Ever!
The Page & Plant shows of the mid 90s were great even tho there was a different Jones on bass--
Charlie did a great job & I love that dvd.
A Zep Reunion Tour still ain't happening....but if it does JPJ better be part of it!!!!!

ZoSo appears on 2 tracks & Jon Anderson of YES is also on 2 tracks, & Jonesy sings a bit himself!

Here's a HEAVY Instrumental cut off it:

The Bass Zone / Low Volume Songcrafting
« on: June 24, 2008, 09:41:28 PM »
No matter how much advice I got to turn down at rehearsals, I always MAXED OUT the VOLUME when JAMMING with my buds & SOUNDPROOFED THE HELL OUTA MY STUDIO to do it.

We're in the recording process now tho & had a great breakthrough tonight.
The guitard in my trio pushes us to DEAFENING SOUND LEVELS & wants to run my P.A. Mono instead of Stereo so IT'LL BE TWICE AS LOUD!!
I told him NO, my ears have been ringing enuf as it is. >sheesh<
Well he was too tired to play tonight, so Joe & I left the windows & shutters open & played low volume---strongly but gently!!
We laid down 4 BASIC TRACKS & got a PERFECT MIX with the playback sounding Just Right with the vocals unstrained & LOUD an' CLEAR & predominant, instead of screaming at the top of our lungs & still being drowned out.

Joe & I are becoming a really SOLID RHYTHM SECTION!!

I recommend working with your drummer alone from time to time, low volume, without the static of a damned guitard. ....especially when you're laying down Basic Tracks for recordings!!!
QUANTUM LEAPS!!!!

We could BREATHE & understand my lyrics!!! ...& no neighbors complained & no cops showed up!!

Even the established veteran Rockers are gonna have trouble sellin' tickets this summer.

The Bass Zone / Paid Your Dues?
« on: June 23, 2008, 02:44:41 PM »
Anyone here pay dues to the musicians union?
I'm thinking about joining. What are the benefits?
I know diddly about it.
I'm gettin' ready to join SAG~ the Screen Actor's Guild too.
From what I understand, extras get paid twice as much with a SAG card.
You have a better chance of getting some speaking lines or a role in a film as a union member.
So I wonder if there's some similar benefits for musicians who literally pay their dues.

The Outpost Cafe / Cool Myspace Bands!!
« on: June 16, 2008, 03:31:28 AM »
Tonight I just flashed on 2 instrumentals that I use for my pro song from time to time, El Zaffa by Ancient Future & El Sexxo by Banyan!!
At the mo I've got El Zaffa as my pro song.

www.myspace.com/terrodactyl Send me a friend request if ya haven't already!
Band pages comin' sooon!!

Besides both songs oozing sex vibes & beginning with El (The), both bands have something Very Coool in common & that is that they're both collectives-- there are many interchangeable band members who take turns performing together.

Check out their myspace pages & listen to the songs!!

www.myspace.com/ancientfuture

www.myspace.com/banyanband

You'll see that BANYAN is Stephen Perkins (Drummer for Jane's Addiction) band & Tony Franklin the Fretless Wonder is one of the bassplayers.
I met Tony in the Whole Foods in my hometown when I moved back to Glendale in 2006 & we became friends. He put me on the Guest List for a Banyan show. I had gone to see Anoushka My Baboushka at UCSD from 8pm to 10pm & then hurried over to the lil club Banyan was at in San Diego for their show.
Got there just as they started El Sexxo!
That was magic!
A Very Special Night!!

Well Banyan is gonna be playin' in L.A. on July 6th...just asked Tonester if he'll be joining them....
Also asked him if there are FIRM plans yet for the BLUE MURDER Reunion!
Also asked him if he played with Rory Gallagher in the early 80s, a friend of mine saw Rory then & swears it was Tony on bass.
Also asked him if he'd like to stop by for tea & contribute to the recording sessions going on in my Home Studio!
Hey~ No harm in asking, right? He just might say YES!

Check Banyan's Tour Dates...& go see 'em if ya get a chance! FUN band, serious musicianship!!!

Be sure to read Ancient Future's Bio...it's very interesting.
El Zaffa means The Egyptian Wedding Rhythm. ;)

Friends have been recommending Candy Dulfer to me for years, so I finally just got her '93 cd Sax a Go Go. Fun stuff!
Makes you feel like you're dressed in Armani & out on the town.
Anyone else into her? Born in Amsterdam, she's had her own band since she was 14!
Ain't she a beauty?

Girl can BLOW! heh Had to say it. lol

The Outpost Cafe / Tam Lin
« on: May 31, 2008, 09:37:04 PM »
Before there was Loreena McKennitt or Blackmore's Night or even Clannad & Enya there was Fairport Convention, with the lovely & talented Sandy Denny. Many of you will recall that she sang with Robert Plant on The Battle of Evermore.
This song Tam Lin is the best! I discovered it in 1999, but it was recorded in 1969. I first heard it thru headphones at the BORDERS in Hilo, on the Big Island of Hawaii. I bought the cd straightaway!
Here it is performed LIVE~ Scroll down to RARE AUDIO Part 4
http://youtube.com/results?search_query=Tam+Lin&search_type=
The studio version is tighter & even better. The recording quality is much better too. If you like this you should get the '69 album Liege And Lief too.
Wikipedia tells all aboout this album:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liege_&_Lief
& this song:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tam_Lin

Glad to finally be able to share this with you all. One of my FAV songs!!!
Lots of other great songs on Liege And Lief.

Who Do You Most Wanna See On The Cover of a Bass Mag?

Some of you will probly say ME....meaning you.

I wanna say Me, of course, but I don't deserve it yet.
So my vote is for Phil Kennemore of Y&T.
This is long, long overdue for Phil. He ROCKS!!!!
