Title: Got a new one
Post by: Andrew on March 31, 2008, 06:49:22 PM
Got a new one, and it's old and beaten.  ;D 1973 P-bass, B neck, 8.15 lb.  featherweight. Love it!

There's an attached thumbnail pic in his first post that you can enlarge. Isn't it visible to you?

EDIT: You should be able to see it now.

Did I do something wrong in how I attached the pic Dave, or was it another issue?

Thanks guys, I feel pretty lucky to have gotten this one.  :)

Andrew, it was another issue, a problem with the default Global Moderator settings. Fixed now.

So very nice and it appeals to me in several ways.

First, after playing rosewood boards much of my life, in the last five years I've become a huge fan of maple boards.

Second, gray bottom pickups. Aren't they lovely? So aggressive and with that fantastic mid-range the good Fender basses have in abundance. I'll bet your bass sounds great in the studio and has cut-through of the gods when playing live.

With the grays and the maple, be careful that bass doesn't bite you head off!! ;D

Congrats on a stunning looking bass.

+1 on what George said about gray bottoms.

If I'm right Grey Bottoms are vintage only. Is there a good modern solution for the same sound?

I have tried a few reissues and none sounded like real gray bottom pickups. I am seriously considering buying one or two sets off eBay, as a backup or for future restorations. You can still find a good condition P split pickup for under $200. I'm sure prices will rise in the future.

This (http://cgi.ebay.com/VINTAGE-FENDER-PRECISION-BASS-P-BASS-PICKUP-1977-F_W0QQitemZ190219765453QQihZ009QQcategoryZ22670QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) was a good deal, I was watching the item and thinking about hitting the BIN... until someone else did.
