Jimmy Cliff~ Classic Reggae, etc.:

This gentleman is right up there with Marley....well, close!
He's still with us too....

Many Rivers To Cross:

http://jp.youtube.com/watch?v=XcZaV_2qnDA&feature=related

A friend in Sac asked me what I was up to a few years back & I said I was in Limbo--just waiting to move back to the Southland--& asked him & some others if they knew that great JC song--Sitting Here In Limbo. They didn't.
On the way home back to fokkin' Kelseyville I stopped for gas & as I paid at the counter there was a Jimmy Cliff cd on a rack with that song on it--& Bongo Man, Many Rivers To Cross, & other great songs. I think it was The Essential Jimmy Cliff. I bought it of course! Cosmic
Not sure what happened to it...I may have sold it to Amoeba when I was in between money. :o
Wikipedia says he's made 25 albums but I don't see the one I had--His Greatest Hits:

Sitting Here In Limbo:

Thot I was HOME living back in the house I grew up in, in the town I was born in....
....but now I'm movin' on again....lookin' for a new home....
...& realizing that our Real Home is back in the spiritual realm with the Lord.
...& we don't have to die to be with Him!

Jimmy Cliff's songs are very spiritual....but one seems kind of materialistic.

You Can Get It If You Really Want It! :D

One more that'll make ya feel happy for sure:

According to a tv special on Archibald Leach aka Cary Grant, he took LSD 100 times when it was legal & spoke of stripping away the bs:

I'm guessing he continued to take it after it was made illegal but wouldn't admit it.
I'm guessin' too that not all his trips were clinical.

The Bass Zone / Jack Bruce Blasts Zep!

Cream was my first concert. I was 15 in 1968 & they played a SENSATIONAL show at the L.A. Forum. I went with 2 buds & our girlfriends, 6 of us crammed in the back of an older guy's van. We all took mescaline for the first time & therefore the psychelic songs & music were 10 times more intense than usual!!!!!!!!!! I thot Ginger Baker & his Double Bass Drumkit was the most amazing phenomenon on this planet!! I continued to think that until I saw Zep 2 times 2 years later &  BONZO was even more amazing than Ginger! ...even with only a single bass kit! Zep played for 3 hours both times & CREAM had only played for 2!!! Deep Purple opened for Cream.
Then I saw Zep again in '71 & they played for 3 & a half hours & BONZO played a 45 minute MOBY DICK~ over twice as long as Ginger's drum solo & THUNDEROUSLY more POWERFUL! ...even tho again he played a single kick set.

Unfortunately CREAM was on their Farewell Tour in '68....so they were only together 2 years!!
ZEP went for what--12 years--& toured their asses off, playing mostly 3 hour shows with No Opener!!!

I wish Y&T would do that!!! WS too!!! 3 & a half would be even better!!

Right now I'm listening to The London Philharmonic performing instrumental versions of Zep songs. This is FANTASTIC music & not too many bands are worthy of such an honor, having a full orchestra pay tribute like this.
Highly recommended.

I love Jack & I'm mighty glad I got to meet him. Caught him in the bar at Konocti before he went on with Ringo Starr & The All Star Band in '99. Shook hands & called him Mr. Bruce. Told him that CREAM was my first concert in '68 & he asked "Where?"
When I answered "L.A." he said "That was a good show!"
Funny that I started playin' bass 4 years later....at age 50....& the first riff I played was....
Sunshine of Your Love

My fav CREAM songs today are Sitting On Top of the World & Spoonful.
CREAM gave credit to Chester Burnett aka Howlin' Wolf for Sitting On Top of the World & Willie Dixon for Spoonful, unlike Zep who didn't give credit where credit was due for so many of their songs. In all fairness to Zep tho, you gotta understand that most of those ol' Blues songs went thru many lyric changes & musical changes as they developed from one band to another over decades....like this song:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sitting_on_Top_of_the_World

Interesting, huh?

Here it is LIVE for ya along with Steppin' Out whuch is a Bluesbreakers toon Eric did with John Mayall:

Young Clapton being AGGRESSIVE!!
Mighty glad I saw him back then! CREAM was fokking BRILLIANT!!! ZEP too!!!!
Personally I prefer Page's work over the years to Clapton's, Zep concerts over Cream, & Zep put out 4 times the number of albums that Cream did.
Hmmmm....I've often said that JPJ is my fav bassplayer, but Jack Bruce is right up there with him!! Jack can IMPROVISE all over the neck like a Mad Monster!!!!
I prefer Jack's singing to Plant's too most of the time.

You gotta hand it to CREAM for being a TRIO & kicking ASS & ya really gotta hand it to JACK for performing the duties of both JPJ & Plant--playing bass AND singing!!

Nothing really tops SPOONFUL~ the song that made everyone rush the stage:

This version cuts off the ending tho. Here's the Wheels of Fire version:

Part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5791GE2zHc&feature=related

The Ultimate Jam Song!

Ginger Baker inspired me to become a Double Bass Drummer!!
I didn't get my first kit til '78 tho...after seeing Aynsley Dunbar playin' hell outa his Double Bass Kit!!
Jack Bruce inspires me to play bass & sing now!!

I hope CREAM & ZEP will both carry on with more reunion shows in 2009!!

The Bass Zone / Flashbacks~Carnival of Life & other Psychedelia
« on: November 05, 2008, 12:27:37 AM »
Ah~ I still LOVE 60s Psychedelia!

Lee Michaels was great & recorded several albums just as a duo--him on Hammond organ & Frosty on drums:

Carnival of Life has a cat named John Keski on bass, Hamilton W. Watt on guitar, Eddie Hoh on drums & strangely enuf--anuzza organ player--Gary Davis (no, not the Rev.-he was an axmon.
So this album ROCKS a lot harder than most of the other stuff Lee did.
HELLO opens the album:

___________________________________________

I love Steve Winwood's B-3 playing on Voodoo Chile & other Classic Rock songs too...Traffic was my fav band to see in the early 70s & I saw 'em A LOT!!!!!!!!!
Again, Traffic was at their best when they had a bassplayer too...& a full band.
Ric Grech played well on Low Spark & David Hood (who's played on twice as many albums-1,000 or so!-- as Tony Levin--500 or so) did well onstage & on Shoot Out At The Fantasy Factory.
Dave Mason played bass on Traffic's 60s albums...& got good on guitar later.
I loved his album Alone Together & saw him lotsa times at The Troubadour.
WELCOME TO THE CANTEEN was anuzza great TRAFFIC album featuring Grech on bass & Mason on guitar.
I saw 'em on the WELCOME TO THE CANTEEN TOUR, it was great!

The Outpost Cafe / What Are Ya Reading?
« on: October 17, 2008, 03:59:13 AM »
I just finished another WONDERFUL book by Morgan Llywelyn. Her book The Lion of Ireland is my fav book next to the profound cream of Vedic literature--the books translated from Sanskrit into English by A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami, my dear grandfather guru. I've read The Lion of Ireland 4 times!!!! ..& it's sequel--A Pride of Lions-- twice!! I've also read several of Morgan Llywelyn's other books---The Red Branch, Finn MacCool...& now The Greener Shore. It's a sequel to her book Druids but I skipped that one....perhaps cuz it is so thick or perhaps I shied away due to my knowledge that druids performed human sacrifices.
Anyway...All these books are about Ireland in the distant past but Morgan leads you thru the mists of time & makes you feel like you're experiencing the events that form the history of the enchanting Emerald Isle.

I recommend starting with The Lion of Ireland as I did back in 1981. It's the story of one of the first Kennedys....spelled Cennedi by the Celts. It's Historical Fiction which means it's based on History but made 100 times more exciting by the author, using her vivid imagination & expert storytelling skills.

Then read The Greener Shores. It's the story of a druid who becomes the patriarch of his tribe when the chieftain is slain in battle somewhere in the middle of Europe by the Romans & they find a new start by escaping to Ireland.
Don't worry--there's only a reference to one human sacrifice in it.  The druids in the story had stopped human sacrifices.
The druids actually had much wisdom & so does the author.
Some reviewers call this her masterpiece...but whoever said that must not have fully appreciated The Lion of Ireland.
They're both bloody brilliant!!

I cried tonight as I finished the book, cuz it's so beautifully written & cuz IT WAS OVER!

I'll be reading Morgan Llywelyn's book GRANIA next.

The Outpost Cafe / Highlight of the Pirate Faire

This year the musicians & wenches--especially the bellydancers-- were great as in previous years, but the highlight for me this year was meeting a gentleman who was friends with George Harrison & made some custom jewlry for him. He was wearing a ring that he'd made for George for his wedding ring, which had been upgraded to a ring with a different stone which was according to astrological calculation better for his aura & so forth.  :P
He made several pieces for George & also Dylan & Joni Mitchell.
Anyway~His rings were goin' for 2 to 3 GRAND & his necklaces & so on were sky high but really exquisite. Here, have a look for yourself:

http://www.heyoka-art.com/

Be sure to click on his Favorite Pieces. They're no longer available but worth checking out.
I bought his book Sacred Art Sacred Earth for $20. There's a photo of him playin' guitars with George & Carl Perkins!!!

We talked a long time & he had some good stories & really loved George. He would fly to England & Maui, Hawaii to hang out with my fav Beatle.

The Outpost Cafe / Flesh On Flesh
« on: September 21, 2008, 06:23:17 AM »
The title of Al DiMeola's 2002 album Flesh On Flesh is catchy...but the title track is my least favorite toon on the cd.
My fav cut is the opening track- Zona Desperata--9 & a half minutes of sheer musical brilliance!

I've been listenin' to this cd a lot this Summer. I didn't get it when it was released, I just got it this year. I really LOVE Anthony Jackson's bass playing, & it's cool to hear him layin' down the groove on this album. He played on the '77 album Elegant Gypsy & the '91 album Kiss My Axe!!

Here is a scholarly review:

For over a quarter of a century, guitarist Al Di Meola has been a trailblazer. Flesh on Flesh, finds him pushing the musical envelope in both directions: exploring new avenues of cross-cultural expression while reaching into his own storied past to create a new and distinctly personal statement.

For Flesh on Flesh, Di Meola has gathered a diverse and highly talented supporting cast of world-class musicians, including bassist Anthony Jackson, pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba, flutist Alejandro Santos and World Sinfonia members Gumbi Ortiz on percussion and Mario Parmisano on keyboards. In addition to contributing five originals, Di Meola also updates compositions by pianist Chick Corea, Argentinian tango master Astor Piazzolla and Brazilian guitarist Egberto Gismonti.

“What I like most about this record is that we were able to capture a phenomenal sound playing live in the studio,” Di Meola says. “I think the energy and excitement is several notches up, and the fact that I’m playing electric (mixed with acoustic) is a real plus. That element, along with the driving rhythms and drums, is very exciting.”

Di Meola’s electric guitar playing is what first brought him an international following, dating back to 1974 when Corea tapped the young Berklee student as a charter member of the seminal fusion group Return to Forever. Flesh on Flesh includes Corea’s composition “Senor Mouse” with Di Meola on Fender Stratocaster, one of the few times he has played that particular instrument. Di Meola also plays drums, his first instrument, on the track. Besides his Strat, he employs an array of different guitars, including a 1958 Les Paul, a Conde acoustic guitar and a Godin electro-acoustic guitar, as well as Ovation guitars and the Roland VG-88 guitar system.

Guitar wizardry is just one part of the musical equation that makes Flesh on Flesh so compelling. Special guest pianist Rubalcaba appears on several tracks. “It’s always been a real dream of mine to record with him,” notes Di Meola. Another star is bassist Jackson, who played on Di Meola’s Elegant Gypsy album in the mid-80s. They hadn’t worked together in nearly 15 years.

Flesh on Flesh features compositions from two of his favorite composers: Piazzolla and Gismonti. Di Meola considers Piazzolla a hero and says of his music, “I just can’t stop—I’m addicted.” On “Fugata,” the late composer’s material is interpreted respectfully by Di Meola, but with an added twist. “What I like doing with his tunes is changing the syncopation of the rhythm. It winds up sounding like a cross between Buenos Aires and Havana.”

Di Meola’s treatment of Gismonti’s composition “Meninas” is also very special, but for more personal reasons. “I’d never recorded anything by him, but I’ve always been a big fan. Always.” He adds, “This particular tune has got to be my favorite piece of his. I’ve always melted when I heard it. The translation of the title is ‘little girls’ and I know he wrote it with his children in mind. I also have two little girls, and there are certain melodies in the tune that make me think of them every time I’m away. It’s a harmonically beautiful piece that contains some of my favorite melodies.”

For Flesh on Flesh, the guitarist recruited Grammy-winning recording engineer Roger Nichols (Steely Dan, Beach Boys) to add his expertise and help create a superior sound. “Roger is a legendary engineer, and we were very happy to have him on this project,” says Di Meola. “We had Roger record the basic tracks and that to me is the most important thing—laying the foundation.”

With his fourth Telarc release, Di Meola continues to break new ground in combining jazz with the diverse musics of the world. Flesh on Flesh is the latest step in that never-ending journey of self-discovery.

Actually the LATEST album now is Consequence of Chaos....which I got signed by Al when he did a Meet an' Greet after his 2006 House of Blues Sunset show. I can't find it anywhere! I seem to have misplaced it. Hope it wasn't nicked.
He was also sellin' a cd called DiMeola Plays Piazzola...which I didn't buy. I think it's all acoustic.

Here's a short Bio. I agree with the writer that Elegant Gypsy is Al's best album:
About Al Di Meola:

A native of New Jersey, Al Di Meola replaced Bill Conners in Chick Corea's "Return To Forever" at age 19. he left in 1976 after recording three albums with the group. During the four years following , his concert tours and solo LP's (including Land of the Midnight Sun, Elegant Gypsy, Casino, and Splendido Hotel) has brought him four straight wins as Best Jazz Guitarist in the Guitar Player Readers Poll, as well as three awards for the Best Guitar Albums.

His albums have explored a variety of styles, but his best liked albums are the latin influenced fusion albums which are his first through Tour De Force, plus the recent Kiss My Axe (you'll have to forgive the title). Cielo E Terra and Soaring Through a Dream explore world musics, while Scenario and Tirami Su have some of the edge removed. The fusion albums have a slight degree of sameness. He just doesn't seem to be able to channel that fiery style into any stylistic changes. But that doesn't mean he's not worth hearing! Get Elegant Gypsy (my favorite) or Casino. You won't be disappointed if you like guitar fusion or just good guitar ability Electric Rendezvous and Kiss My Axe are incredible albums from one of the best fusion guitarists alive.

Di Meola, Al [USA] [solo]

Land of the Midnight Sun (76), Elegant Gypsy (77), Casino (78), Splendido Hotel (80), Electric Rendezvous (82), Tour De Force - Live (82), Scenario (83), Cielo E Terra (85), Soaring Through a Dream (85), Tirami Su (87), World Sinfonia (90) Kiss My Axe (91), Orange and Blue (94), World Sinfonia II - Heart of the Immigrants (93) , Al Di Meola Play Piazzolla (96), The Infinite Desire (98) Winter Nights (99), Flesh on Flesh (2002), Consequence of Chaos (2006)
