Title: Would you buy a copy of the Gibson Bass Book?
Post by: Basvarken on September 01, 2016, 11:50:43 AM
Some of you may know that I've been working on a book about Gibson basses for quite a few years.
Well, the book is finished! And I can have it printed. The only question is, how many am I going to have printed?
So I need your help. How many of you would be interested in buying the book?

The book consists of 180 pages.
Printed in full colour on 115 grams matt MC. With 300 grams soft cover.
Over 400 pictures of more than 80 different Gibson models (and more than 70 Epiphones).
Each bass has it's own short description with little facts.
It is not a scientific / encyclopedic piece of work, but rather the work of an aficionado.
But it is the only book in the world about Gibson basses! 8)

The price will be € 30,-
Shipping cost depends on where you live (EU and US € 11,50)

The idea is to have the book available within two months from now.
I would like to know who would be interested in buying the book. This is not a sign in list (I may do that later).

Here's a few examples from spreads in the book:

Do you mind if I link this in an Australian bass players forum, Ozbass? There may be a few guys there that may be interested.
Also might be an idea to post in the Thunderbird Club on TB. There are guys there who may also be interested (some of which frequent here, but maybe not all).
Looks good BTW.

I'm in as long as I can afford the final cost.

€30 = $33.60 today. The way the Euro has been going, it may wind up being less.

Oh yes, please do. Thank you.
I've already posted this over at Talkbass. But a post over there always sinks back a few pages within an hour or so.

I also have a website up, where I will be selling the book. At the moment, there is not much to look at. But I will fill the site when I have the books printed and well.

I don't think they'd appreciate cross posting? But if you direct folks to my post maybe it helps?

It seems to stay afloat now that Mark has mentioned it in the Thunderbird-corner!
Of course there's always some Fender fanboy that needs to make gratuitous comments. But that wasn't unexpected :-)

Have you looked at getting this to Amazon?  They have 50 bazillion titles available - if you got it to them you might sell a more than you expect. That and missus Lightyear has a close and personal relationship with them -  I could have my book delivered with our daily drone drop.... :-[

Plenty of good comments there, though!
As I said over there, you will get some double counting from the two polls.

Apparently it is forbidden to ask if people would be interested in the book.

Oh well. I kind of expected it to happen.  :-\

Do they allow folks to advertise their own instruments for sale or manufacture over there...? Not a place I visit... that's a bit like someone asking if they would be interested in a Bach NR if they built it...?

Re-arrange these letters to form a popular phrase: aosehrels...

It's not surprising that they have a rule like that. Probably meant to deter members who don't pay the fee to advertise their basses or amps for sale from getting around it by asking. You're not doing that, you're just asking about a product not even made yet, but I can see why they would look at it that way.

I sure would like to buy a copy, maybe two. One for me, one for the Guitars museum http://www.guitarsthemuseum.com/static/sv/80/ which shows the fantastic collection of guitars, basses, amps, and a lot of other stuff connected to the electric bass(!). I'd like to give your Gibson bass book to the twin brothers who owns the collection, because they are truly, and heartfully, interested in everything that's discussed in these corners.

My impression is that there's just as much anti-Fender sentiment by guys who think their boutique basses are far superior due to the fancy tops. A thin layer of diseased buckeye burl sounds so much better, you know. OTOH I haven't really looked around there in years unless somebody here links to a specific thread, so maybe my impression is wrong.

Basseros remains at war.
The Fender lords maintain supremecy of the realm, but their forces are divided. The long standing enmity between the Fender lords and virtually everyone else, including closely related but lesser Houses- Music Man and G & L. Their forces were first reduced in numbers by significant defections of banner men to the modern Squier lords on the promise of equal quality at a lower price. Fierce battles were fought, some still rage as territory is hotlly contested. The Squier defectors now claim superior quality.
It has now become more complex and fragmented since the start of the Sire rebellion. Almost daily battles rage, as people scramble to find new superlatives.

I'm expecting to receive the books from the offset printer this week.
And I have the website up and running. www.thegibsonbassbook.com
So you guys can place your orders ;-)

On december 13 the first official copy will be presented to none other than Rinus Gerritsen of Golden Earring (he recorded Radar Love with an B-3).
The book presentation will be held at Gibson Europe headquarters on the 10th floor of the A'dam tower.

Yeah, very cool. But I'am afraid it is not open to everyone. The entrance to the A'dam Tower has a lot of security.
So we're inviting a select audience.
But.. the good news is, I can allot a few extra tickets!

Tried again and it thought that I was stacking multiple books.

Hmm that sucks. The WooCommerce plugin has been a pain in the butt since I started the site...
The shopping cart remembers who you are. And when the order has not been completed the initial order remians.
You could try to delete the extra books that you added unintentionally. And then try to complete payment again.
Are you using Paypal?

BTW - "No, I don't care for Gibson" is not a palatable option in the survey. I do care for Gibson, but I'm not motivated to buy a book as I don't track Gibson's history or models.

Well, it's posted in the Gibson section of the forum, so it's assumed anyone interested enough to respond to the survey isn't going to say he doesn't care for Gibsons.

More elbow grease, Rob.

And I want to say this again:

I think you did and do a great job. You single handedly (with a tiny bit of help, here and there) made this book, without a publisher or distributor and I think you do more for awareness of Gibson basses than Gibson ever did themselves. After fifteen years on forums, reading and learning about basses, this book is here and I hope it creates a lot of awareness for and interest in Gibson basses. I think people at Gibson don't even know what they made in the past. I know a lot of Gibson people who don't. T\It's the future standard work for Gibson Basses! Paul D. Boyer made the Rickenbacker Book, James Whyte Black and Albert Molinaro made the Fender bass illustrated history.  The big three are complete. Steve Russell and Nick Wass made the 500/1 book. To end with my favourite subject, myself, I guess I have to start making the Warwick Bass Book now! ;)

I never let anything sign for me, so I  didn't realise some of you really want someone to scribble into a brandnew book!  8)
But I guess you're never too old to learn. I will stain the books from now on, if you insist, haha.

Hey, danke schön!

Edith and I will actually be coming to AMS - what time is the event? It's also a good chance to visit my son who studies there. And Edith wants to see AMS in Christmas time, she's a hopeless Christmas romantic. You guys have simply no idea how many times I have had - and will continue - to suffer through this:

Plus the look I get when I innocently ask: "Do we really have to watch this - again?"

I feel your pain, my wife recently decorated our house for christmas, or, as I use to say, "christmas threw up all over our living room".
As an act of resistance against this madness, I put this outside my mancave, but for some reason she didn't find it funny.

Uwe, Amsterdam can be quite busy but pretty in December. The pond at the Museumplein (Square between Rijksmuseum, van Gogh Museum and the Concertgebouw (Macca's Rock Show at the Concertgebouw lyrics)) is changed to an ice rink with a little bridge. I can always guide you around or give you some advice what to see but I guess Leon will know his way around.

Mine hasn't arrived but I am not concerned. Two/ three weeks is usual from Europe to my little part of Oz. I have a gig bag for my MB Fusion 500 still coming from UK, which left before the book. No worries. Let you know when the book arrives. All the best.

5-7 days to reach US shores  is probably reasonable, but it could easily take up to another week once they've arrived and passed customs, depending on where they're going. I'm not concerned.

Yesterday The Gibson Bass Book was officially presented at the Gibson showroom in the A'dam Tower, Amsterdam.
Uwe was there with his lovely wife Edith and his son Leon.
Chris was there.
Rinus Gerritsen was there.
And about 50 friends / familymembers.

An enjoyable evening!

It was!
It was so nice to have all those nice people together at such a beautiful location. Surrounded by lots of beautiful Gibson basses and guitars.
Rinus is a very nice guy. Incredibly funny and down to earth kinda person.
Floor and my good friend Mick sang and played beautifully.
Chris was a tremendous help and good master of ceremonies.

Just like a birthday party with lots of guest; you don't have the time to really talk to all the guests.
I would have loved to chat a bit longer with Uwe and Edith. But we just didn't get round to it.

I put a whole bunch of photographs up on the site. If you're interested check:

In the meanwhile I have found a few mistakes, that I just knew would pop up after the book had been printed.  :-[

for example:
- sixties t-bird necks are not nine ply
- epi EB-3 is not short scale of course

We check out magazine with three people and we always find some mistakes.... Always. No worries. We're all human. I think I found one or two too. That'sor the second edition! Will write mine down. Some small errors but it remains a great book!

I know it's upsetting, but if only two errors pop up in such a massive work, that's remarkable.

60ies Rev Birds are generally nine-ply. Only the first ones made in 1963 aren't.

Only 60ies Non-Revs are all not nine-ply.

But then you wouldn't want there to be no mistakes, how is the 2nd Edition gonna be even better then?!

I'm coming up for air, terribly busy right now, pre-Christmas workload plus both my father and my mother-in-law are in hospital at short notice - carotid artery narrowing (his darn smoking!) and colon issues/dehydration (why doesn't she ever drink enough!), respectively. :-\ It was lovely being invited by Rob, the book is more impressive than my collection, Floor sang great (and looked it too!) and, well, the bearded guy who nests with her played some nice bass on Fire & Water (he looked ok'ish ...), Chris Warwickhoer was there too (someone had allowed her in, security was obviously lacking) and did the introduction honors, Rinus Gerritsen is a lovely man, had great stories to tell and no one plays Radar Love like he did that night again on that EB-3, talk about elegant sloppiness! Rob has a brother who is neither a Thin Lizzy nor a Led Zep fan (that is why Rob never mentions him) - they're not all bad in that family then.

And I learned a whole lot about Dutch dialects and accents - Rinus Gerritsen's accent was easiest for me to understand, he sounded a lot like Rudi Carrell

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KzEOvyDcVas

which is easy on (and familiar to) German ears, but whenever Rob speaks Dutch, I'm totally lost!!! There should be a law to make them all speak like Rudi Carrell, really.  :)

Off to a hospital visit ...

Phew... that was a narrow escape then ;-)

Well he is a lawyer. Which is even worse. That's why I don't mention him.
And he is rather fond of Thin Lizzy. He even joined me on a pilgrimage to Dublin years ago where we visited Phil's grave and the White Horses house where his mother lives. About Led Zeppelin; At least my brother has an LP of LZ (and I don't). So I guess he likes them more than I do.
But the Rolling Stones are his favorites...

Hope your father and mother-in-law get well soon.

I've got a brother that practices law as well. I have a good friend who is an excellent guitar player and his twin is also a lawyer. Maybe there's some sibling dynamics at play which produce these combinations in families. Btw, waiting to see how things go after March 15th to pick up my copy of your book if it's still selling at 30 euros then.

And the Travis Bean short scale which was the live mainstay of his in the second half of the 1970s.  I think the EB-3 only lasted for the 1973 Pacific tour.  Of course, he then went full Steinberger in the 80s and 90s :-)

It arrived yesterday!11 days to reach the other side of the planet.not too bad. Great work Rob i love it,i'm going to read it lots of times.Loads of great photos and interesting information.
One thing that struck me was how many different types of pickups gibson made in house over the years, quite a few never returned to-kind of makes you wonder if they lost the plans for the sb400 single coils or the low z pickup  and a bunch of others?Lurking in some dusty corner is a filing cabinet full of the arcane secrets of vintage bass tone....

Great! I've spent a week with him last year. he's the most nice and pleasant guy and very humble. Maybe even too humble. He was teaching at the Warwick Bass Camp and I was his driver/PA. It was so nice to see a great and melodic rock player between all the slap/funk/jazz virtuosos. Both Neil and I were a bit shy and uncomfortable about our playing between all those guys (Jaco's son, etc). One of the highlights was to see Neil play some Whitesnake songs (I made sure I saw the concert and the rehearsals) with guys like Bon Jovi's Phil X. I love his playing and much nicer than the slapping brigade.

I had some brakfasts, diners and bus rides with him and it was cool to hear all his stories about the basses he had. He amazed me every time with new stories.

I'm impressed. Especially since I never saw him ever play a Gibson bass. Fender, Kramer, Aria Pro II, B.C. Rich and various boutique basses, yes.

His bass playing carried Fool for your Loving.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZdkQu3xEGg

With his bubbling bass lines, he is a bit of a hard rock Rocco Prestia, he plays a lot more rhythmic nuances than most bassists of the genre. Very much a finger player in that regard.

He told me he had an EB-3 pickup installed in several basses. Not sure if he meant the mudbucker or the mini-humbucker.

And he owned a Les Paul Bass way back in 1976. He told me he only recalls using it during an encore with Colosseum during a gig at the Marquee.
He didn't feel comfortable with switching between long scale and short scale during a gig. So he sold it.

What is that Stratocaster bass by the way?

I can only take so much of Coverdale licking his lips, But I always liked the Strat Bass in that video. I saw it for sale a couple years ago and was briefly temped.

Great book Rob. I really like the graphics work. Like the way the small image of a T-bird casts a little shadow on the larger image behind it. Very well done. I'm still in the 60s, but I expect the rest to be of equal quality!

I was at Chicago Music Exchange the other day, and they have a great selection of vintage Gibsons in stock. I plan to contact Marc over there and let him know about your book. Would be a great resource for them, and maybe they could sell some?

Last week I did an interview via Skype with Raul Amador of Bass Musician Magazine, to talk about The Gibson Bass Book.
That was a new experience for me, as I've never Skyped before and I'm certainly not used to doing interviews (in English).
But Raul did a great job editing the video with some images of Gibson bass guitars that are mentioned during the interview.
I probably should have said some things differently, or maybe I shouldn't have said them at all ;-)
But all in all I'm excited about the interview being online!

Actually, those "Bullit" basses - that is what they were called, right? - weren't so bad at all, that pup - whatever it was and it can't have been much - made for a nice nasty punk sound.

Haha, yeah that was a weird experience. I had seen it on their website. But when I got there nobody knew where it was. They had totally forgotten about it.
They searched the entire store (a very small one) plus their storage room but couldn't find it. We had to walk two blocks to their other store, which was closed that day. They searched that entire shop too. And eventually they found the bass between the buckets and the brooms...

Lovely interview, Holländer! And vielen Dank for the copious name dropping - my 1.5 minutes of fame as Andy W. predicted.

It's great to see this book catch so much attention, probably the most successful marketing campaign Gibson basses ever enjoyed. You should actually send Henry J. a free copy - and I'm not joking!

As a matter of fact I gave the guys at Gibson Amsterdam a bunch of books. They would see to it the books were going to Nashville and Memphis.
And one of the names they said they would send one was Henry J's son. Who is also a big shot at Gibson.

Vintage Guitar Magazine asked me to send them a promotional video for their website. But how does one make a video of a book?

My friend Guido van Gerven (Duplo Studio) made an animation of the book flipping through the pages by itself.
I made a lead-in and lead-out. Plus a loop of a Definition Of Madmen song (played on a Gibson basss of course)

Et voilá!

Nice break Rob! They've been around forever............

That sort of made me wonder what ever happened to JK Lutherie. John Kinnemeyer was always the best source of guitar related books. For many years he took out a full page add on the back page of the VG. Books & original guitar literature seemed to be his biggest passion. He also found me the telescoping end pin for my first EB-1, along with many other rare parts.

Yup! Still at it! I use to visit his booth at some of the Chicago guitar shows I would try to hit back in the day. Nice guy......... The pearloid plastic tuning knobs on my '59 EB-2 were shrinking, (shrinking knob problems are common as things age  :o). I bought (4) original firebird tuners from John to get the nickel tuning knobs off of them. No more shrinking knob problems for this guy!
