I saw a post elsewhere today reminding us that we lost Chris Squire a year ago yesterday, the 27th of June. I'm surprised that a year has now past, and also lost sight slightly given the number of musicians the last year has robbed us of. I saw somebody suggest that we should 'turn 2016 off for ten seconds and turn it back on again' given how this year is panning out.
Something I started a wee while back was the idea to remix Heart of the Sunrise with Chris and Bill higher in the mix, Steve way lower and the vocals and keys kept at a middling level. From memory Youtube sets a 10 minute limit unless you are some sort of power uploader, so I also had to cut the song down a bit to make it fit. Whilst I was doing all of this I selectively muted some parts of various tracks to allow a bit of a 'cutaway' view of how the song is made. In the end it is part wonky dub mix, part anatomy class, part bass lecture and part tribute to Christopher Russell Edward Squire.

Interesting but sad coincidence. Do you realize that RIC made three "Limited Edition" basses (sometimes called Signature Edition): 4001CS Chris Squire, 2030GF Glenn Frey, and the 4004LK Lemmy Kilmister - an all three passed within seven months. In a weird way, I'm glad they didn't do a real Paul McCartney or Geddy Lee edition. :o

Off topic now, but I was having a look at Jon Camp's bass in your book, Paul. From memory you mention that you don't know if he performed the modifications (Dimarzio Model P on a modified bridge plate and the black headstock) himself. There is clips of Jon backing up Roy Wood in the '80s, and the bass has the mods there.
I do find it quite strange that Camp went from the twiddly music of Renaissance to Roy Wood's stuff and then ended up in the Groundhogs.

I have to agree with Chris. I've picked up a few books about fairly niche things over the years, including some rarer bass types. None have been as professionally produced, as complete or as enjoyable to read as Paul's. ;)
Some have been downright disappointing. >:(

Wow, hadn't realized that, and yes, I was kind of thinking someone should check on Geddy! ;)
I made a custom decal for my FenderBird headstock. Should have made it bigger, but I didn't have a real Fender to compare with at the time.

4001, Badass 1, Grover Titan tuners (or maybe Schaller M4S?)
This is Ric #2. His first one had the 1/2'' pickup spacing and white plastic around the bridge.

From what I can see in photos, it looks like Titans.

How many Rickenbackers did Geddy have? I've seen somebody mention they went to a Rush gig in the '70s and saw a fair squadron of identical Jetglo 4001 basses in the wings. It seems from what is posted here that he had at least two, two doublenecks, a 3001 and the P bass he chopped into a teardrop.

Geddy also owns a 4002 and a 3261 (Rose Morris model number for a 4005 with traditional f-holes).

Long before Geddy bought it. Back in August 2006 at the Rickenbacker 75th Anniversary weekend. :)

Yeah, I got to handle it also at that event. Didn't play it, but set it up for the photo on p. 41. It belonged to collector Gary Clauson then. It's the only 3261 I've ever seen.

No way of knowing how many were made. RIC may have RM sales records somewhere deep in the piles, but I would guess even they would have trouble finding them.
