I've seen a few stories about it. This video aired on NBC Nightly News a couple of days ago and includes the first Mustang sold in the US, restored and still being driven by the original owner and her husband.

Long live the Falcon II
And the Grabber Blue!
I always liked Mustangs, even the pumped up ones from the nineties. Not quite as elegant as a Corvette (but not as hilarious porn as a Dodge Viper), but with - in Germany at least -, less of a pimp car millstone round its neck (Corvettes have a pimp car image in Germany, but one of my tax partners drives one too). Mustang is more a working man's muscle car. When I still lived in Frankfurt, our neighbor (who headed famous German hardcore hard rockers/punx Böhse Onkelz) had one which i would have dated late sixties/early seventies. It had a nice engine roar and that engine bubbled nicely when he took the foot of the gas.
corvettes are also known as redneck porches. i tend to agree.
The Mustang was never intended to be in league with Vettes and Vipers. It was described by Lee Iaccoca as "a secretaries car". It was a fun little 4 seater that just about anyone could afford, but it could also be optioned out to be a badass at the track. I always get a kick out of people who rip on the Mustang II, when in fact, that car had more of the spirit of the originals than the Torino based 71-73 behemoths that directly preceded it. I've told this story before, but... my dad was a mechanic. Worked at Ford dealerships. It wasn't uncommon for him to come home for the night in a customer's car for a final test drive. One day when I was about 7 or 8, it was a Acapulco blue, '68 GT convertible with a big block 390. Only this time, he handed me a screwdriver and a pair of license plates. It was my mom's birthday present! Good times. Love those cars.
Sadly, this is the only photo I have.

And my current ride (with a friend's bass).

Beautiful pair. Too bad the bass isn't yours too.
I like Mustangs and Camaro's of that period. But a tad more passionate about the Mopars:

Got a soft spot in my heart for the old Mopars myself 8)

I have to say that while I grew up around GM cars, one of my favorite cars (among 50+ in a lifetime) was my '67 Belvedere. Mine wasn't the GTX version, though.

My buddy had a '69 Road Runner...my pick was a 1966 GTO...Barrier Blue like this one except red pinstripes on the fenders. None but the stoutest Mustangs could pick on a goat.
