Nope, that's actually the "reissue" Horseshoe pickup with the alnico slugs and non-magnetized metal "shoes." It looks like an actual Horseshoe, but it does not function the same way.

So does that mean these reissue horseshoes have no function and just for aesthetics/ thumbrests?

Yes. You can remove the metal horseshoes and the pickup still functions.

The first year(s?) v63 had vintage-specs HS pickups with magnetized shoes.

Good thinking, I have been tempted more than once to buy a rick lap. I wonder how much difference it is between the first
lap steel pickups and those on the early 4000´s. Not much info available on the different tungsten alloys from the early years, although the charlie christian unit is covered in detail. I have been in touch with factories that can cast me magnets, but it costs some.. Someday I´ll make a horseshoe for my rick, guess I have to make at least 10 units (and sell 8 of them) to cover the cost of materials.. though it would probably be cheaper to buy a 30´s rick lap.

A bad day of playing horseshoe equipped 4001 bass is still better than a good day of playing lap steel!
