Someone that used to hang around here (Johnny Crab??) had two of these and loved them. I really like the look of this one.

I've owned a Greco short scale Les Paul (only 2 pickups though LOL) and it was very nice.

Just noticed that the auction ends at a ridiculous time!

Yes! 0:36:50 PDT = 3:36:50 EDT

At least it will cut down on the number of people with their fingers poised to make a bid 20 seconds before the auction ends.  They'll have to use a Sniping service or lose sleep.

This may work to your advantage!

It's funny that some people can't figure out that they can maximize their bidding (and income) by starting and ending auctions at times when people can be awake and get to a computer.

Maybe ridiculous for us, but the item is in Japan, probably ends middle of the afternoon there.

Yes, note the $159 shipping!!!!!!

I have been known to set an alarm for an odd wee hour to be sitting in front of the compooper at a critical moment....but not all your competition will do it.

I don't think I'm up for those shipping charges - I really hadn't looked closely enough to see that before.

I shall remain relatively sane!

It went for $255.00. I've had my eyes on that one, but was only prepared to go to about a hundred bucks. The shipping was to expensive, at least for my wallet. As I'm retired I have to watch closely on my expenses, especially since my old lady does the same. She's the kind of person who wouldn't let any company go bancrupt, especially not her own household. But a hundred bucks + shipping I could have kept under the radar...  :P
Never seen those basses before... really nice looking. Seems ol' Tetsu had something to do with that bass being constructed. Remember Tetsu? Ian McLagan in The Faces said they had some drinking problems in that band, but not like Tetsus. But he's still around, turning 65 this year. Lives in Japan.  ;D

Similar story here - thought it was a brilliant, barking mad bass (and a lot nicer looking than the Gibson BFG), but was put off by the £100 postage.

However, I can't really be buying any more basses - that's 7 now and I think it's high time I spent less time on eBay etc. and more time playing the damn things ;)

Isn't that within normal range for shipping a whole instrument to the US from Japan? IIRC other posted auctions from Japan have been at least $100.

Well, given today's market for Greco basses and the evident condition of that one, it was probably worth $400 to someone.

I really should have bought that bass........... :-\

The shipping was very reasonable, 3 day service to the US. That was only $10.00 more than what I paid to ship my Greco over from Japan 3-4 years ago.

Don't let Joe see that, he'll go apeshit over those three pickups  :o

Watched that one but I've got 2 of that color. One is like new(thanks RVL) and one that is "relic'd" plus a minor surface crack in the scarf joint in the neck for $59(top picture below). They play great, pickups sound like 60's T-Birds, and the fast/thin necks do NOT like standard scale Rotosounds. His $159 was a bit steep as my last Japan bass ran about $125 or so to get here EMS(a $172 purple one like that but it was covered with stickers, bottom picture).

$400 total is not bad. I've seen a purple-burst one go for $700 total(middle picture).
Eye candy of the above is attached

Absolutely.  It costs me anything from $200 to $500 to ship basses from the US to Australia.  $150 is cheap.

It's the bottom line that counts and $400 total very reasonable IMO.

Postage that approaches the base price of the item in question annoys me.  What can I say?  I'm a percentages guy.

I'm a numbers guy, the bottom line is the number that matters.  Who or what gets a percentage and how much doesn't matter as long as it's a good deal for me in any transaction.

Potential bidders who are turned off by what they consider unreasonable shipping and/or 'buyer's premium' on an AUCTION just make it easier for a savvy bidder to get a better deal.  I admit, that bass for $350 and $50 shipping would have looked like a really good deal.  IMO if the shipping had been $50 it probably would have sold for more than $350.

Yep. That's the seller's mistake for not understanding potential buyers. Even if shipping cost him well more than $50, he could have covered the deficit by increasing the lowest he would accept for the bass. The more reasonable shipping cost would probably have meant more/higher bids on the bass and more net to the seller.

Sometimes it's a matter of HOW they overcharge.
Sometimes shipping is reasonable but he wants an exorbitant sum for the item. Other times, the item is price fairly, but they gouge on shipping. I've seen people charge over $100 to ship a bass inside the US. That's insane.

your average fender type bass can ship for seventeen bucks and some change in the 48. you don't see it that often. :P

To me it's only a matter of what I think the whole package is worth. I've got all the basses I need, but if someone should throw me a bass like the Greco 3 pup at $300.00, including shipping, I might go for it. But it got to be something I really want, if I should pay more for it. Like my first -60's Embassy. That one was $1 000, handed over in a hotel lobby in Brussels by a Swedish diplomat, plus some trouble to get it from the US to Belgium, and then to Sweden, without costs. Now, that was a true experience including one rock musician, that I had never met, one Swedish diplomat - I only knew her step sister - and two Persian teenage twins! Took a couple of weeks, but it didn't cost me a buck! Synchronization is my middle name. ;)

Now that's quite a story! An Embassy and a diplomat... that must mean the bass has diplomatic immunity.  ;D

You're absolutely right in your conslusion, Dave! Which means I'll never sell that bass. Unless the price is right, of course...
