Too bad about the tuners, otherwise looks great. Correct knobs are easy to find on eBay, the teacups look out of place.

The tilted bridge is because of the black nylon strings. With a set of TI Jazz Flats the bridge angle will be different.

They are great couch basses. No need to amplify, with a set of flats (preferably TI's, don't even think about rounds) they sound SOOOO good acoustically. Much better than the small-body "Beatle" basses, and the f-holes help too. They are feather weight, and very comfortable. If I didn't already own one...

I've spent way too much on instruments in the past few months. But I'll keep an eye on it and see how high it goes. Would definitely love to own one. Describing it as a great couch bass doesn't help at all.

It's in nice shape all right. Reasonable opening bid.

Oh my, I was thinking about bidding on that one if it stays low!

The BIN is a bit high.   :-\

Whoa! I see he revised it on 3/11. The original listing had no BIN and the $700 opening bid didn't have a "reserve not met" notice.

His new $1,650 BIN is unrealistic, I think. I bought mine (same vintage, 1964) off eBay on July 2012 for $500. It needed a neck reset and a pickup rewind, but was still significantly cheaper.

When I first saw it and started this thread his opening bid was $995 and there was no BIN. That seemed reasonable to me. If it went up a couple hundred from that I thought it'd still be a nice score.

That's one time when an early bid as a placeholder isn't a bad idea.  If someone had bid, he would have been unable to change the auction terms.  But that bird has flown...and it sounds like the $995 was on the high side to begin, anyway.

He could still pull the item and then re-list it.

And now he has lowered the BIN to $1,500. The guy is undecided.

When I first saw it, 12 hours after you posted, it was definitely $700 with no reserve. So he lowered it, then added a BIN and reserve, and now he's lowered the BIN. Four different prices in four days.

I'd be very wary of dealing with anyone who can't make up his mind what he wants to sell it for. If you win, he likely wouldn't follow through with the sale or would try to make you pay extra to get him to ship it.

He does have perfect feedback though, with 114 transactions in the past year. Maybe we'll just see this one go a few rounds before he realizes what the market will bear.

That is one pretty bass, no question about it.

Another point of reference to the Senator's price... I have won this blonde 1960 Höfner 500/3 today, including original case, for $848:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/121288842097?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

My max bid was $1,250. Glad it ended at much less. Now the wait...

The bridge base looks too thin, so I won't be surprised if the bass will need a neck reset to correct the angle. And a teacup knob.

Okay, that's the fifth different price. I don't care how good his feedback is, I would never deal with him.

Thanx... I assume you mean the blonde 500/3. I have learned that they are not officially Senators, although they are almost identical.

The 500/3's were Selmer import models (hope I'm not mistaken). They were never sold to the US, according to Nick Wass, co-author of The Complete Violin Bass Story. The 500/3 was replaced by the Senator bass in 1964.

This auction is almost as entertaining as the stock market!  :)

In the meantime my 500/3 has arrived. With the neck broken off the body. There was a past amateur neck reset attempt, I think. And a shaved bridge base that needs to be replaced. I contacted the seller. I assume it was damaged in transit (FedEx). But it can be fixed, no problem. I have an excellent luthier (violin maker, specializes in uprights, and an outstanding bass player) and he can make it right.

The seller responded:
"Sorry to here that the package is damaged I packed it with loads of bubble wrap to try and support the neck for transit. I can't open the photos can you send them in a way I can view them. I did insure the package so I will have to make a claim to the parcel co "

:o  Sorry to see that- hope it gets sorted to your satisfaction.  (...and hope he actually shipped it in a box?!)

It does look repairable at least...

Disappointing, but from those photos it looks like the neck separated from the body kinda clean...hopefully minimal damage.  I wonder if it was trying to let go when it was shipped?

Too bad, but repairable and sounds like the seller will try to do the right thing.

You might be ahead of the game due to the damage provided your guy can set it correctly.  Better to have happened in transit than 6 months from now.

Agreed, insurance should pay and you will have done correctly and it'll be stable for years to come.
