Title: I'm jacked. Short gig Begins in 4 hours!
Post by: Pilgrim on June 28, 2014, 02:49:34 PM
My band hasn't played out for a year, since one of our members got a gig on an oil exploration ship which put him in town for a month, then out of town for a month. That plays hell with rehearsals, so we basically played basement band until his job ended a couple of months ago.

The lead guitarist is married to a real estate agent whose company is having a party at the local city pool (big area) and asked if we could play - so we're doing it!  It gave us a great chance to work toward something, and we've come together faster because of it. We even had a new sax player jam with us on our last practice, and I think he'll end up joining us.  I like what a sax adds to a band...and he can double on keyboards a bit, too.

Here's tonight's set; we'll just play one, for a a bit more than an hour:

Money
Fortunate Son
Soul Man
Sunshine of your Love
Jenny-Jenny (867-5309)
Pipeline
Wild Nights
High Heel Sneakers
LaGrange
Balinese
Statesboro Blues
Get A Haircut
Ohio > Rockin the Free World
Sweet Home Chicago
Pretty Woman
Giving' it up for your love
Brooklyn Slide
Cheap Sunglasses

And our logo:

As you may recall, Vintage Winds is code for "Old Farts".

I actually like that set list.  Seriously.  I've never been in a band with a sax, but it sounds like fun.

Glad to say that it went well.  May be able to get a picture or two posted later.  One nice aspect is that the shade hit our position just before we played, dropping the temp to a comfortable level!

I also learned that a Genz Shuttle 6.2 with a 12" combo speaker and a 2x10 cab is total overkill for 50W guitar amps.  I had to keep the volume at 25% on the master and be careful with gain from the Gretsch 6128B Thunderjet.

I do think that Thunderjet is my go-to bass from now on.  I like the scale, it's not too heavy (but not light) and has a beautiful sound.

I love it when we have a sax player along too.  Adds so much live to any songs that originally had sax on the record.

It's way up there on my wish list.  I have to keep the list short to be realistic, but it is on there.

Not only does it look great, everything on it is placed right. The neck pickup is actually at the neck, which you don't see too often on basses any more (the SG Standard being an exception), the bridge is well away from the butt end and the controls are past the bridge.

I like it a lot.  A little pricey, but that's to be expected.

Glad it went well.  My Thunderjet is my main bass these days.  Such an easy player and great tone.

There's not a lot of discussion about Gretsch other than on specialty Gretsch forums, but I have to admit that all the Gretsch basses I have played, I really liked.  Even the ones made in Korea and China have exhibited great workmanship, and the pickups sound excellent to me.  My backup bass is usually my Bronco with a Gretsch 2202 pickup in it.
