Okay, I fondly remember a thread quite some time back in DP? in which we all said what we did for a living..... There's lots of familiar names here, but also plenty of great folks that I wouldn't mind knowing just a little better.
So what do you do for a living? What puts the bread on your table........and gets you a new Gibson Bass every now and then? Like it, Hate it? Got a pic to share?

My job for those of you that don't know is: as one of three managers at Seattle Lighting's largest showroom just south of Seattle. And tho I make it a point to "antagonize them in small ways almost everyday, its really a nice place to work, as this pic shows.

At the moment, I only really work out of home or out in Venice,CA where my boss lives and has set up his business. Kind of just depends how important and how much work I am doing at one time to decide on which location I work from. Currently I have only really done Animatics which is helping me fund money to get the hardware and software to move up and get more work.

I'm a marketing rep at AT&T. Which is a nice way of saying salesman. I work for the Yellow Pages & Yellowpages.com. I used to like the job, not so much right now. It's a tough business climate right now. Hard to convince business owners that in a tight economy they need to increase their advertising or at least keep it where it is. We do the best we can and I'm grateful I'm working!!! It's helped me fund a lot of equipment over the years.....

i work at my son's roofing company. he was kind enough to throw the old man a bone when i could not continue my landscaping business due to health problems. i don't actual do any roofing work. i'm the guy that shows up when you owe us money. in a nice way of course.

I do a number of thing to keep the $ rolling in to feed my bass habit. My bread and butter is furniture repair/restoration for a large NE furniture retailer. I also have a small antique business-buy/sell, repair/restore. I flog stuff on ebay and most fun I buy and sell vintage basses and associated gear. Oh yeah I make replacement bridges for vintage Gibson Thunderbirds.

I'm working for Chase Home Finance, doing production support for their document imaging system. Computer crap, I call it. We're one of the very few home mortgage operations that's not in the toilet right now.

Until recently, I was a college admissions counselor. My new gig isn't as glamorous(managing a video store), but there's a lot less drama. I was the only man in the Admissions department at the college. I'm also going back to school in May.

I work in Camborne, Cornwall, England. I run a property management company renting out out houses. It is great fun as everyone who works there plays bass or guitar. There are no really good guitar shops in the area so thank God for ebay! :D

I popped a couple pictures at work today to celebrate that I'm actually working again! If the actors don't go out in June I may actually make a living again this year. Being back in my old career feels comfortable, but now comes the challenge of improving my skills and growing with the technology. So my job is basically getting paid to watch TV and movies all day:

I work for an insurance company that deals in excess/surplus and specialty lines - high risk property, commercial liability, etc... They write a lot of oddball policies too - insuring celebrity body parts, athletes legs and feet, and the like.
In order to hold policy data on something like J-Lo's butt, you need secure secure server, data, and storage network infrastructure, and that's what I design as an IT Architect.
At the office, we have seas of cubicles and conference rooms (in which I spend a staggering amount of time), and a couple of datacenters. Here are some older pictures (~2003) that I had snapped of a robotic tape stroage library, and disk storage array:

Room 101,huh? You have to play Fender basses there ...
It's just the way they photographed it though, in real life it is not that foreboding, it's a pretty weathered building and Frankfurt's oldest high rise by now, stemming from 1980 (all the older ones have already been torn down and replaced by new ones). We're by far the largest tenant - no doubt if we ever move out, it will be torn down too. So far we haven't, because for all its old age and general ugliness, it uses space very effectively. Whenever our lease runs out and we have our mind set on moving, the landlord comes up with some enticing package to make us stay for another few years and renew the lease. Next time, I'll demand a Gibson Bass museum from them!!! ;D

And to be sure that I am a complete and hopeless dork when it comes to lighting etc........ when looking at Joe's shot of his beautiful collection, I couldn't help but notice the group of switches on the wall for his room lighting.......So I'm thinking to myself. Are they Lutron? Lightolier......maybe Leviton.
I need a life!!

You'd be proud of me - I even installed some of those nifty touch-sensitive dimmers with no moving parts. :)

I'm the same way with TV and movies. I notice flaws in continuity and color, dirt and negative scratches, audio being slightly out of sync, you name it... I've even got my wife trained to see stuff now! (I don't want to be the only one obsessing over that stuff in the house. ;D)

I really can't go anywhere and not notice lighting, once you know what to look for you'd be surprised at how much of it is just so bad........

I was a commercial underwriter years ago, and one smaller company I worked for had an associated general agency that wrote special risks. Lots of interesting stuff, like hole-in-one insurance for golf tournaments.
And products liability for hard-to-place items. I remember one product was a...well, let's call it a lover's lube, the type sold in vending machines in restrooms. It made miraculous performance enhancement claims but it was nothing but lanolin and mineral oil. It was really not a high risk product. But I remember it because of the yearly correspondence between us and the carrier, it was legendary for double-entendres and other jokes.

My last employer was a medium-sized insurance company. They wrote sexual harrassment coverage for the clergy. And the hole-in-one coverage, as well.

I'm a college administrator/faculty member at Roberts Wesleyan College, a cozy little college in Upstate NY. My subject area is health administration and bass rehabilitation. Hope to retire in a couple years and focus on bringing bass disasters back to life.

My job's not as cool as George's (very jealous). I work for Carrier A/C in Irving, TX as a senior supervisor in the packaging unit. We supply the parts to connect the A/C units in new homes. Busy bee.
I was a pro bassist for almost 30 years before this. Not exactly what I envisioned for myself years ago on the road but life is funny sometimes....you never know what's around the next curve.

wow was one of my favorites as a kid. I remember reading that if the piolet had to eject, the rear fudsalage has explosives in it that blow away the rear engine so the the piolot does not turn into ground beef!

Thanks, Ray. I actually enjoy my job most of the time, so I consider myself blessed. One thing I've learned to accept is that you never know what life's gonna bring your way. I figure any day above ground is starting off right, so why complain? ;D
I think it's really cool you were able to make your living playing bass for so long, but I'm also glad you're able to have something more stable now if that's a better fit in your life at the moment. You're a cool guy in my book...
