Title: show your multiple bass pictures!
Post by: hieronymous on August 02, 2008, 07:03:40 PM
The short scale basses thread (http://bassoutpost.com/index.php?topic=948.0) is going really nicely - there's a lot of 'em around here!

I've been thinking about taking pictures of multiple basses for a while, and I finally went into the back yard, dragged out a bunch of stands, and took a bunch of pictures! Some of them are kind of standard, like pictures of my Alembics together or pictures of my Gibsons - if you've got any, post them! Here's one of my Alembic shots:

But I took a thematic one too - I give you:
"short scale basses with low impedance pickups"

Maybe you already have some group shots, or maybe this thread will inspire you to drag your gear out onto the back porch, or even your floor, and take some new ones!

The theme here is blue with black hardware. I took this picture for the Warwick forum.  There they mistakenly thought the Wick wears the pants..... (With 5 Ricks in the house.)

Great pics guys! Keep 'em coming!

Blue with black hardware is an awesome theme! One pic that I am kicking myself for forgetting to take yesterday was "brown basses of the '70s" - the doubleneck and Triumph show above together with my '76 Autumnglo 4001. Oh well, maybe next time...

I like your black & blue Ric, Bert; that's a great color combination.   is that factory or did you customize it?

The Warwick is customized with original Warwick hardware (it used to have gold hardware). The Rick is factory MIDnight Blue with BlackTrim.

Wow,  :o  love that pointy Alembic, pure sweetness there! Love that blue Ricky too, I've never even seen that color on one before, very nice.
Here of course is my modest group........Except for a recently hatched Fenderbird that has so far, escaped the camera  ;)

Here's a Gibson family shot without the NR added yet.  Sadly, the SG is gone to fund another vintage bass.

Is the Gretsch Thunderjet chambered? I thought it was a solidbody.

Chambered.  It has a nice hollow thump when you tap on it.  I can wear it for hours.  Nothing like the "chambered" 11.5 lbs. LP basses that were recently discontinued.

Honestly, I play it about half the time now along with my TBs at gigs.  It's just too easy to play.  It reminds me of an Allen Woody in size and weight, but the sound and build is incredible.

There's something about a compact short scale bass that sets it apart. And I've always loved the DuoJet shape.

Yep, once I got the TJ, the SG just sat in the case for months before I sold it.  This bass is a perfect mix of style and tone IMHO.

Gretsch Duo Jet guitars are chambered too. Since the first time they built 'm.

I realize that. But when the Thunder Jet came out, I thought the news releases called it a solid body. Looking at the Gretsch website now, I see it's categorized under the solid body section but the specs clearly say it's a semi-hollw mahogany body.
Title: Re: show your multiple bass pictures!
Post by: Chris P. on August 08, 2008, 12:21:26 PM
That's always an issue in Gretsch books. Gretsch always called it their first solidbody and it had to be a substitute for Fender basses and Gibson EB basses. But it really is 'semisolid.'

But:
There are a lot of Les Pauls with chambered bodies too. The girl-versions, some Epiphones and modern LPs, the Peter Frampton sig and I believe the new Slash sig has it too. Gibson state that they can't find wood as light as they had in the sixties. Making a guitar more hollow to the weight of a solid lightweight guitar, gives a same sound. Peter Frampton stated in an interview some years ago that his first prototype was heavier and different sounding than his own guitar. They made the chambers so it weighs exact the same as the real old Frampton guitar and the sound was spot on! of course this could be a nice selling story only.

But to come to the point: Chambered Les Pauls are never called semisolid either.

I've never held or seen an M 85 in person, but the M 75 that I'm converting to a bass is very similar: maple carved top, lots of chambers,  mahogany body. Body shape is very similar. I'd say they are very much alike. More so than those recent LP basses with the really heavy bodies and 34" scale necks
.

Like I said, it's become a favorite and has a permanent home!

In the 3 shots you have my LP Standard (which I've never shown on here), my beater Yamaha, and my beloved Stealth Thunderbird. Also my Daughters Epi Dot Studio, and the black bass is a "prototype" that I'm working on for myself. The neck is worthless (warped beyond repair and the frets were brutally removed by me), the whole thing is basically a mock up. Anyhow, that is my "collection".

Tom, the default size limit setting for externally hosted pics is 800 x 600, I figured that was reasonable and would keep most users from having to scroll right to see a whole photo. The question hasn't come up before so I don't know if larger images are automatically downsized or not.

It's a heavily modified 1989 4003S. I bought it on eBay in 2000 for $650, plus $25 to ship.  ;D It was stock when I bought it, and now it is the perfect bass for me. Starting at the headstock:

4004L truss rod cover
Hipshot D-tuner
Schaller/Rickenbacker straplocks
WD mirrored pickguard
'92 toaster pickup (pre-scatterwound = HOT!)
'06 treble pickup with adjustable pole pieces
vintage style knobs
Hipshot brass boat anchor bridge

I think that's it!

I can't believe I started this thread over 3 years ago! Today was a nice sunny winter day in the San Francisco Bay Area, not too cold, so I decided to take pictures of some basses - pictures I've been meaning to take but too lazy to make happen!

This is a shot that I've been wanting to take for a long time - I call it "brown 1970s basses":

It's not complete - still need to get my Alembic doubleneck in there, but I also wanted a pic of just these two. The Triumph is early-'70s, the Ric is 1976.

Feel free to help me revive this thread by posting more pics!

Most of that last pic are gone, sold off to buy others that I don't have group shots of, but it's one of the few times I had them all together.  Still have the Mouradian and the Kent (sentimental - 1st electric, gift from neighbor who is no longer with us).  The current collection is still too big to fit in one pic and still have them be big enough to identify.  The 3 in the top pic and the Bich are still with me, though the Bich is now BEAD - low 4 of a baritone guitar, with octave up strings.

When I look at pics of the Ric and Vox I miss them, but realistically the Vox didn't sound very good and the Ric wasn't touched after I got the Mouradian.

Tragically, the posters in the old jam room did not survive.

82 Roland G505, 76 Thunderbird, MIJ Pbass, 73 Ric, BaCHbird, 78 Ric, 81 Roland G808

I have some other stragglers- old fretless Stingray, Christopher 3/4 upright, etc.  I don't play fretless or upright much anymore (used to be the opposite), but I've hung onto those in case I ever circle back that way.  I've also sold a handful of basses over the past couple years... ones that seemed redundant [gives MG Ric the evil eye...] or that I just wasn't playing regularly.

The ones that stand out to me are the Exploiter (I had one with a natural finish - my first Alembic!), the BC Rich 8-string, and the Mouradian. Jim Mouradian was local to me when I lived in Boston - I would take my basses to him for setups over the years, and I remember he had a cool blueprint of that Mouradian body shape framed up on the wall.

I'll try something a bit different.....my acoustic basses.

Lakeland made original Warwick Alien that was the first ever in the U.S. back around 1992 and meant for TM Stevens after I wrote the magazine review on it. But I liked it so much that I kept it and bought it...so they had to get another for TM :)

So it's time for my annual revival of this thread! Had another nice winter day so I cleaned off the carport roof and dragged a couple of basses out for a photo session - this time, my Fender Japan Precisions:

Now I feel like I've got a nice range of Fender sounds on hand - the Classic '70s with rounds and Alembic pups and the Dunn with flats. The neck on the Dunn feels a lot chunkier but I measured them with my calipers and they are exactly the same width and depth! Must be a radius thing...

Wow, a quad bass! Cool stuff. What did they actually call those little LP Jr. style basses? I mean the regular 4 string ones.

Yeah...Here is the details for any Hamer fans:

They made less than 10 of those 12-knob Quads and mine is one of, I believe, the only two remaining with the original wiring still intact...and maybe the only one that also has the required Quad breakout box interface. I think they only did two in Sunburst. Got it from the original owner who produced Eric Johnson's early stuff and owns the largest recording studio down in TX.

Those 4 string LP Jr-bodied Hamers are B4S models -- hard to find the 4-string ones. That one and the 8-string B8S version are both in the SN#100-200 range...same with the Quadbass. The Standard (Explorer) is in the SN#050 range and is the one I got from Herman Brood's bassist, Freddie Cavalli, teh original owner.

But probably even rarer is the TLE (Tele) Bass...never a catalog model and custom made for the top Hamer bass salesmen in the mid-80s. Also the one on the far left is listed as a "Three-Coil Bass" and was never a catalog model. Sort of a prototype based on the Hamer 6-string model actually called a Prototype. The guitar had a triple-coil humbucker at the bridge, si I'm guessing that's why the bass is called a "Three-Coil" in th factory logs, even though it doesn't have a three-coil PUP in it. Both of those basses have very Gibson-ish TBird long-scale necks on them.

The blue sparkle 90s Cruisebass is actually one of the few custom-made for Jeff Ament with his larger "Bigfoot" headstock design.

The TBird is the best of the half-dozen Hamer ones I've had and was made for the guy in Molly Hatchet and later owned by the guy in L.A. Guns. Great bass with a thinner neck profile than most of them and an ebony 'board...finish is also bursted on the back and neck.

The flying V 8-string is the only one ever made and sort of based on the very first Hamer ever made...which actually WAS A FLYING V 4-string BASS!!  Yeah, Hamer started with a BASS built for Jol Dantzig -- which he still owns!!

The Monaco 12-string Bass on the right is one of only two ever made (the other was semi-gloss black) and custom-made for Mesa Boogie in Hollywood, CA. Crazy figured top on it and creme binding. I've owned maybe 25 Hamer 12-strings and this is the best playing long-scale one of the bunch and 3 or 4 pounds lighter than the B12A ones because it is chambered. They also set it up with the octaves close together, so it plays more like an 8-string than a 12.

I own a lot of Hamers...VERY under-rated basses and every bit as good (many say better) than any bass Gibson has churned out, even in its Custom Shop.

I got to play the very first Quad bass at NAMM in 1979(?).  Very cool bass, especially with headphones.  All you need now is one of the violin basses Hamer made.  Kip Winger used one.

I still have my vinyl - not that I prefer it to CDs, because I don't - but I haven't done anything with it.

What I need to get rid of and haven't is a small collection of Pentax ME-series cameras and lenses.  Loved those film cameras but have converted to digital and don't see myself going beck.

Even my dad's 1950's Leica M3 is worth less than it used to be.  I should sell it too, but for sentimental reasons I may not.

I remember reading about those, possibly in Vintage Guitar mag. IIRC they were said to be long scale, and the bridge location in that pic seems to confirm it.

The Hamers in this pic you posted are also a couple of mine....for my next group shot of "strange hamers."  :)

And yes, the Violin Basses are longscale. They are solid body too. But, interestingly, I bought a Hoefner/Klira hollow-body body only from a former Hamer employee who got it AT the Hamer factory. I'm guessing the had it for reference when they designed their Violin Bass? I don't remember if it is a Hofner or a Klira...it's in a box in my parts stash. I recall it was an unfinished one that may still have had bindling glue residue from the German factory. Made me wonder if Hamer made a hollow-body prototype of its Violin Bass that is stashed somewhere?

Hamer made a Violin Bass for Paul MacCartney but he apparently didn't care for the boomerang inlays. I've seen Jack Blades with a couple and I know Michael Anthony has one and a collector I know has at least two....so that does not leave many others floating around.

Love mine! Plays/sounds great and looks killer with the white annodized hardware and tea cup knobs on a really dark metallic blue with oversized creme binding. One of those basses that get "whoaaaa" whenever I take it out.

That korina Standard 5 (not a Blitz) with 2TEK bridge, ebony 'board w/o inlays and the early '70s style headstock, I believe, is the only Standard 5-string ever made. A lucky "Buy It Now" EBAY score from around 10 years ago.

Here are mine in 2 separate pics.  These are my P/J's.  The '81 Washburn is the lightest of the trio with the newly acquired '84 Guild Pilot (Thanks Gary!!) a close second.  The '85 Spector NS-2 (Brooklyn) is pretty stout but sounds amazing.  It is one of the first to have the Spector bridge instead of the Badass.  I've seen #880 with a Badass and mine is #887.

Next are my "Fender" trio. (only 1 is a Fender  8) )  The '81 Kramer Pioneer Imperial is a great sounding instrument although the placement of the "J" pickup is further back than I would prefer.  I mainly use it as a "P" bass.  When I bought it somebody had added a poorly cut pickguard so it has the holes left from the long trashed pickguard.  The '76 Ibanez Black Eagle is an anvil.  Not sure why these were always so heavy but they sure look cool and sound even better!   The Fender Precision is a '57 Reissue and the pots are dated November '82.  I've not had the neck off or the pickups off to see any additional dates.  It sounds great and has a beautifully worn in neck.  It is the lightest of the trio by a long shot.  I really should get a good digital scale.

Sad to say that he quit the business (the usual reasons: it doesn't support a family) and as far as I can tell he only made three. I also know who own the other two so if they come available I'll let you know.:)

My bass was built in 2004, it was the first bass he did. There's a small print of "Made in Korea" at the back of the headstock because, to quote the luthier: "if it turns out shite it won't ruin my reputation".  ;D Hence the "Area 53" logo on the front. Luckily, it turned out fantastic.
It originally had a black pickguard but I prefer the white. I usually have the pickup ashtray on and while it looks great with both ashtrays I always end up removing the other because it quite effectively prevents palm muting.:)

I used it on our album for a few tracks and it especially sounds good with a slight distortion, as Telebasses usually do. Here's an isolated bass track bit, the Tyyster Tele played through Hiwatt DR103 and Ampeg E810 (can't remember what mic was used, probably a Sennheiser):

My Carvins. The red one is gone, the natural one is the bass I use the most. The blue one sounds the best.

They look similar but each is a different model. From left to right: B-4, TBS-4, LB-20.

Love the S's!

I did too, dut I love the v63 more.

The black one is a '92 i think, it was a refin when I bought it for $550 in 1999. The Fireglo is from 1981 and it's a darker finish that I really like.

Here is a group picture of all the Rics I currently own, '86 4001v63:

The NMPB (Neil Murray Precision Bass) is now completed and it has a doublejazz with a coil tap on the bridge, two volumes and a tone with a pull-push switch for stereo/mono (in mono mode both outputs put out the same signal). The Hosco bodied P bass on the right has a new neck. 1975 Precision neck with a fake spaghetti logo (the original logo was wiped ages ago) and a nicely aged nitro finish on the front. It has been "driven in" on thousand gigs or so and feels as good as those kind of necks usually do.

It's a P pickup from a Jazz bass Special but reversed ala BB2000 or Spector etc. The cover is made from P pickup covers.

Great group of basses

Thanks Mark!

Earlier this year, I let go of a couple of basses that I've owned 25+ years (one was my main bass back then, but I hardly played it in recent years)... I thought that might be difficult, but I've found that I don't miss them at all.  Every one in that pic has been getting gigged (even the EB-2D recently - sounded great live with it's choke mod!).  The only one that never gets taken out is that 13+ pound Ibanez 8er, but I love playing it at home.  Quite a bit different from the Ric 8, and so I can rationalize hanging onto it for a while.

Favorites are still the Triumph, 76 Bird, and 73 Ric.

A red, white, and blue shot I took last week.

Beautiful shot, and love that B12S!  On the bucket list...

Anyway, the bidding looks suspicious to me.  I think there's only 1 real bidder and I suspect the seller is pushing things up to the guy's maximum bid.

My turn:

Most of the basses I took to the Moffat Bass Bash this year: L-R - Gibson SG-Z, Yamaha BB450, G&L Tribute M-2000, Gibson RD Artist, G&L El Toro

Most of the collection as it is right now in their wee home which I made out of an old water tank cupboard (redundant after installing combi boiler): L-R - G&L Tribute L-2000, Gibson Victory Artist, Gibson RD Artist, Gibson IV, Epiphone Jack Casady, G&L EL Toro, G&L Tribute M-2000, Yamaha BB450, Fender Cabronita Precision.  Missing from photo: Gibson Ripper (restoration WIP) and Yamaha BB350F which stays in my office and gets played at lunchtimes.

How do you like that SG-Z?

You talkin' to me?  While the pickups weren't particularly powerful I didn't find it as insipid sounding as some had described it, and certainly had it going on in the looks department.  Daft output jack location/angle.  Ultimately for all its tonal options it didn't sound as good to me as my IV and as I have a few passive two pickup basses it went to fund other acquisitions.

It is gold, it is a refinish though - the Victory came to me in a rather sorry state.

Note the difference in body shape between the Jerry Jones and the Danelectro Longhorn.

Wow- nice BCRs!  That Bodine is great - don't see those around much.  Looks nice without the stringers.  Always been a fan of the Eagle bodies.

My TJ Mock has been getting most of the action here lately.  That thing would drive an ergonomics freak nuts, but it looks mighty fine, and the sound is just perfect.  It absolutely KILLS live.  I've had it just over a year now.  The wires were breaking away from the preamp board when I bought it, but I fixed that and its been solid since.  Love that bass.

The same guy I bought the Mock from is now selling his Bich Supreme 8-string in GRW.  Hopeful that I can pull that off...

You won't regret it.  I bought one for my son to learn (he promptly stole my G&L), and when I took it out to a local jam night, it held its own against every bass in the house except for an old Fender.

Nice!  Which Leslies do you have?

I have an old 145 (seen in the corner below), but need to pick up the preamp pedal for it in order to use with bass.  Just run it with a  Hammond M101 currently...

Hi, they are custom built unpowered Leslie cabinets with treble and bass rotors and a front loaded old Altec and Ev, I got them from the estate of an Hammond player. They were kinda in kit form but in a couple hours I had 2 working Leslies for $20.00! They sound incredible with the 12er, nothing like 200 lbs of chorus pedal.

I picked up a Leslie 16 a few years back, changed the 10" Utah for a 12" Peavey Scorpion. I've never tried it with bass yet, the speaker should handle it ok, but I'm sure the cabinet would rattle. It rattles some with guitar............ It does have that swirly goodness!!

Those are great for LOZ Gibsons by the way, see mine (older model, but pretty much the same amp but without the balanced inputs and an, IMHO, cooler looking lunchbox style chassis) in the show your rig thread (also, due to the LoZ inputs, if you want a reeeeeeally overdriven guitar sound, plug something HiZ into there - everythuing past 3 is more crunch)

Bach NR II (stock), Epiphone EB0 (stock), Thomann cheapo ukulele (wife decorated it with nail stuff), Epiphone LP-100 (upgraded with lipsticks and the dreaded Jimmy Page wiring), Epiphone Thunderbird IV (upgraded with a pair of TB+ and a pickguard painted by my wife).

Oh, there's a pee lying on the floor too! :P That's from a Thomann kit my wife painted. I just put a Tonerider pickup, wired it straight to jack and strung it BEAD.

That green one is actually a medium scale B8M.

Yeah, I've owned around 50 Hamer 8-strings (plus maybe 40 Hamer 12vers.) The absolute BEST playing 8 neck I ever ran across was on a white B8S from 1987/88. Traded it to Baz, who had to have it cuz it was a white one....but he traded it in a couple days later, got up the next day saying "Oh no, what did I do?" And went back to the dealer to get it back but it was already gone!

So, I was hoping that natural B8S with the OBLs would have a similar neck profile being an '88 model.
I lucked out. It is!!  I originally wanted the white one back so I could send it to Hamer to match the neck profile for a custom order.

Here is a pic from 10 years back of my Hamer 8-strings. The "Holy Grail" white B8S is the one on the left.

Here's a cooler shot of the green B8M, with two other green Hamer 8-strings....a short-scale V8 (only V8 ever made) and a long-scale Chaparral 8.

Nice!!

Your cherry one in front looks similar in year to that one I bought from Peter.  How do the late 80s 3-pc single-truss maple necks compare to the 1pc maho in terms of feel/profile?

Mine has what I'd describe as a flattened-out C profile... the back contour extends from the headstock and is very flat up to the 6-7th fret, and then it rounds out slightly.  1.5" at the nut, 2.25" at the body.  Very, very slender - especially compared to the old 12ver, which has more of a true C profile (beefy; they left more meat on that one for obvious reasons).  The latter really resonates, especially the roots - guessing because of the extra mass.

I love both of those necks, and I was just curious how they evolved...

You are correct.  Actually, I'm not sure if they are technically X2Ns or X2NBs (or how'd how I'd go about determining that).  I see people refer to both of those models in discussions of the early Hamers...

Either way, I like 'em!!  These are right up my alley, and sound especially nice on the octaves... they chime out without being brittle, great mids that cut thru in the band setting, and they take well to overdrive and distortion.
Title: Re: show your multiple bass pictures!
Post by: mc2NY on April 17, 2014, 10:42:11 AM
Most Hamer guys just refer to this a X2N's....so I don't know if they used bass specific ones back then. Plus I've had a Hamer long scale bass with an X2N at the bridge where the blades barely covered the string spacing...but the high output still covered it OK. So I think they were just X2N's.

That Cherry B8S in the photo is a real early one....SN in the 200 range. The neck is probably closer to your B12S. I've had several others in the 100-200 SN range. That natural one next to it in the photo is close to it in SN as well.

That red one was something like the 12th B8S Hamer had made. They had checked the factory logs for me at one point. Guitar dealer Ed Roman had a black one that had a later SN and changed parts on his site that he was pushing as "possibly the FIRST Hamer 8 string....all original." I knew Ed and had dealt with him in the past and told him that his bass was more like the 20th or later 8-string....but he never changed his BS....eventually sold it so someone.

The earliest Hamer 8- and 12 short-scales are mostly like that....chunky C shapes. A few were V profiles. my Quadbass 12 is a V carve and Baz had a B8S that was a V also.

Then in the mid 80s the necks got more toward how you described the red 8 you have.

Then late '87-88 there were some amazing fast/thin 8 and 12-string necks. Maybe they started using a better truss rod of something that allowed that. But these were the best single-truss coursed necks Hamer did IMO. A friend of mine had one with a bad truss rod that Hamer repaired for him.....DUPED his neck profile but did it as a dual-truss rod one!!  So.....they CAN make thin, fast dual-truss necks, if they wanted to.

Then around 1990, when they switched to dual-truss rod necks, they started off with some VERY nice neck profiles for the first few years. Sort of like the neck on your red one but faster and able to be set up really low with the two rods.

In the mid-to-late 90s, the necks started chunking up again. My biggest gripe was that it seems that they were no longer using separate 8-string profiles. Instead, a lot of the necks seemed to be 12ver necks with four less strings on them. Weird. But they vary...I've seen ones like a bat and other pretty sleek during the 2000s. Part  of the reason I wanted to have a sample bass with a perfect neck profile to send in for them to match if I placed a custom order.

I also happen to like the early mahogany necks on mahogany bodies for coursed basses because I think the octave strings are less harsh. Same thing regarding the PUPs/electronics.....I think passive sounds warmer/less harsh on the upper end.

You can't tell by looking but the X2N has an advertised DCR of 15.83k. The X2N-B is 37k.

Thanks for the detail on the necks, Jon.  Interesting to know.

Based on that, the pickups do look to be X2Ns.  The ones in my B8S measured close to that.

Yeah....pretty sure Hamer just used X2Ns and not the X2NB in the 8- and 12vers.  The "B" versions was crazy hot, as noted above like 35k.  Plus they are darker sounding, which is not what you would want in an root-octave bass sound.

Plus Hamer commonly used a Bogue preamp/overdrive circuit with/toggle and LED. Overdriving the already hot 15k range X2N is one thing.....trying to overdrive the insanely hot X2NB with that setup would be useless and just cause problems.

Also....Hamer had previously used DiMarzio Model G pickups on the earlier 8-strings, which was replaced by the X2N.  In the late 80s Hamer began offering OBL blade pickups as an upgrade, although that was fairly short lived due to supplier Bill Lawrence licensing his OBL name to Gibson and Gibby screwing him by making cheap Asian knockoffs.

But Hamer still used X2N's on custom order basses, by request, even until recent months ( yeah, yeah....Hamer is dead, blah, blah.....but they still have not finished churning out the last of the back ordered custom orders from when they announced they were not taking more new orders in 2012 !!
Plus, there is a new head of Fender coming....so maybe that guy will tell Hamer to start taking orders and stop building friggin Guilds up at the CT shop?!?!)

I have a pearl white B12S that I bought from Baz a few years ago. I believe it's a '92. I fell in love with the neck on that thing. Super flat, and it just feels right. Maple, dual truss rods. Also, the intonation surprised the hell outta me. Prompted me to spend a bunch of money on an 8 saddle bridge for my Ric 8 (no regrets there!).

It had the stock EMG HB pups, which are actually a EMG P bass pup in a humbucker-sized housing. I sent an e-mail to DiMarzio inquiring about the X2N versus X2NB. Steve Blucher replied and advised me to go with (2) neck position D Activator X pups. Same dual blade design, but they apparently have a better low end. They worked out great with a similar vibe to a Gibson TB+.

If there's anything I don't like about the bass, it's not so much the short scale, as it is the way the neck is set so far into the body. I'm not concerned with upper fret access, but it makes the bass feel "cramped" to me. I'm sure it's a concession to good balance with that giant headstock/12 Schallers, but I kinda wish it joined the body closer to the 20th fret or so.

That's interesting that he recommended two neck pickups. Do you miss the extra power on the bridge pup? I wonder if they would make the D activator X in cream. Could be a good match for my Epi LP. Speaking of LP basses, my custom LP build with Stambaugh is heading into final shaping and should be going out for finishing within a couple weeks. Between that and the return of my old P, I'm swimming in basses. I'll get some good group shots together when I have a chance. Maybe I'll get some of the girls from the newly opened "Tilted Kilt" located a few feet from my condo to pose with my basses. Should make for some exciting pics if I can pull it off.

I can't really say I can tell the difference in output. I generally run both pickups full on, but sometimes roll one or the other back a hair. They come in all different colors, and I kind of regret not getting something more interesting than all black.

One of the nicest P-Basses of any ilk that I've played. It does bear a resemblance to a Dunn, but it is a '98 Deluxe Precision Bass Special. Originally called a California P-Bass Special (US), Fender renamed it when they moved production south of the border. After a few years in that config, they loaded it with active pickups and left the name intact. The neck is J-width, and the stock pickups are allegedly US Fender units, although I never bothered to verify that. Wonderful fit and finish - a cut above most MIMs. They were available in a few colors, and also with a rosewood board.

Killer lineup! Does that green P Bass have a Jazz neck?

I very briefly had a California P-Bass Special. I think I bought it from someone at the old Pit. It was supposed to be burst, but it turned out to be black.  :o I wasn't into the black and gold vibe, so he found another buyer and I shipped it off. Cool bass though. I believe the finish was done in Mexico, then final assembly in the US on those.

The green P started out life as a Squier, and the body is the only part of it that still is. The neck is an SX "J" parts neck - $50. Bridge pup is a Thunderbird blackie. I just kept adding pieces as I found them on the cheap. It became my go to bass.

I just scored the late 1983 Guild Pilot to go with my Kahler equipped '84.  The '83 is a 20 fret example.  I owned one years ago and have known of 2 others.  Notice the pickup location difference on the 20 fret example.  They did a few headstock variations on the early ones.

Cool, I never saw a 20 fretter, or that yellow headstock shape. That makes 4 headstocks that I can think of. I also see these early pickguard models have the P pup in the standard Fender layout, rather then the reversed Spector style on the later no-pickguard ones. I played 4 and 5 string Pilots almost exclusively from about '87-99. Super light weight and great necks.

The headstock on the 20 fret Pilot is larger than the later foot type headstocks.  There was another yellow bass on Ebay recently with the same headstock shape as the yellow one I have.  I'd not seen it before either.  The one Jerry Peek is playing in this video has another shape too and it is a 20 fret Pilot.  The 20 fret models also did not have a forearm cutout so they were slab on the front but do have the belly cut in back.

I'm VERY curious about the Dimension, especially the HH fiver. How does it compare to the old Roscoe Beck signature that it replaced? That was one awesome instrument and the massive bridge it had dwarfs the Dimension's IIRC. I played two different RB's when they were being made and they were some of the most playable and versatile fivers I've ever had in my hands, and I'm spoiled by my G&L's (L5500 and L2500). It seems to my eye and ear, the Ernie Ball Stingray/Sterling 5 HH, Fender Dimension HH V, and G&L L2500 are all just about the same instrument (excepting the preamp on the Ernie Balls).  What are your thoughts on that?

I've never owned a Roscoe Beck, but two local bassists that I've worked with do. They are very different basses in my opinion. Not better or worse, just different. The shape of the pickguard seems like a nod toward the RB, but that is all that they share in my opinion. The Dimension HH V is active and has a different voice with it's (so far) unique pickups.

I wasn't aware of that. In that case, how does it compare to the Stingray 5er?
Title: Re: show your multiple bass pictures!
Post by: drummer5359 on June 19, 2015, 10:29:14 AM
My Stingray is a four string single H model, so it's not a strictly heads up comparison. But, when I bought my Dimension HH V I played it head to head with a Stingray HH 5. The Dimension seemed more versatile to me, the Stingray a tiny bit more comfortable, but not much.

I played them both through an Ampeg Classic and the Stingray sounded like a Stingray, not a bad thing at all. The Dimension does not have as distinctive of a voice to my ears. You won't hear it on a recording and say, "That's a Dimension!" On the other hand, it can sound a good bit like a P-bass, a Jazz bass or a Stingray with some knob twisting. It will not sound exactly like any of them of course, but it can cover a lot of ground.

As always, your mileage may vary...

You need a Gibson, drummer.

Yes, I'd love to own a Gibson some day. The RD appeals to me, I really prefer maple necks. Thunderbirds are an itch I'd like to scratch sometime, although I've never seen one with a maple neck. And when I was a kid I really wanted a Gibson Recording bass, later known as a Triumph.

The day that I took this picture I was setting up stands and figuring out how I was going to take the photo. My wife asked me what I was up to and I told her that I was going to take a photo of all of my basses at one time. She said, "So how many basses does my drummer husband own?" I got that deer in the headlights look and responded, "Um... eleven." She just shook her head and laughed.

For the record I only own seven drum sets these days and around twenty-five snare drums, from a high of thirty-four a few years ago. At this point something has to leave when something comes in the door. I recently bought an Ampeg SVT Classic, so one of my drum sets went out the door, a beautiful set of 1981 Walnut Gretsch USA customs. I really need for nothing.

I still have another bass on the way. It's paid for, it will just take a while to get here. It's another Rickenbacker, this time a 4003SW.

The EB has a maple neck, and this seems to be a good time to buy one. On the other hand, it seems that Rickenbacker players like Thunderbirds and vice versa.

Judging from his photo, it seems he wants them to have maple fingerboard too. So a Grabber or Ripper might fit the bill?

That's Ilan's Orfeus bass from Bulgaria. I believe the pickups were hand wound by Boris Badenov.

You missed an 11-page thread? Oh, of course, that's because it was in the Fender section.  :P  It was a limited run, based on a Custom Shop Masterbuilt one-off that had been shown at NAMM.

I told you about this one. It was shipped when I was flat on my back in the hospital last September. $700 that could have gone toward hospital bills, not returnable as it had to be special ordered at the time. If I had only known! But I'm glad I have it. I really like it.

This video gives you an idea of what it can do. Despite what the man says, the pickups are Seymour Duncan lipstick pickups that were designed for a special run Strat from 2013, not for the Rascal. And the bridge is the same one that was used on the mid-90s US Guild Starfire reissue.

its obvious that amp choices have a lot to do with tone. are all the controls set on flat? reviewers often miss explaining what the amp is and how its set up. you could have a bunch of guys with different amps reviewing the same bass and the results would be skewed. :o

My Koleckshun, minus a Squier Bronco that got left in the other room....

Back row, L>R: Gretsch 1222; Gretsch ThunderJet; Univox 335-copy ("Coily" if you wish); Gretsch 5123; Dean Stylist/Cabbie bass

Front row, L>R: Applause AE-40; 1964 Gibson EB-0; Unknown brand-probably Lotus bass, defret and refin by me; 1963 Precision.

Just for grins, here's a shot of all the solid-bodies, which includes the Squier Bronco (with TV Jones design Gretsch 2202 pickup) on the right.  I just realized - the only 34" scale basses I still have are the Lotus and the Precision.

What is that mock-Fender P straight out of hell in red and black? A satanic instrument if I have ever seen one!

That is a P/J bass of unknown brand that I bought in a pawn shop for around $60.  It was missing one string and one tuner and was covered with runny black spray paint.  I wanted a defret project, and it looked likely.

later I discovered it was probably a Lotus bass, as the headstock and layout match the Lotus pictures I have seen.

It's a laminate body but nice neck that's very stable.  I stripped it, defretted (about 8-10 hours on that, being very picky) and painted in acrylic lacquer.  Undercoat is a rattle can silver, with the top 7 coats all being clear lacquer applied using an automotive detail gun.  Four or five coats were tinted cherry red, and the edges were of course tinted black.  Three clear coats over the top, then hand-sanded and polished with 3-M Finnesse-it II machine polish.

The bridge is a very nice old Guild model I found on Ebay, where I also found the black tuners and the Dimarzio pickups. The pots are actually stack-pots with tone and volume for each individual pickup, because....why not?

It's not quite WSU Cougar crimson, but close enough.

I think it turned out rather nicely, myself.

They are making waves, three albums out, each one selling more than the predecessor. I always thought they were some horrific Thrash Metal band with grunty vocals (in fact they never grunt) before I heard them, but they are melodic to the point of (dark) pop. There is even a certain early BÖC and Doors influence, eerie but sweet.

The constrained image and the look will of course one day be their downfall, there are limits to how long you can credibly (or rather: incredulously) chant

Come Together
Together As one
Come Together
For Lucifer's Son

No doubt they will one day grow out of it and thereby split their fanbase in two.

The band plays some humebug with their identities and true look akin to early Kiss, the pope character/lead singer is just an image effigy (and has changed from album to album with not much influence on the largely layered vocals which are not really hard rock or heavy metal at all), the musical mastermind is one of the devil-masked "Nameless Ghouls", probably one of the RD playing lead guitarists. Of course, in this day and age you can google his true identity with some patience but the media is so far happy to go along with it and I haven't bothered. Thankfully, the band see themselves as "entertainers" and not as satanists. That is the thing with satanists of course, the ones that claim to be almost never are, and the ones that are don't tell.

I'm sure their image will be good enough for some CD burnings (hard to burn downloads) in the Bible Belt if they ever tour there and isn't that all that counts? If Disney endorsed them, I'm not sure whether that might not raise some unrest in more conservative shareholder quarters!

And I agree, no way Beelzebub can be pleased with a P Bass in this band, bolt-on is after all inherently a concept of that dreaded Nazarene!  8)

When I listen to their music at home Edith inevitably (after humming to the melodies at first) goes: "The crap lyrics! I can't believe that you can listen to this immature nonsense!" And I go: "What's wrong with being immature, honey?"  ;D

Yeah, they're darlings in the local music/weekly p[apoers here too.  I find their image to be a complete mismatch with the music (genrewise, the lyrics are satanic enough to match - I find that kind of shit kinda juvenile though; it's not even that shocking anymore).  The production and arrangements are good, but I find it boring (too pop).

On a positive note, their guitard rocks an RD.  ... I wonder why RD 6 bangers , when in the hands of white dudes, always get used in such non-aggressive music (see also, Foo Fighters).  The Japanese have the right idea tho as do most white bassists.

To slightly adjust the old saying about being a fervent young as opposed to a fervent old communist: If you are not a satanist at 15 you probably have no romance in you and if you still are one at 55 you probably have no sense.

There is prevalent evil in the world, no doubt, but even as a child I found it a difficult concept to ascribe it to one force only. Too easy and own responsibility-shunning. As your Canadian countryman once so aptly sang: "I can swear there ain't no heaven, but I pray there ain't no hell".  For the time being my presumptions are (i) there is no devil (ii) proof of existence of God is like proof of finish influencing sound, uhum, difficult.  Or maybe they are one and the same in a ying and yang way.

In principle, Satanism is just inverted Christianity, isn't their concept in the Alistair Crowley school of thought that Satan is not evil as he accepts man's freedom of choice while God is a benign dictator forever wishing to extradite the animal in us? We'll have to ask Jimmy Page for more details I think.

No joke: As I write this, the random function of my office stereo (I have almost 800 CDs stored losslessly in full) jumps to - you guessed it - Black Sabbath's Black Sabbath "What is this that stands before me ...". Ok, ok, I recant, the devil exists alright!

Turbonegro did it first and better in Norway, with more punk and sex and less sing-songy boredom; then they traded in Satan for satin and denim. Did you fail to notice that several of the "fans" in that Ghost BC video were clearly bored hipsters having an "ironic" experience? As for Satanism, there's plenty of non-ironic black metal out there like Dimmu Borgir and Behemoth and dozens of others. Stateside, Deicide would love to take over GWAR's perennial Faux news late nite show guest slot and even Danzig will guest on an episode of "Portlandia" next season.

As for the motive of diabolis in humanis I think the question answers itself quite nicely.
Title: Re: show your multiple bass pictures!
Post by: uwe on August 27, 2015, 04:47:31 AM
Of course Ghost transcend classic "Satanic" heavy metal audiences with their music - that is their recipe, otherwise you won't be No 1 in the Swedish charts because last I heard they weren't all Satanists there.  ;) "Ironic experience" is a good way of putting it. Ghost do it with a pinch of salt as an act. I find that relieving, not because I find true Satanism unsettling, but because I find it inane. Ghost are as "Satanic" as Screaming Jay Hawkins was.
Title: Re: show your multiple bass pictures!

Yeah, but I find joke satanism to be even stupider than actual satanism. The amount of effort they've put in to the costumes makes me skeptical of the joke though - like that thing shitty people did in high school where their tone sounded sarcastic but really they weren't; a ruse /cover/poorly concealed lie.

The "evil pope" thing was a good ruse to gain attention - sure worked with me, us Catholics like it when people dress up for the ceremonies - but its lifespan will be limited. Like Kiss, Crimson Glory or Slipknot they will one day be faced with making an image change. Even Alice Cooper had to for quite some years before reverting to type in the later 80ies.

I once played a Ric like that in a shop in Brooklyn, Kings Highway it must have been, close to where the shops of the Hasidic Community there were. Seriously tempted I was, yet take the Kubicki Factor (batteries included!!!) from Sam Ash in Manhattan I did. Guilty I am. As sin.  :-\

It was terribly set up, that might have played a role in my ultimate decision (the Kubicki had a very fast neck in comparison), but it sounded great. Back then I wasn't as confident in setting up basses and recognizing a bad set up for what it is. A bass collection approaching 200 does relax you and instill confidence in that respect.  But in 1988 I only owned two basses, a Hoyer Eagle and a Kramer XKB-10 Flying Broom (with EMGs, inserted at the bad advice of my then-guitarist  :-[ :-[ :-[ ).

I was bored today so I lined up the gibsons in the studio.  Headstocks are the prettiest part anyhoo, (nevermind the silly epiphone stuck in there)

I will send 1 us dollar to anyone who can identify all models in the photo with no additional information  ;D

Good eye! I use that board for live tracking and have been really happy with it.  I use the 16 monitor mix outs directly into an Aviom AN16 headphone system.  It makes for a really easy to use setup and a lot of flexibility for monitoring. Complete overkill for me most of the time but I have fun with it.

It was nice out the other day, and I finished stacking the logs from the dozen trees we cut down in the yard, finally. I thought, Hey, I don't have a recent pic of my basses together... (and yes, you can argue they're "firewood" compared to some basses out there... but I like 'em)
Man I gotta finish the Ash one, I've had it, like, 3 years now.

Just b/c they aren't expensive doesn't mean anyone will call them firewood.

But it looks like some woodland critters have stolen the strings off your J type. Be on the lookout for any squirrels with blue masking tape.

nothing at all wrong with inexpensive basses. i'm always on the lookout for a good one. imo many basses are way overpriced to begin with.

And THAT's why I like it here so much... I had posted at some other bass site years ago and got "run outta town"  because I didn't have some fancy (or brand-name, I can't remember which now) bass. ]
And our squirrels are going nuts (see what I did there?) gathering stuff up for winter. We have a bunch of Walnut and Oak trees in the yard, and I think 3 counties' worth of rodents are running around back there. It wouldn't suprise me if I went out there and found the Red squirrels tying the grey ones to the trees with my strings... mean buggers, those guys.

Instrument snobbery is found everywhere. When I run into it, I sometimes think of the bluesmen who sometimes played guitars that were little more than a cigar box or apple crate with a neck and strings added. Some of those dudes became famous with instruments that wouldn't have even made good firewood!

We found the mother-lode of finches and tits here... two kilos of bird seed a day...

Red squirrels have been sighted, looking very cute...

Currently 11 basses, 5 guitars, 1 upright. The 4003S/BT is my son's.

Not in the pic - my son's fretless Jazz, my youngest son's guitar (jazz box), and a Höfner 185 I bought recently off eBay and hasn't arrived yet.

What year is that Les Paul Junior single cut?

'86, 1st year of the '57 reissue I think. It's very incorrect, with modern tuners, Tune-o-Matic bridge and separate tailpiece, and wrong shape guard (humped like the guard on an SG-style Jr). Later models were more correct. But that's the way it was made and I'm not messing with it. It's actually the only guitar or bass I bought brand new.

Looks cool!  I noticed the TOM bridge, and that's what had me wondering...

I got ahold of a Jr. last year and was really blown away by the range of sound that you can coax out of it by working those knobs.  Never thought I'd like a single pickup guitar this much.

Mine is a '05 Hamer, which they had as a catalog model for a while.  It's made out of korina, and is super light weight and resonant.  Really sings!  This has the stock Wilkinson bridge and the original overwound Duncan pickup was replaced by the previous owner with a Lollar P90.  I put a set of TonePros Kluson plate tuners on it in place of the original Rotomatics.

Here's a pic of that one... (the shredder in front there was only visiting)

I like it so much I have a second on the way.  This one is one of a handful made in mahogany closer to vintage spec (stock Gotoh plate tuners w/a thinner 50s spec headstock).  These led to the production model.  If this one holds up, I might sell the korina since I really wanted one in tv yellow from the get go.

Anyway, back to basses  ;)

I have no idea what those are worth, and I can't bear to go check, because I don't want to know if I can buy it from you or not (LOVE Doublecut style LP Jrs)

Jake I'm in both of these about 1400/ea.  Used to be you could get them in the sub-1K range, but have gradually been creeping up.  If you are lucky (and quick) you can occasionally still get closer to 12-1300 range.  Usually see a few pop up every year.

The dual pickup P90 Specials show up quite a bit more, tend to run $6-800, and also get great reviews.  Most of those have the TOM bridge...

...but you can sometimes find 'em with wraptails:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/2004-Hamer-USA-Special-Mahogany-with-Lollar-P90s-wrap-tail-Grover-locking-OHSC-/221987189196?hash=item33af77b1cc:g:x8EAAOSwGotWjHev

I've always admired the Harmers from afar, but was way late to the game (first one in 2013).  Prices are getting more painful, but they are still really undervalued.  I've dumped a lot of other gear to get the chance to try some... and I have yet to be disappointed- top notch materials, borderline OCD/perfectionist builds, and gorgeous finishes.  A Gibson of equal caliber would cost dearly.

I had one of those in the 90s for about 3 years, in black. If I had kept it, I would definitely have gotten rid of the way-overwound Seymours and replaced them with vintage P90s. But I wound up trading it in for bass gear.  :)

I finally heard the SD P90 for the first time today (model SP90-3B)... and uh... yeah.  Have to agree.  I reverted that Korina Jr. back to stock and put it on the block (don't need to keep both).  The Lollar that was in there before was a night and day improvement.
It's this one from the look if it...
http://www.lollarguitars.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=LGP&Product_Code=202&Category_Code=P90-pickups

Pretty sure the yellow one I picked up has some vintage-spec Rio Grande made for the dealer that ordered 'em (I'll find out when I restring it one of these days).  Whatever it is, it sounds closer to the Lollar than the SD.
