Title: NR II on eBay
Post by: Denis on March 19, 2016, 07:11:03 PM
Looks nice, though it's a strange color.
Not sure if it had a neck break but you can see the joint. Looks too even to be a break.

Yes, strange color.

Tuning machines and truss rod cover look like later replacements. Tailpiece is obviously not original.

Good eye on the B&Ch tailpiece, p/g also looks like a replacement because it hasn't shrunk and the bird looks like a decal (yellowey insides). Cavity cover may be a replacement, missing a screw at the least.

Could it be just yellowed white, but looking green-ish because of lighting?

Not so sure it's a BaCH tailpiece. BaCH tailpieces are chrome. This one looks less shiney and less blueish. It looks like it may be nickel. Greco Tbirds have nickel rectangular tailpieces. The bridge posts on this lime green NR II look chrome, while the bridge looks like it has the correct nickel plating.
I think you are right about the decal birdlogo, Carlo.

This bass was put together from parts. Wonder what shape control cavity lurks under the non original control cover.

Yeah, I thought the bird on the pickguard looked suspect with being shaded darker -- though I don't know the non-reverses as well as the '60s reverse models.

Not sure of the source on the tailpiece but I do know I've never seen an original '60s bird with one like that! (Maybe a Bach one that someone corroded to take the chrome edge off of?)

The bridge/mute plate is the only thing that makes me hesitate in dismissing the whole thing as bogus.

I would assume the headstock had been broken at some point, and it looks like the re-fin didn't completely hide the repair.

Yep. You can see traces of the break (not too bad as they go). Serial number is gone and those are certainly lnot original tuning machines.

Reliced Gotohs, not sure if they're Resolites.

No, Res-o-lites have the name stamped into the gear wheel.

Yep.  And the extra pin on the shaft.  I have a set of those NR Gotohs on a MIJ '62 Fender RI Jazz.

Those are great tuners. Stable and smooth.
And the res-o-lites help cure the neckdive.

This bass is like Cher. The husk is there but I'd be surprised if much else is original.

Touché.

Though I almost wonder if even that much is original. I pity the person who pays $5K+ and then learns the details after the fact.

You could be right. So much is obviously non-original without being disclosed, it could easily be a quality Japanese copy. Seller has 100% feedback, maybe he doesn't know NR Birds.
