Title: Pino modded his P-Bird
Post by: Chris P. on July 02, 2015, 03:59:42 PM
I think I posted first about it after The Who played the Super Bowl. Pino had a (Fiesta?) red Precision with two nickel Thunderbird pickups. I did some research and the bass turned out to be made by the Fender Custom Shop, but not officially. The Fender CS of course doesn't use Gibson pickups.

Today I saw The Who live. I just arrived home and it was GREAT! Pino now has a chrome mudbucker at the neck of this very bass.

I just heard the mudbucker was installed by The Bass Gallery in London.

I just started prepping my '74 P for this mod - Rick Laird style!

I wonder what the folks at Fender Custom Shop think of his latest mod.

A mudbucker at the base of the neck on a Precision....hmmm. He always gets good tone from what I have seen and heard over the years. There must be rhyme to his reason.  I wonder if it is a TB+with the mudbucker casing?... I did see a recent video of him playing his old Fiesta Precision with just the lowly Precision pups.( The Unidentified Flying Project)

Mudbucker neck pup on a P-bass?  ... sounds familiar ...

That's how the bass was when I saw them here a few months back.

I grabbed this shot from their performance at the New Orleans Jazz Festival 2015 (cameraman never showed a good closeup of the knobs/output jack section)

That's really cool.

I'm intrigued by the pickup spacing.

I think I'd have to move them all just a bit just to be happy with the cosmetics.

I think the Tbird pickups have the Tbird spacing. They are in that bass for years. What I don't like is the chrome versus nickel.

Curious to know what they are (the 'Birds AND the MB).

Apparently Lollar offers a true chromed cover as well as traditional nickel.

I just finished up building a bass inspired by Pino's Fiesta Red P...I call it the P'Nobird.

Clever, huh?

;)
