Title: Peter Cook Bass for sale (sort of...) Entwistle link...
Post by: Highlander on September 20, 2009, 01:54:16 PM

Ned Callan bass, almost certainly built by Peter Cook, but with a reserve not met and as a double neck "Firebird" went for less than £500...

I'd buy her for curiosity value (as stable mate for my T'bird, but no damn cash...!) as these were endorsed by JAE...

Ken, what's the connection between Ned Callan and Peter Cook?

Very cool bass with the JE connection.  Are you anywhere nearby the seller to be able and check out the bass?

The strange thing is that I've only seen pics of JAE with that bass in the adverts, but I have never seen pics of him playing it live.

Dave and Chris... Peter Cook built this range of basses (probably how JAE got involved and why there are no live pics) for "Ned Callan", as well as a (Shaftsbury) Ned Callan guitar nicknamed the "Nobbly Ned" - there was one up for sale but has now dropped off... not a pretty instrument... "day-job" work to pay the bills I was led to believe... got a pic somewhere...

Hornisse... about a 2 hour drive...

Rob... I've always thought that too...

Tony... Peter Cook had his own pups (or something made for him, stamped on the casing with his name, and potted with a white ceramic like compound), so it may have been one of his... If I ever locate the remains of the damaged one or the the other "working" one I'll post for opinions, but for the life of me...

and Saf... I agree...

Can someone buy her and keep her safe until I get rich...?  ;)

EDIT
this is the link to the "Nobbly Ned"...

The addendum at the bottom of the unsold item notes that "Ned Callan" was a nickname used by Peter Cook...? - didn't know that, also a reference to a "CODY" bass version, also used by JAE...?

A FURTHER EDIT WHEN I SHOULD HAVE SHUT THIS THING DOWN AND GONE TO BED BUT GOT SIDETRACKED AND NOW IT'S GONE ONE...
from the "Shergold" website...
Ned Callan" - A pseudonym for British custom luthier Peter Cook. Shergold were commisioned to make these guitars that were designed by Peter. Shergold are known to have produced both the "Cody" and "Hombre" under this arrangement. Due to their "distinctive" (read weird, though not displeasing) appearance these guitars quickly earned the nickname of "nobbly Neds".

AN OMG EDIT WHEN I DEF SHOULD HAVE GONE...

So nobody has ever seen Ned Callan and Peter Cook in the same room at the same time.  ;D

Sort of like how no one has ever seen Suzi Quatro and Rick Derringer in the same room at the same time.  ;)

Bummer re the "borrowed" copy...

"CALLAN", starring Peter Cook, as Ned Callan...  ;D

Suzi's holdin' out quite well, either that or the botox...  :o

I'll bet Ned Callan is every bit as real as Jay Turser and Carlo Robelli.  :-X

Sorry Dave... excuse my ignorance on that one...?

I reckon the seller's got too high a reserve and no-one will be willing to try and find out... been wrong before... very few will even know who he is/was... the guitar didn't sell...
Title: Re: Peter Cook Bass for sale (sort of...) Entwistle link...

I meant that AFAIK Jay Turser and Carlo Robelli are just brand names, not real people.

Those Sherwoods look like WALs to me. Is there a connection too?
Title: Re: Peter Cook Bass for sale (sort of...) Entwistle link...
Post by: Highlander on September 24, 2009, 01:47:14 AM
I've done a bit of searching on this, Uwe, but can find nothing conclusive... the "Shergold Marathon" appears to be the name of the model in question and a discussion forum (on the same site) references the "similarity", even with WAL users saying how good the "Marathon" is... like a Wal, but without the complication of the gadgets, the "bells and whistles", with one person going as far as saying they prefer their Marathon...!

I can only conclude that there was parallel evolution... must say that the single pup (mahogany?) model does look rather interesting...

Several references to "Ned Callan" and "Peter Cook", but nothing new other than later Cody/Hombre's being Japanese imports...?

This was interesting, albeit a guitar...

Ths TRC is very similar to my PCC cover... possibly who made them for PC...?

If anyone wants to dip into the history of those instruments, this is their forum...
http://www.shergold.co.uk/forum/index.php (http://www.shergold.co.uk/forum/index.php)
... and this is the Shergold (formerly Hayman Guitars) site...
http://www.shergold.co.uk/index.html (http://www.shergold.co.uk/index.html)

Sad thing is, they're all history; mostly forgotten history; like most of this country...

EDIT - lifted another bit as a seperate post re a WAL-alike...

Maybe he'll come down on the price too.  It did not meet reserve.  If it becomes reasonable I'll buy it and you can pick it up and mess around with it for a while.

I remember seeing a Shaftesbury 4005-ish Ric copy.  Closest thing I've ever come across in that realm, but it had more of a 330-style body.
Title: Re: Peter Cook Bass for sale (sort of...) Entwistle link...

I believe Shaftesbury was  budget brand in the sixties. A brand of an English agent (Arbiter?), but made in Italy. Mostly Rickenbacker-copies. I've seen some guitars. I don't think it has much to do with this.
Title: Re: Peter Cook Bass for sale (sort of...) Entwistle link...
Post by: Highlander on October 01, 2009, 01:02:33 PM
As far as I've found out, Chris, they were built in the UK (Don't know of Ricky's, remember Gibbie coppies, LP style, late 60's to mid 70's - "Dallas Arbiter" as in Hendrix' "fuzz-face", of which I have/had an original up in the loft somewhere, directly linked to... early models - by Shergold) and Japan (later models - by ?), from a design by Peter Cook, after items he made for JAE...

Hornisse... he has added UK postage now, but verify how he will package her before placing a bid, also if it's a bolt-on neck... if you do go for it that would make shipping over to you a lot easier... it won't help on pricing but my company looks after security for TNT and FEDEX, so I'm in their sites at least weekly... I can still collect... 250 mile round trip, but may be able to arrange to be in area so collecting in van at company expense...  ;) not that I'm keen to assist, you understand...  ;D

I have a variety of searches for these items now, so will keep looking, too...
Title: Re: Peter Cook Bass for sale (sort of...) Entwistle link...
Post by: Hornisse on October 01, 2009, 02:30:13 PM
I'll check and see if they will ship directly to you to avoid the trip.  I'll ask about the neck too and see if it is a bolt on one.

They can ship the bass directly to you which is good.  The bass has a bolt on neck too.  I'll keep my fingers crossed!

Didn't sell, again... topped out at £230 this time... pm'd the seller to be realistic or put her up in a dedicated collectors auction, and not on ebay... that was a realistic price for a bass by an obscure long forgotten luthier, no matter how well he should be remembered...

You posted as I was posting, Hornisse (what is your name btw?). Did you "win" her...?

Dragged this back up as another one has just come up for sale, without a reserve... this one has researched the instrument, and even sbelled the name right...  :P

Possibly a bit high considering the best last time was £230...

I'm sure this has been up before at £300 ($484) but at this realistice starter price and as she's a fretless (read heavily modified) she may not attract as much interest, so may be interested myself...

Welcome aboard, Eventide.

I don't know what it might be worth, there are a couple of people here who will be able to offer an opinion.

In the meantime, if you haven't already seen it, take a look at this thread: http://bassoutpost.com/index.php?topic=4937.0

Welcome aboard ET...

There are two of us here that own "directly" built Peter Cook basses (as I now undersdtand it) - Eric owns a Firebird "Twin" and an "Axis", I own a "Thunderbird"... no one I know owns one of these although one of the crew is after one if the beastie came up cheaply enough - I would certainly like to own one...

This is an occasional thread that I started some time back and I have a permanant watch for them... it details pretty much all of them and any related instruments that have come up, and what they have sold for so if your enquiry is for a sales value the you will only be disapointed - from an insurance perspective, you have something that was not built in great quantities but could only be described as an obscuirty...

If it had been one of JAE's Fenderbirds, you best avenue would be to contact a high-end auction room, or maybe Hard Rock...

Finally... may I congratulate you on being a member of a very select band of players... use the bass, don't sell her and remember her heritage... She's part of British Rock history... I'm not a collector, I'm a player; my Peter Cook was built to be played...

Oh yes, nearly forgot... pics please... the general rule here is that if the pics don't appear theres nothing but virtual words on a virtual page... what would be nice is some sound clips with a review...

Hi to everyone.

I will get my brother to take some pics of the beast and i will then upload them. She is in need of a little tlc but nothing to major but well worth doing as she is around the 40 year old mark. They say life begins at 40 anyhow. It has a glued on neck which from what i have read suggests that its an early model.... :)

Thanks for all the info and help so far.

Nice to finally see one on here...

Last two that came up for sale went for £230 and £257 - they do not go for much... not seen one up for sale for a while...

Does this one have a "set" or "through" neck...?

Start from the beginning of this thread and you will pretty much find out all there is to know...

Headstock looks different to images I've seen - any chance of a close-up...?

This is the first one of anything that has cropped up for some time - a sister to Eric's AXIS bass...

Again, as before...

Peter Cook built Mighty Mite custom Strat (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mighty-Mite-Peter-Cook-Rock-One-in-natural-mahogany-037-Guitar-USED-/151272012878?ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:GB:1120#ht_234wt_1163)

Something of note here is that he built 200 instruments in this series - 100 Strats and 100 Precisions

Something else I've remembered is that he was commisioned for some time to set up all Gibsons that landed on these shores during this time period, iirc - just something for FE's notes...

Again, as before...

Peter Cook built Mitie Mite custom Strat (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mighty-Mite-Peter-Cook-Rock-One-in-natural-mahogany-037-Guitar-USED-/151272012878?ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:GB:1120#ht_234wt_1163)

Something of note here is that he built 200 instruments in this series - 100 Strats and 100 Precisions

Nice, but do I understand correctly that he just assembled this from Mighty Mite parts? If so, I can't see it being worth that much. No doubt the assembly was expert and Mighty Mite parts were always decent, but it's still an early 80s Korean parts guitar.

I don't remember anything specific about these, Dave ... did he manufacture the body or is this an MM part too ... ?
Tags are the only significant item here, and only to a very specialised collector ...
This is how often his items appear on the 'bay, that's it ...

Who were the UK Gibson distributors during the 80's ... ? Anyone know ...?

No idea. Describing it as a "Mighty Mite Peter Cook Rock One" sounds to me like it's put together a from Mighty Mite body and neck. If the pickups were the only Mighty Mite parts, why would you title the auction like that? Mighty Mite pickups aren't anything special.

Thanks, Carlo. That puts it in a slightly better light and there would be some added value to a Peter Cook fan, especially since it's a limited edition. But in the end it's still a parts guitar assembled and set up by Peter. And despite the Rosetti ad copy that these were assembled "using 100% USA Mighty Mite parts", I'm almost sure there were never any MIA Mighty Mite parts. The company is 100% American, the parts were MIK at the time (now made in Indonesia).

Hi to all.

I see this has cropped up again. :)

Norlin, were the distributors.

Here's the bit about Peter and Gibson.

I have been VERY busy over the last 6 months but hope to be a more regular visitor, soon.

I have a BIG Flat Eric event, next Tuesday - Top Secret at the moment but I'll let you all know, as soon as
I am allowed to.

There, that'll keep you hanging on, for a while!!

Cheers. :)

Well I guess it's somewhat interesting that my Fenderbird has a Mighty Mite neck (MIK).  ;D
