Unlike that other band whose name escapes me now, but they had this purloined novelty hit with what sounded like a bee swarm going from side to side, the Purps never (got) photographed that well.

Don Airey, that's who. Does the Don mean he's a mob boss? That would explain how he has enough bravado to step in for Lord.
Don Airey, ex-Cozy Powell's Hammer, ex-Colosseum II, ex-Black Sabbath (he's all over Never Say Die), ex-Rainbow, ex-Ozzy Osbourne (the Mr Crowley intro is his composition, uncredited), ex-Gary Moore, ex-Whitesnake (he's all over 1987) ...
Since 2002!
Here's the handover, around 4:28,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8NNbl7o9UKE
Jon appeared at this final concert when Don Airey had already joined permanently (after standing in for Jon after the latter's knee surgery) and since then only appeared at two or three DP gigs on stage for the odd encore or such.
And, incidentally, Jon, a habitual latecomer during his life (but reliable in the long term) is now indeed late, Mark, and has been for three years! They just commemorated him in Leicester where he was born.

Airey is an excellent player and technically more adept than Jon, good songwriter and arranger too, he doesn't have his rhythmic swagger though, Jon wasn't so much the Ritchie Blackmore of the Hammond C3 as he was the Keith Richards.

I did know Lord had passed away, I really haven't cared as much since Glover, then RB left the band, Jon's passing makes it more difficult yet.
But ole Glove is back since 31 years now!
Jon Lord was Deep Purple. Not to minimize all the other players and line ups but the one constant signature sound in the group was Jon. Airey is plenty competent but Lord had the soul.

I had a Pete Frame family tree of Deep Purple that came with a greatest hits album I think from around 1985, kind of like this one: http://familyofrock.net/deep-purple-roots-and-branches-1963-1979/ (http://familyofrock.net/deep-purple-roots-and-branches-1963-1979/)
But my mom threw it away! :o
I think the most recent album Now What?! is great! Love the new logo - Deep ?urp!e - Don Airey sounds great, some of the songs are really really good - it really sounds to me like Deep ?urp!e at their best, I would put it on a par with Perfect Strangers. I saw that tour, at Budokan no less! Would love to see the current version.

No Rainbow on that family tree?
Rob: With no less than four vocalists, six bassists (counting Mark Clarke in who recorded but was wiped and replaced by Daisley or Blackmore himself playing bass), six keyboarders and five drummers, Rainbow has its own Peter Frame family tree (no joke)! Only the lead guitarist stayed the same. Blackmore played a high price for his hire-and-fire policy - through all its eras, Rainbow always remained a two-dimensional affair, pallid compared to Deep Purple. He doesn't realize it, but Blackmore is only second-rate when he can have everything his way. Though he gets easily bored with it.
Ah, just like Whitesnake you mean? They even got two branches in that tree. ;)
Well, I managed to make it through the 8 AM hour of Today only to hear DP play Smoke On The Water. How predictable! That's what most Americans know them for, though, and the crowds on the plaza were happy. Maybe they'll air another number during the 10 AM hour but for that you have to endure the obnoxious Kathie Lee Gifford.

Whitesnake, in its early incarnation, was a collaborative band and a real unit. I prefer(red) them to Rainbow most of the time. No Rainbow drummer ever stood a chance against Ian Paice.
i saw the feeble attempt at smoke on the water as well. sad, really. if they had played anything else... :o
That song is both a blessing and a millstone for them.

A leisurely version, but well-performed (people tend to have the Made in Japan version in their ears which was a little on the frantic side). Of course, with Morse's Yank groove (I don't mean that negatively), the riff is never gonna sound as persistent, clipped and staccato as it did with Blackmore's stiffer, more Transylvanian original riffing.
Steve has hand issues again, look at the glove of his picking hand, he still rehearses too much.
Of course, Ian Gillan just had to make a mention of a stripper in family TV! 8)
They could have confounded everyone with this version here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BLUusW_P7II
It's not only the way he plays the riff. I think Morse's sound has (way) too much gain. Blackmore's sound is much cleaner and has better tone.
Was flipping channels and I saw them on Today. Pretty respectable rendition, I thought.
Ah... minutiae...

Only four Maybe seven vocalists, live and six in the studio, three at least five lead guitarists, live, three at least four bassists, live, two keyboarders and one drummer so far!!!
Chas Hodges depped for sick Glover once, iirc...
California depped for a sick RB for one gig in '72, notable for the first live performance of When A Blind Man Cries... possible a transient as it was just a single gig...
Satriani played for a tour and was offered the gig, pre Morse...
I could quibble over vocalists as Glover depped for a sick Gillan once, and both Hughes and Bolin had their own moments...
I knew someone was gonna nitpick!!!

I know! :-\ Morse has that highly processed and compressed Guitar Institute of Technology "modern" sound. By contrast, Blackmore was a stoneage purist: amp, treble booster and his Revox as echo, a litte wah-wah, some phasing/flanging on ballad type stuff (an octaver would creep in later Rainbow years or something that sounded a lot like it). And of course Morse plays a Gibson scale EB MM Signature model which never in a million years is gonna sound like a Strat. But I grant Morse the right not to have to ape Blackmore's sound - if Purple had wanted that, they could have gone for Yngwie who was sleeping with the window open (and a white Strat at his side) at night to hear/heed the call that never came from the Purple camp when Blackmore left in 93. Let's face it: Morse can play circles around Blackmore (and most other guitarists) and is versatile as hell; Blackmore is not exactly a one-trick-pony, but a multi-trick stallion, yet far from true versatility (not so much because of his fingers, but because of his mind and determination).
Bolin's style of playing was nothing like Blackmore's either. He had much more distortion, played Gibsons often enough, was experiments-happy in a naive-endearing way plus that whole army of effects. Add his own idiosyncratic groove and phrasing, just listen here at 10:41:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lTHvFu9DWw0
That is not Smoke on the Water as we know it, but I liked the Boulder kid's more playful groove nonetheless. Ritchie always sounded (and incidentally looked) like Professor Snape when he played it.

Purple never ever replaced anyone of their departing members with someone who sounded remotely like his predecessor - it's one of those things I like about them, they never even tried to emulate, but did something different, relying on their "overloud Hammond"-driven sonic behemoth core sound as a foundation and building things from there.
Quote from: uwe on July 24, 2015, 05:24:14 AM

I can see why you put it between accolades. His sound is very eighties. Sounds hopelessly outdated to my ears.
By no means as timeless as Blackmore's sound.
Lukather, Morse, Van Halen, Petrucci, Satriani, Vai ... they are all guilty in that respect (everyone of them a formidable player though). And it's no coincidence that they are all yanks - Blackmore's sound is "British School" as was Rory Gallagher's or is David Gilmour's or Mark Knopfler's. In my ears, Blackmore's sound bears more in common with Mark Knopfler's Hank Marvinisms than, say, with Eddie van Halen's (himself a great Blackmore fan).
As a bassist, that overtly processed sound so many guitarists strive for would drive me nuts. Plus their dependency on it - they are all addicts with their "But I really need my amp!!!"-whining. Despicable. That is why I consider the bass the more "honest" and "pure" instrument. In the rehearsal room I now have three rigs (Ampeg SVT with 8x10" and 1x18", Orange Little Terror with 4x12" (double cones) and Markbass with 1x15 and 2x10, I switch between them wantonly) and though they all sound vastly different, I caught myself yesterday (with my back to the amps) in believing I was playing the Ampeg or the Orange when I was in fact playing the Markbass. I smiled to myself and thought "that is a good thing".
Great, i love DP, what line up do they play with, MK MMCMVII or MMCMVIII? ;D
I believe we're at Mk VIII!
Mk I - Evans/Simper line up, it's 1968, Deep Purple are a band manufactured by three business men, hand-picked players with an excellent gigging reputation, but so far no commercial success
Mk II - the other three decide that Evans and Simper are not cutting it, Rod Stewart is not considered good enough to be their Robert Plant, Glover/Gillan line up, the golden era ...
Mk III - Gillan has had enough, Blackmore wants a new, more aggressive bass player (a decision he will regret), Paul Rodgers refuses an offer, John Lawton misses an audition, Hughes/Coverdale line up
Mk IV - Blackers hands in his notice to go over the Rainbow, Bolin blinds everyone at an audition he really doesn't want to go to and introduces DP to the fallacies of heroin addiction, Purple eventually split in early 1976
- Mk II reunion in 1984 (Mark 2.2) -
Mk V - Gillan decides he cannot compare to Joelene who, alora!, comes from over
the Rainbow New Joisie after DP's first choice - Survivor's Jimi Jamison - isn't allowed to join by his (Italian) management ...
Mk VI - Gillan is begged to return by everyone except Blackmore, technically it's Mk II again (or Mark 2.3), but Blackers throws a tantrum before the planned Japan tour, Satriani - another Italian - helps out, recommended by Mr Udo, their Japanese promoter ...
Mk VII - Satriani returns to his solo career, Morse's devoted vegetarian question whether he will have to wear leather on stage is answered in the negative, after a few test gigs in Mexico and South Korea he joins
Mk VIII - Lord is tired of touring and wants to devote time to other music, but the band doesn't want to slow down, Don Airey gets a call ...

I think this is one yank that gets the Blackmore approach.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pr4EEsiR_Ao
Bonamassa has a Blackmore influence, no doubt about it. And I have always preferred Brad Whitford's terse style to Joe Perry's - Joe is just better-looking and more of a showman, but a lot of his solos are played with an afterthought attittude.
The Metallica version of When a Blind Man Cries on that tribute is excellent too and Kirk Hammett is a very un-American sounding guitarist as well - I always consider him underrated, I know there are a lot of people here who can't stand Hetfield's voice, but I think his plaintive whine/wail goes well with the song, bum notes on the unplugged version and all:

Mark, I didn't call because it was kind of a quick trip for a family wedding and I had the whole family to keep up with. It would have been great to see you, but the timing didn't work. I'm over in Pullman now, having stocked up on Cougar gear for display in Colorado and spent some time with my wife's dad, who unfortunately isn't doing very well.
I was even within 100 yards of Bass NW and didn't get to check in. Dang.
I'll post some photos soon - working without a good way to transfer from Facebook. We did take the family to the Chihuly exhibit...mind-blowing, and I got many photos. (I think of him as Gilhooley, since I have seen Donovan's Reef too many times...)
Heading back to Denver Friday and will check in when I return. We're staying at the family farm in Colfax, 7 miles from town in a 1000-foot deep canyon and there is no cell service or Internet connection there. I borrowed a friend's computer in Pullman to check in.
We had good friends in Colfax - nice memories there.

Just like people say - everything ends in Ritchie Blackmore here.
Nice Pumps Uwe! ;)
I find the baby blue socks an acquired taste.

Not good on me, tho they would cover up my Wylie Coyote feets :P
Meep! Meep!
Get back to studying your "Classic WWII Aircraft Silhouettes"-book, will ya?!
I'll leave you love(T)birds to it...
You wordsmith!

They're Heinkels!
Here's yer "nice aircraft silhouette"...

This is now all turning very Freudian my Über-Ich tells me. And he was never a pilot though he steered us through our innermost thoughts, feelings and instincts.

They're Heinkels!
Only if they navigate along the Thames, Ken. That darn left-lane-traffic got us confüsed easily.

You can blame those Heinkels for the O2...!
... and for that matter, is it coincidental you've picked on Canary Wharf for the central part of that image...?!?!
An Al, they should have had her the other way round as that tail will create an awful lot of drag... :o
my dad has a photo scrapbook of painted bomber noses that he took during ww2. most look like they were in the pacific judgeing by the landscape. as a communications guy i know he was all over the place. okinawa and iwo jima were two that i am sure about.

If things had gone
well badly that would now be the Adolf-Hitler-Arena ...
Canary Wharf getting on that pic just shows how entrenched I am with Clifford Chance - I've been with that firm (and its predecessors) for close to 30 years now. Any personal consultant would despair at the sight of my CV. ;D
Two schools of thought there re CV and other's perspectives...
A) Why'd he leave...?
B) Loyal employee...
Longest I've ever been in a job is 7 years...
Personal consultants would look at my CV and say: "OMG, a lifer!"
You say that like it's a bad thing...which I guess it might be in today's compulsively mobile workforce.
However, no doubt at this point Uwe is the "sage and wise old bear" of the company.
Me? 35 years in higher ed: 5 years at Washington State, 13 at Texas A&M, 17 and counting at Colorado State. I wonder how Dr. Bassman's resume compares...?
Think I'm 20 years in the same chair at this point...current company merged with old company, so I add them both together
6 years aviation, 2 years music (read non-earning), 21 years catering and laundry equip, 11 years security eng.
33 years of road based work with a mileage in excess of 1,000,000 - as Uwe mentioned, a "lifer" - my view of driving round London (read any large city or its enviorns) is you get less for murder... :vader:
Left school 40 years back now... where did it go...?
i retired at 57.
Ah, I may be joining you circa the same age... ;)
I wish...I'm 58 and have at least another ten to go.
I'm 2 behind you but it all depends on what you call "work", and I'm keepin' 'em crossed for a wee bit longer...

By then, you had enjoyed as much as you can stand, eh? ;)
Good fer you!
I actually turned 65 in June but I had the chance to add on supervision of a second technology unit on campus, so I upped for a couple of additional years. Looked interesting and I'll be able to help set the direction of teaching technology for a campus of 30,000.
This thread is like a cryptic history lesson.
I'm going to need to read it more than once to pick up on all of the details.
It's like beat poetry...just go with the flow.

That would be the Cap'n Hook signature model with a hook replacing the top strap button?
Indeed, Mr Smee... all musicians love a hook-line...
Something to get they're teeth into... :vader:

NEVER has a reply positioned a graphic better. My compliments to the Cap'n.
