Title: LE Cherry Thunderbird IV
Post by: finlover on May 24, 2012, 05:29:03 AM
Hi, Everyone!

I've been lurking here since I got my 'bird a couple months ago and thought I'd introduce myself.  As a longtime Jazz Bass player I was shocked when I picked up a T-bird for the first time and fell completely in love with its sound, playability and of course its looks!  Why hadn't I ever even considered one before?  I guess it was the slightly higher price compared to a US Fender and the notion that they were strictly rock basses meant to be played with a pick (I play mostly vintage country, fingerstyle with flats).  I even work at a music store that carried Gibson at one time and I don't remember us stocking many T-birds, maybe a black or sunburst one here and there.  I don't recall ever plugging one in.  What a mistake--I could've gotten a sweet employee discount!

No other bass I've played feels like an extension of me like the Thunderbird does.  The high output, instant attack and incredible sustain make for one amazing instrument!  Plus mine weighs just under 8 lbs. and there's none of the dreaded neck dive.  The workmanship on mine is top notch except for a little orange peel where the body wings meet the raised center part which I guess is pretty common.  I was able to improve it somewhat with some 2000 grit sandpaper and Meguire's products.  Uwe and Scott, I think you both own one of these--how was the finish on yours?

I've never been a black hardware guy but with this color I think it works.  The pickups are undeniably ugly but they sound so sweet I can live with them.  My fretboard doesn't have much grain to it but the inlays and fretwork are nicely done.  I still don't know if mine is preciosa or baked maple as the Gibson website says.  I wonder if there's some way to tell?

Anyway, thanks for all the great information and the entertaining posts--I look forward to participating!
My apologies to those who have seen these photos before on TB.

Welcome Finlover! You came to the (only) right place to discuss Thunderbirds and all things Gibson bass!

Now tell us about that amazing Oldsmobile!

Don't worry we're used to topics "meander" somewhat.
As you may have noticed they all end up in the big black hole of WWII aircaft, scale models and sodomy

Hmmm...big black hole and sodomy...Mark won't be able to leave THAT one alone! ;D

Thanks for the warm welcome!  I feel like I know you guys from reading all 82 pages of old posts.

The Olds is a '59 Dynamic 88, which was the bottom of the line though mine is well-optioned.  the color is original to the car and is called Burgundy Mist, which is where Fender got it's custom color.  It has a 371 V8 with the optional 4 barrel carb, an automatic transmission, and power steering and brakes (thank goodness).  I've had so much fun with this car since I bought it in a lot rougher shape back in '91.  It's even been in a couple of movies including "Secondhand Lions" with Robert Duvall and Michael Caine.

Thanks, Nokturnal!!  I'm happy to be here!

Now that I have one, it's a mystery to me why Thunderbirds aren't more popular than they seem to be.  I guess compared to most basses the design IS pretty radical (even after 49 years!), Gibson QC isn't the best and the marketing isn't that strong.  Oh well, that just makes them more exclusive I suppose.

In my opinion T-birds have the coolest headstock in the business: the way it resembles an eagle's beak in profile and is outlined in the body color.  Also the way it points away from the body horn gives the assymetrical design aesthetic balance.  I never get tired of looking at it!

The only thing better than the T-Bird headstock is the old Epiphone batwing headstock from an Embassy or Newport.   8)

BTW - Secondhand Lions is a great movie. I'll have to look for your car next time I watch it.

Hi Greg!

Nice to have you here at our little bastion of (in) sanity!
Hope you like cars, WWII aircraft, electric trains, and yes occasionally we discuss 'the love that dare not speak it's name"  ;)
The Oldsmobile and T Bird are beautiful as ever, just reminds me to shoot some new pics this Summer.

Right you are, sir!  Headstocks so often seem like afterthoughts, but the batwing's a great one.

Here's a clip from the movie.  My car appears at around 4:06

I got to watch them film that scene (over and over).  It was great fun and I got to eat the catered lunch they had for the actors, which was awesome!  The best part was that it paid $800!

Can't wait for new pics of your amazing collection!  They're all beauties, but the purple's my fave.

Ahhh....Well,  many fine gentleman and I on this forum go back a few years to a place called "The Dudepit" which had a great Gibson bass forum - I first inflicted my strangeness upon them there, they, in turn were great sports about it and along the way have shared their knowledge, friendship and a great "Kommerad" that you don't often find.  You are amongst very fine people here, I'm happy you' re joining us - Welcome.

It's Denver Pyle as Briscoe Darling from the Darling family appearances on Andy Griffith. With The Dillards as the rest of the band and Maggie Peterson as Charlene.

BTW, banjo player Doug Dillard passed away last week.

Thanks, Baz!!  The name of the band is 3 Chord Rodeo and we do country mostly from the '60s--George Jones, Merle Haggard, Marty Robbins, etc.  I trade lead vocals with Kerry (the pretty one) and Gary (the guy with the Ovation), who has a Waylon-esque voice.  Believe it or not, Kerry is 60 years old and even prettier in person!  They're all great people and I love playing with them.

Nice Olds, Finlover! Does the '59 have that wacky column shifter where Reverse is normally where you would find "L" or "1"? The repair shop I worked at back in the 80s had a '62 Dynamic 88 with a 394-4V. Ran like the proverbial raped ape. We used it as a loaner car for customers - until one guy decided he was going to pull a holeshot with the car in (what he thought was) "L". It wound up with the sizable impression of a telephone pole in its keister. (see how easily we weave in and out of such subjects around here?)

I used to work in music retail, I still get great deals, I'm fortunate in that respect. On mine the finish is a little ripply around the base of the fingerboard, not bad but you would expect better. Also the stain is a little blotchy on the top, not that most would notice. I'm nit picking the bass is a fine effort by Gibson.  :)

Welcome, Finlover! As I read your about the style of your band, the cd-player is rolling the country album by David Ferguson. You heard it yet? It'll be released in Sweden next week. Great record! Sounds a lot like the early 60's country style, with overtones of Cash and Nelson. And the tunes... Ballad of a teenage queen amongst them. Love the record. Highly recommended to any country lover!

That is such a beauty!! :o  It was a friend of mine's white Firebird that inspired me to take a second look at the T-bird because it looked so damn cool!  If the new 'Birds were available in white it would have been a tough choice between that and the cherry.

You ARE lucky that your finish is perfect!  Apparently a few finish flaws are par for the course on these (and other Gibsons).  I realize nitro is more labor intensive than polyester (which is self-leveling), but you would think they'd pay extra attention to leveling the finish since it's one of the first things people notice.

Also....your car is my favorite Fender color. Matter of fact, I have a Fender PBass in that color on EBAY!!

You could be right!  Being a child of the late-'70s/early-'80s, which was the absolute Dark Ages of industrial design, I'm drawn to all things Space Age.

That P Bass is a stunner!!  Is it sacrilege to want a Thunderbird in Burgundy Mist?  I'd settle for one in the Gibson custom color "Heather", which was from the '60 Cadillac color chart.

Have to agree concerning a bit about the country of the early 70's. Commander Cody, and the stuff made by Flying Burrito Bros, Grateful Dead, and a whole bunch of other bands, are really what I need for breakfast. Though I really fell deeply in love with the tunes by Johnny Cash, Marty Robbins, and that girl who's name skips my mind right now, the chick that got killed in an airplane crash in -63 or -64, who sang Crazy - right into your heart - from the late 50's, early 60's. And then came The Beatles, and I forgot about everything else...

...any pics of a Frost Blue 'bird?

Here are a couple of frosty pics from my stash.  The reverse was a refin, and the NR was a nicely done copy.

You're thinking of Patsy Cline.

Maybe I'm confused here. Are you saying that you consider Commander Cody, the Burritos and the Dead to be country? That's what I'd call country-influenced hippie music, not what I'd call country.

Real 60s country (with bass):

I'm with you, Dave!  If I had my druthers our material wouldn't extend much past the early '70s.  Even most "outlaw country" doesn't do a whole lot for me.

Not much of an outlaw fan either, aside from Gary Stewart. And his music really harks back to an earlier era. There was still some good 50s-60s honky tonk music still being made in the 70s.

A custom finished 'Bird probably isn't as expesive as you'd think, start with a used one - I think Marty Bell is reasonable. I'm hoping to have my black '76 refinned later this year  :)

Subie's don't have fins but they're sure great little cars for gigging and getting around in crappy weather, treat yourself to one!

Now that's what I'm talking about!  I actually do this song in another band that's more focused on "hard" country.  Sweet Teisco bass he's got there!  I guess the George Jones gig didn't pay too well back then.  Sounds pretty good though.

For the first half of this song ("Don;t Play A-11") I was trying to think how an A-11 chord sounds and if it sounded "sad" and why I souldn't play it......Then I realized he was singing about pushing the A-11 button on an old jukebox for some old song. DUH!

Jon, that gives me a great song idea for a song. Maybe "Please Don't Play CMaj7#11" will be a smash hit for me.  :)

Yeah, Dave, of course I consider The Commander, The Dead, and the rest hippie music! Music I love. I think the music grew into a very interesting territory when The Dead begin throwing in country influences, and do a lot of regular country.
Any way, those David Ferguson tunes are really nice. Hope anyone here gets to hear the tunes.

Hippie country music got me into country music in the first place...

Pure Prairie League and Emmylou Harris are still favorites of mine....and I used to love to hear Earl Scruggs and his boys when they came to town...

I do like Brad Paisley...he sure can play and sing.

Well, doppelgänger IS a German word.  Hmmmmm...

What I wanna know is who is the guy in Uwe's profile picture?  Is it Uwe in a previous rock star life?  Kinda looks like Mick Mars to me.

That is me around 81/82, my beloved Kramer XKB-10 "Flying Broom" and the Farrah Fawcett T-shirt date the picture! Some "Unleashed in the East"-era-JP influence there too, I was a big fan of Rob Halford's gay biker look back then, weren't we all? The sideburns are more Saxon/NWOBHM though! Back then I was absolutely unaware of Mötley Crüe, I first heard of them around 1984 or so.

Awesome!  I wish I had looked half as cool at that age!  The XKB-10 was a radical looking bass, how'd it sound?  I'll bet that aluminum neck felt pretty uncomfortable on those chilly German nights.  And I'm not one of those "living in the past" types, but old Priest still rocks!!

Why in the hell did you grow up?!

I had a Kramer V just like this one about that time, it was a backup to my 4001 Rick, that bass redefined the term "neck dive"!

     I really can't argue with that, being a 53 y.o. child myself.
Odd thing is, I remember when my late father was in his '50s, in recollection he seemed so adult - what the hell's wrong with me?!

Don't be so harsh on yourself, Mark, in a way many of your pasttimes today are of very adult nature!

Yeah, when my father turned 50 in 81 I thought, "gosh, now he's ancient ...". Never mind, he still thinks I do childish stuff even though he's now 81.

I never had complaints about the Kramer, still have it, still play it (since the mid-eighties it has EMGs and not the original Schaller Model 2 rip-off, look, I was young and obviously had too much money!). It's a bass that through its sheer weight and unbalancedness separates the men from the boys. And our then-drummer playing on it with his sticks during his drum solo was an integral highlight of our show.try thatz with another bass!

In the small picture it looks like you had flowers in your hair (which would have been a nice tongue in cheek contrast to the leather and googles)
But in the larger pic it looks like a garter belt turned into sweatband? (leather and lace?)

A garter belt, no less. Well, my girlfriend at the time wouldn't wear it ("I feel awkward with it ..."), so rather than let it go to waste I thought someone has to wear it ... I'm pragmatic in that way. And I liked the New York Dolls as well. The In too much too soon album which I had rescued from the bargain bin had mesmerized me. I only heard the Todd Rundgren (mis)produced 1st album much later.

My LE Cherry TB is unfortunately currently at the lutiher for fretend filing! It turned all spiky. Many new Gibsons do that in the dry winter climate of Germany but the wood (IIRC it is preciosa on mine)  used for the fretboard in this case seems to do it even more than the "procured under circumstances that warrant further explanation"-rosewood and ebony usually used.

As regards my other TBs, I'll post something when I'm back in the office.
