Title: small bass amp
Post by: ampang on February 18, 2008, 07:39:49 AM
Hi,
I'm thinking about getting an amplifier for studio needs.
It should be ideally:

--integrated/combo
--small-ish enough
--all valve (or at least valve in the preamp)
--able to deal nicely with mudbucker bass

old or new...

Any idea?

Mark Bass F1 (500 watt digital power supply & digital amplifier) small, rugged, great tone, super light and super small...add to that a small Schroeder speaker cab of your choice and you will be golden!

For anyone who is curious: http://www.schroedercabinets.com/bass.htm

Thanx for the info. The F1 is really attractive in fact...And if I want to stay in the vintage stuff, any valve amp suggestion relatively lightweight but good sounding for vintage tones (EB3   etc)?

If you've got the money, look at the Phil Jones Flightcase amp.

I like my very cheap modern Vox T25. A little solid state combo. The sound is very similar to a big tube head. But maybe the sound isn't well enough for studio needs.

For studio needs, I'd say the Ampeg Portaflex B-15 is the perfect amp.

But you can't call that small, I guess? I would love to have one though.

I think it is small. Really they're not that big.
And who cares if they're heavy. You don't need to haul them around if it's for studio use only.

You have a point there.  But if you don't haul them around you can also take a bigger one;)

A good (tube) DI and Amplitubes will work too.

A good (tube) DI ... will work too.

I've been very happy with DI thru my Alembic F2-B.

Mr. Barr had a B-15 in his GFS section months ago that I resisted with every fiber in my being.  I was so very tempted by it (fair price, local pickup).  There's so much other recording stuff I need/want more, though, and because I've been able to get good consistent results with the Alembic, I'm fine with that for now.

I think there are a lot of good (tube) DIs available at the moment for fair prices.

I bought a new Acoustic B20 combo amp and love it.  I use it for home practice and it just sounds great.  The 12 inch speaker handles a low B with no problems.  Very inexpensive too.  Not a tube preamp, but very warm sounding.

Now that sounds interesting. I looked at Music123, it even looks nice.

Have you tried the headphone jack with a decent set of phones? I've got some good Beyer headphones, looking to be able to practice late without bothering any neighbors.

Have not tried the headphone jack yet Dave.  I'm ashamed to say I can't find my old Koss headphones!

At that price it's probably worth taking a chance. If it sounds good through the speaker it should be okay through the headphone circuit. Did you buy it locally?

I did buy it at the local Guitar Center.  I was there again today and they have them available as well as an interesting looking one called a B50 I believe.

is there a site about the new Acoustics?

I haven't found anything yet. Just the description at online stores.

The B50 Robert mentioned is wedge shaped and is said to be for acoustic basses.

The few reviews I've found have all been positive.

I did find this (http://p082.ezboard.com/funofficialacousticcontrolcorpmessageboardfrm13.showMessageRange?topicID=5.topic&start=1&stop=20) thread from the "unofficial acoustic control corp forum" but it's 15 pages long and I don't feel like digging through it right now.

Dave, does Music123 have a liberal return policy like Musician's Friend? You wouldn't be risking much if you had the option of returning the amp within 30 days if you didn't like it.

I seem to remember a thread from three or so Dudepits ago that was about some headphones that were exceptionally well suited for practicing bass. I can't for the life of me remember what they were though... Anyone remember? If you had those and an amp that worked well in that situation, you'd be set!

George, Music123 is now a subsidiary of GC just like MF. GC bought it and its sister Woodwind & Brasswind out of bankruptcy early last year. Each is operated as a separate company but the merchandise and pricing on each website is identical. And the return policies are the same. Almost all the merchandise comes out of the same Kansas City warehouse. GC's online division is part of this too.

When I had to return something to Music123 last fall and they sent me a prepaid return shipping label (because it was their mistake), the return was addressed to MF.

My headphones are for hi-fi listening, they don't have an exaggerated low end like some studio phones do, but they have good, clear low end. If the amp circuit is good, they'll sound good.

Could be nice for a new thread. Bass headphones and mics.

Another small combo I noticed today while looking on the Harmony website.
http://harmonyguitars.com/ProductHome.asp?pl=amps (http://harmonyguitars.com/ProductHome.asp?pl=amps)

While I doubt seriously that its a tube amp, it might still have a nice vintage sound; or at least it has the looks for it.

Thanx for pointing me at this one

http://www.acousticamplification.com/products/b20.cfm

unfortunately it seems not available in Europe as far as I have seen...is that true?
If I were in USA I'd buy it without exitation (110 or so $)...but with shipping and all it is not worth the effort maybe.

Any place in EU where they do stock it?

Roland has a single 12 amp that is pretty sweet too. It has electronics that reproduce a number of great old amps including the B-15, SVT, Acoustic 360 and Bassman. This is definately one to check out.
