Curt at Hog just called and is shipping my Sunburst NR today! One of the first bursts in the country!
Cool! I didn't know they had them in yet!

Kurt called me too, mine's in too!
The excitement is strong with this one!
I spoke with Curt last week who told me that Gibson had only shipped two bursts up to that point: all the others were Pelham Blue. He said the blue ones seemed to be more popular so it makes me wonder if Gibson split them 50/50 or whether most are blue.

That might just be HOG ordering based on their own sales experience with other Gibsons (including guitars).
I just got an e-mail from Key Music, Belgium (who I have my order with and also a guy called Kurt). He's said that Gibson are discontinuing these models as soon as orders have been fulfilled. Thomann have already said the model(s) have been discontinued. Get one while you can kids! :)

Haha, now I want two...

I've been thinking about ordering one with Key Music too, did you have to pay in advance (or just a part)?
I picked up the burst NR at the HOG and she's a beauty. The action on this thing is increadible, too. Pics tonight when I get home from work!
They are going to stop making them as soon as orders are filled? Doesn't make any sense until they see how sales are going to go, I would think.

I paid in full on a credit card. I'd never heard of Key until very recently, but I posted on a UK bass group and the reports were positive, so I just went for it.

I'm looking forward to the pics.
Concerning the discontinuation of the model, the more I wonder what the skinny is at Gibson. I guess basses/guitars come and go and if they're tooled up for doing 500 or a 1,000, then that's all they'll do.

Here she is. She sounds great! The neck isn't bad at all, I'll have to work a little to navigate with my short fingers! On the back of the neck, it says "2013 Model" as well as Made in USA. Interesting. The action from the factory is fantastic and I need not describe the pups, they are super (minus some needed chrome). The finish is excellent, again! I am surprised at the quality. The grain is beautiful. I really like it!
Speaking of chrome. I have everything I need to convert this baby to a full chromium glory. What do ya think?

Drat, none of your photos are showing up!
Very cool! I think I'll re-site the lower knob and put a Supertone on mine. Possibly a six week wait here :(

Working beautifully now...
some nice grain showing there.
Wow ! Bill very nice :) I like the TB sunburst. I took mine to rehearsal last night, sounded great dare I say like a 60's NR but a little cleaner. I use only the neck pup, not boomy at all it cut right through. Just like it is unplugged the notes sing on this bass, I think set neck and a slab mahogany body are the formula for sustain imho of course.
Nice grain there, Bill.
Maybe this was planned as one of the limited runs. If it was, they could always do another run if there were demand. There's excitement about them here, but we don't know yet how it's going overall.
Not that you wouldn't expect it from me.........
Chrome it out, Good Doctor ;)
And ze Khröme Wärs kontinue ...
I like it. As is.
Bill, that is one beautiful bass! Fedex tracking says mine is in Durham, about 20 miles away so it should be waiting when I get home.
The smaller headstock makes the neck at the nut look really thick!

I know, I know! If I get busy (or lazy), it might take awhile to get around to it!

Yeah, it's an optical illusion. The neck isn't bad at all. Not a big as my Ric 4003. Enjoy it! Mine's going to practice this week.

The black looks better on the burst than the blue, that's for sure. The black on blue seems really 80s.
The back of the Explorer headstock says MADE IN USA 2012, but no "MODEL". Maybe because of the limited space?
Bill, both the Midtown & the NR look amazing! Granted they are different beasts, but if you had to choose one over which one would you lean towards?
Anything with an F-hole is multi-purpose really.

You are really pushing my buttons with these comments ;)
Two F-holes actually, let's be accurate.
Tease! ;D

I agree. The blue is screaming for chrome, and I'm not a devout chromologist. ;D
Something abut the tobacco sunburst, understated and subdued ...................... I love it. I think the black hardware looks better with this finish than the Pelham Blue.
Now, now, now, Scott, don't get all relativist and soft with age!
I hate hardware liberals.
I think black is OK on this bass and best on the white TB I have. I am still leaning toward chrome hardware.
Soft with age? you must have me confused with someone else. They call me Rock , Rock Hard ;D

Here are some new, natural light shots of my NR.........still beautiful. I gotta give Gibson credit for wood selection and finishing. Well done.

Beautiful! I called Curt yesterday to tell him I was more than pleased with the NR and he mentioned the Gibson rep was in the store with him at the time. The rep was taking an NR home with him!
I asked Curt to ask the rep how many of these NRs Gibson was building. He said he didn't know for sure but that this first run was composted of 400 total. He also said it was likely that your burst and mine were two of the very first ones out the door.
Nice basses. Gibson did a very nice job.
