Title: A new prototype: FG/BT w/CB binding, ebony fretboard
Post by: ilan on June 16, 2017, 12:33:51 PM
RIC posted this to fb (https://www.facebook.com/ricguitars/photos/pcb.1422235891193391/1422235594526754/?type=1&theater) and Twitter: "A prototype finished today. General production worthy or nah?"

There's also a pinkish 4003. RIC used the hashtag #mykindoftownchicago so my guess is these will be sold by CME.

Nah on that Fireglo, if that's what they're calling it.

Double nah on the Pepto-Bismol pink.

Triple yay on the pink, but with all black hardware. Looooooong shot, I know.

I have fulfilled my quota of pink basses (1), and even if I hadn't, I would never consider it on a Ric.

However, I find the FG variant very appealing.

I could go for that....

Regarding the Pepto-Bismol pink finish, I have learned that it has a name - Metallic Plumglo - and in 2014 a small number of 4003's and 620's were made in this color for the Japanese market.

This morning on FB I saw a photo from Ernie Ball of a pink Stingray and the actual name is Pepto Pink. Hopefully a very limited edition.

Hot pink was a guy color in the 80's.

It's for aging 80s rockers with digestive issues.

Well as you know Aerosmith's Dude Looks Like a Lady was written about Motley Crue's Vince Neil.

And how would pink paisley look on a 4001/3?

I worry that the person who thought up Muzak may be thinking up something else.

On the other hand my regular supermarket has an excellent stream of original classic rock/R&B tunes.

Terry Bozzio is still a beast although maybe not as cute when he used to go shirtless. My mancrush on him is probably due to too many endocrine disruptors in the environment.

Here's a very rare (one off? Paul?) '79 LH/FG/BT on eBay (http://www.ebay.com/itm/112470575792). Only the plastic parts (pickguard, TRC, body and neck binding) are black, the metal parts are chrome. IMHO it looks way better than the current prototype.

I do like the current one, but totally agree - the '79 is gorgeous. Chrome baby!

It's hard to say "one off" and Rickenbacker in the same sentence anymore. WOW! This being a '79 4001 explains why it doesn't have the blackened hardware as that didn't come around until 1985 (possibly late '84), but what is unusual about this is that the NECK has black binding. Most 4001 that have black binding have it on the body only, with white binding on the neck. But "never say never" and here is the proof. And a lefty at that. Fireglo with black binding is unusual enough. WOW!

That IS odd for something that old. My white '79 with black binding had white on the neck.

I wrote to the seller (through the listing) and asked if he could send his photos to me for use in the "maybe someday" 3rd Edition of the book. But radio silence.

That ebony board on a Ric looks plain weird and I don't see what aural benefits it would bring either.

The pink one I like because it is a nice pastel pink, not a garish one - like that obscene Stingray.
