No more royalty checks for Gail.

Although it's been more than a decade, Leslie was still using his LP Jr. that Collins painted on stage here and there.

Finally, one last cold kiss...

How she ever got away with nothing more than a negligent homicide conviction that is beyond me. She got 30 years more of life that he didn't, shame it wasn't all behind bars.

If I recall the story at the time, she shot him because she was unable to live with the open marriage agreement that she and Felix had once reached. I would need someone with a better memory, or information, to correct me when I state that she shot him after he had come home from a casual encounter somewhere. I don't know from there, what the foundation of the charges she faced was.
-
You remember correctly. She decided to end their open marriage agreement by executing him. It may not have been first degree murder, but it was murder. She didn't just accidentally shoot him out of negligence.
-
This article explains some of the circumstances at the time of the tragic events.

I won't celebrate this unfortunate woman's demise, but I will raise a glass for the legacy of Felix! Salute!

"Buy your wife a diamond ring, some flowers, a pushup bra," he said. "Don't buy her a gun."
No kidding.

Hear, hear! :toast:

None of us were there. Crimes of passion. Statistics have it that your loved one is the most likely person to kill you too.

We do know what she did. We just don't know if it was pre-planned or an on-the-spot decision.
-
A gun went off. She was responsible for that. Whether she really wanted to kill him - either pre-determined or right then and there - is another matter. No, you don't mess with guns in front of people. But she's not the first and she's not the last who might have had a blackout in a relationship strife.
Granted: That she called her attorney first and an ambulance only second is a disturbing detail. I'm not saying she isn't guilty of manslaughter or deadly assault or whatever, but as a lawyer I'm prepared to give her the benefit of (a little) doubt, you know how we are ...
-
I've never been able to see why committing a murder that was planned or one that someone spontaneously decided to commit makes all that much difference. Definitely, premeditated murder is worse, but it's only a matter of degree. It's not like the dead person gets to feel better if his murder wasn't planned.
One other point is that Gail Collins had her cats put to death. She could at least made an attempt to find a home for them. Frankly, just thinking about her kind of pisses me off anyway. Not a fan.
-
I've never heard of her before, and given the info presented in this thread, I'm quite happy about that.
-
She was pretty much out-there, Al, and certainly a part of the story that was/is Mountain, from the songs and lyrics to the original artwork they used...
Music is littered with joy and tragedy...

Let's make this a memory Felix and not the negative, which would be too easy... videos with him are fairly scarce, but they are out there...

Not Felix, but what he saw in the "fat kid from Queens" - a rather surprising find...

David Rea had a writing credit on Mississippi Queen and got Felix, Corky and Leslie to play on his own album.
I haven't heard this before and thought I mine as well share it here.
Sure sounds like Corky on the skins and probably Leslie playing some slide. Don't know if Felix is playing bass or something else.

That Vagrants album was re-released last year by Light In The Attic records. I bought the 180g vinyl. It's pretty great, a garage rock classic.

I guess its actually a collection of all their singles, 12 tracks, rather than an LP reissue. Here's a link:

Larry West on bass... a relative...?
-
Since we're on the subject, here's the band that never was. After hearing Corky's interview, I can guess why.

The credits on all music include Corky on drums and Gerald Jemmott on bass as well. I would think they meant Jerry Jemmott who is a monster player. Norbert Putnam cut lots of great studio tracks too. Shame you can only get it on vinyl.

His brother. He plays bass on Long Red on Leslie's latest album Still Climbing.

In the liner notes there's an interview with Johnny Ramone. They all went to Forest Hills High School at the same time. He said he mostly knew Larry from study hall. He was pretty much on permanent suspension 'cause all he cared about was The Vagrants and growing his hair.

someone tell me about the phantom keyboard guy. he's there, you can see and hear him yet no one talks or writes about him. discussions about mountain never include old what's his name. ???

Steve Knight?
-
Steve Knight was a good guy. I think he passed away not too long ago. It was more of Felix's desire to have a keys player than Leslie's I think. He did well considering what he had to contend with on stage. He wasn't in the band for their entire run. Honorable mention should go out to Bob Mann who did a great job doubling keys and guitar on the Twin Peaks album.
-
Agreed about Jerry Jemmot... got him on material with Duane Allman - Muscle Shoals stuff...
Steve Knight passed just over a year back now... rip
-
Jerry and Duane both played on the Otis Rush album Mourning in the Morning. Just saw on Jack Bruce's Facebook page that it's one of his favorite albums. There's an article in Mojo and a pic of Jack holding his Warwick signature bass with the SG shape. Jack's got a new album coming out too.

I may still have that LP but I recorded off a lot of stuff and sold on prior to going CD and now MP3 ... it was not one of my DA fave LP's...
It's a shame WB&L burned out as soon as it did...
There were a few LP's they both (DA & JJ) played on that I had... a couple of Aretha, Herbie Mann's Push Push... I'd have to go digging to find them or the DA anthology sets to check...
