Post by: warriorbass05 on May 24, 2012, 06:04:22 PM
Did anyone here grab one of the reissue Rippers that Gibby put out sometime back? I have yet to see one in the flesh..Grabber is another story but Ripper???

While I found the Ripper II lovingly done I thought the Grabber II a odd kettle of fish. Set neck (wtf?) flat black finish and a chrome pup that looked tacked on. I also thought the price rather high considering what vintage Grabbers were going for at the time. From a collectors stand point the G II might be worth something someday. I think you are far better off with a vintage Grabber. I got lucky mine only cost me $450  ;D but that was a few years ago.(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v102/godofthunder59/100_2214.jpg)

^ +1 on on a real vintage Grabber.  My G3 is my (at this moment in time) most important bass.

My Grabber is now getting a much needed refin...(time to remove the housepaint someone applied to it...)
It was actually neon pink underneath the housepaint(?!??!?) I have pics...kinda entertaining...

Sonically, the Grabber II creams the old Grabber into the ground, more bottom, more presence, midrange less cheap and nasty, fuller, better sustain. A take no prisoners rock bass with more substance than the old Grabbers ever had.

The Ripper II otoh is kind of the hifi version of the old Ripper - without being sterile. Clear, single-coilish presence without being clanky, full bass, midrange not as gung ho as on the Grabber II, more well behaved or sophisticated.
