I've been toying with a Fenderbird project or buying one of the EPI non-reverse P/J basses and routing it for a couple of humbuckers, so am wondering what pickups options are out there?  Off the top of my head I know there are Barts, Lull or maybe hunt for used TB-Plus pickups - anything else?

Not Dave's cup of tea, I know, but the Dark Stars do look good on an SG shaped bass ....

I'd been procrastinating about this one for a week or two, and had made a couple of unsuccessful offers, but today my latest offer was accepted ....

For someone who took 30 years to bond with short scales, I'm really liking my shortie Gibsons these days  :o

Gibson Basses / blue Thunderbirds not popular in Japan?

Orville bluebird only $450 plus shipping.  For some reason the rare blue one is cheaper than the 'burst ones.

Butch Ammons of Bayou Cables built this one and I bought it from Tom Appel from bassguitarstrings.us.  Arrived yesterday, and I took it to rehearsal last night with my power trio.  The Dark Star cuts through so nicely that I'll be playing it at our gig tonight.  It's a P bass on steroids.

The Bass Zone / Neck heavy?

I came across this on another forum.  Maybe we need a WTF section here.  Fancy adding 1.5lbs to your bass?

Guys,

There's an Australian custom bass builder (http://www.maillouxbasses.com) who has been making some beautiful basses, and Phil happens to be the admin for ozbassforum.com , the only dedicated bass forum for Australians.

I saw one of Phil's custom jazz basses recently, and the first thing I thought of was how nice a Fenderbird would look if Phil was interested in making one.  Then the thought of a forum limited edition hand made Fenderbird got into my head, especially since the proposed Gibson Custom Show non-reverse might be too expensive for many people.

Phil estimates he could build a limited run of non-reverse bodied Fenderbirds for around US$2000 plus shipping (US$150).  I suggested I'd start a thread here, and if there is interest, Phil will join the forum and participate in the discussion to flesh out details like colours, pickups (eg. Darkstar, anyone?), bridge etc.  This could be an opportunity for a top quality bass to fill the void between the quality of the Bach basses and the proposed Gibson limited run.

Here's one of Phil's Jazz basses.  The body and neck is made from scratch, not a parts bass .....

Do you guys think that a forum-only Fenderbird limited edition around this pricepoint has potential?

Bass Amps & Effects / Pimped my rig

For my Stones tribute band the chrome grilles on the SWR cabs are a bit too bling, so I bought some Ampeg cloth and made up removable panels using some 3mm hardwood panels, attached with tiny pieces of velcro.  Sorry for the poor quality mobile phone photos, but I hope you get the idea.

The Outpost Cafe / Rock music history in my backyard
« on: May 17, 2010, 09:21:53 PM »
On Sunday my Stones tribute band is hosting a charity event in conjunction with the release of the remastered Exile On Main Street to raise funds for the Fred Hollows Foundation.  There are a number of cool aspects of this gig -

1. We're playing the 1972 US tour set list in full
2. Universal Music have donated 4 copies of the Exile CD as raffle prizes
3. Ampeg is providing the backline - three SVT-VR heads and SVT-VR 810 cabs

and the big one .....

4. Sam Cutler will be present, to talk about his book "You Can't Always Get What You Want" and take questions from the audience in between the support bands, plus donate 2 signed copies of the book as raffle prizes.  Sam lives in Australia these days, and was tour manager for the Stones and the Grateful Dead.  He was the main organiser for the free concert in Hyde Park just after Brian Jones died (Mick Taylor's first gig), was one of the organisers for the Altamont concert, and arranged the involvement of the Grateful Dead on the Festival Express tour (among other things).

I just hope he has enough brain cells left to be able to share his memories of those times with us!

Bass Amps & Effects / Incoming! Ampeg V4BH
« on: May 06, 2010, 10:22:28 PM »
In our Stones tribute we've been working on getting our backline to look and sound somewhat authentic, to add a little to the visual element of our shows. My chrome grill SWR cabs have far too much bling for our image  so I've bought some seventies silver/blue Ampeg grill cloth and am making some faux panels to pop on the front of the cabs to look more "vintage". And, I found a 100w all tube V4BH head at the right price locally, so I'll also be swapping out the black cloth on that as well for the silver/blue.

The V4BH only weighs 40lbs, so I don't have to go all caveman with an SVT and a fridge to get the look and sound that will go nicely with this band. I'm keen to see what a stack of 2 or 3 of my Goliath Jr cabs will look like with Ampeg cloth  :o

That said, we're doing a show in 2 weeks time with the support of Universal Music to coincide with the release of the remastered Exile On Main Street, and the local Ampeg distributor is donating a backline of 3 x SVT VR heads and fridges for the show, so that might be fun too  ;)

Gibson Basses / We all need a backup, right?

At least that's my excuse

Just scored a minty SG Standard for AUD$1000 (US$900), to go with the SG Faded I bought last year.

Here's some photos from my Rolling Stoned gig last Friday night.  The two of us with corporate day jobs wear wigs for this band LOL

Apologies for picture quality, was a friend who was too scared to come any closer, so she used zoom.
