Title: Music videos featuring Gibson 20/20 basses.
Post by: Grog on July 20, 2017, 01:11:16 PM
Rob's video may be the only one out there to date, but it's a start! Once the 20/20 reissue comes out in 2020, we'll be ready at the LBO!

These are great songs and the bass tone is superb. Was paging through some of your live videos and saw some other unique basses. I'm guessing these are basses you customized?

The red Les Paul bass is the first bass I built myself. Initially it had two G3 single coils in the neck position and an Artec mudbucker in the bridge position. But I was a bit disappointed with the two single coils. They didn't sound dense enough for my liking. So I asked Dutch luthier-par-excellence Eugen Wulff (Gun Customs) to make me a new pair that would be a drop in replacement with a phatter sound and more punch.

The other bass is a shortscale BaCH semi acoustic bass. It originally had just the one mudbucker at the neck. I put a pair of Gibson Les Paul Bass lo-z humbuckers in.
I only connected the last coil tap on both pickups (full windings). And didn't bother to make an in- or out- phase option. Just a three way pickup selector toggle, volume pot and tone pot.
This bass sounds huge. The pickups are placed a littler wider from each other than they would be on a Gibson Les Paul Bass. This makes the difference between neck pickup and bridge pickup a bit bigger.
Favorite setting ( same as my Les Paul bass) is both pickups engaged.

Alas!, what amounts of ridicule I had to put up with when I dragged the first one along at I think it was still the Dudepit ... Retribution!

It took me at least ten years to see the genius of the design.

One day, many moons ago, I was Googling any information I could find on the 20/20. I came across a link; "Uwe! Gibson 20/20". That was my first exposure to the LBO. Since then, I bought a second one & still haven't been shunned here................

This isn't really a music video. It's an informational video using random photos of guitars he found on the web, including a photo of my basses &  photos from Rob's book.

On a separtate note, it looks like a 20/20 is for sale in Australia. Other than changed knobs, it looks to be original............

Ten seconds in and I knew it was a Trogly video and hit the stop button. He's a guy who uses 100 words where one will do. Even if he got to the point quickly, his voice is one of the most annoying on YT.

Assuming that 20/20 in Australia is priced in AUD it would be less than $900 USD.

I like the effort the dude in Australia put into his homemade hard-shell case. I just made an insert to fit into a Chinese rectangular case.

Jules Haffegee made and excellent video of the 20/20!

And now everybody knows how the 20/20 they might come across one day will sound on their Lab Series L2 amp :)

Seriously, I like this vid. Every Gibson bass needs a good non-shop-guy-focus presentation on a real amp.
That is Fly Jules, right?

This is just part 1  - dealing with the 20/20 controls. Part 2 (to follow) demonstrates the AWESOME Lab L2 midrange frequency control.

I've been in the valve = good, SS = lame camp for years, but that is changing. The Lab series amps are incredible, and usually very affordable. Controls (like all late 70s Gibson stuff) need to be mastered in order to get the best, but these are INCREDIBLE amps.

My third 20/20 video (also to follow) demos it through a valve amp - a Marshall 2061X 20w lead/bass reissue. Again incredible amp!

Never heard a Lab, at least - not yet. I work with tube amps on a daily basis, but it's always fun when transistor amps of proper design comes in to the shop. And yes, prices are usually good too. Just a shame people still compare good ones to the first fender/marshall transistor efforts, or even more recent class d amps without hearing them.

As a sidenote, last week I got this Allsound Leslie (made in Germany) 'stack' in for tube change and general service. The owner, who plays in an outfit that was active in the late 70's, wanted it tip top as the band got a 70's record reissued, and they did some shows still. He was more than surprised when I told him that it was a transistor amp, but I must say - anything you plugged into this amp sounded really good..

Indeed.

Kind of awkward choice to play the left hand part of a keyboard part on a bass so disconnected from the keyboard.
He does look/sound like a tight bass player. Even though it does not work for me on this particular song.

He looks hyper concentrated. Not very relaxed.

And so would I playing even attempting to play this stuff! Not exactly an intuitive bass line, very jazz rock-funk-left hand keyboard'ish. That even could memorize the parts (because he is obviously not reading them).

Back in 2014 Definition Of Madmen invited a bunch of friends to the rehearsal room called The Bunker. The Bunker is an air raid shelter which was converted into an underground bar.
The idea was to make a live demo for promotion. Just play live in front of our friends. Some drinks. Lots of fun.
But we faced some technical challenges. There was a noise we couldn't eliminate. Each time the fridge switched on, we got a spike in the audio. And one of the three cameras appeared to have recorded only stills instead of video...
As a result we never bothered to use any of the footage.
But yesterday Mick Hup (lead guitars and lead vocals) managed to fix the spikes and noise. He mixed the audio and edited the video footage that survived several hard disk crashes.

Song: Common Sense
Band: Definition Of Madmen
Mick Hup :Guitar, Lead Vocal
Rob van den Broek: Bass, Vocal
Lars Koetsier: Guitar
Theo Outhuyse†: Drums.

Recorded & Filmed live at Buisje Bunker's place
