Title: I went and did it again.
Post by: jumbodbassman on May 20, 2011, 09:48:22 AM
Well after many years away I have seemed to gotten back on the tube amp saddle.    Probably Scott's fault with his Hiwatt love...  Anyway so i stumbled across another  B15S and i could't resist. :-[  This was was recently reconditioned and in much better overall shape then the one i got 2 weeks ago.  Also has the altec speaker in it.  Haven't spent much time with it yet but at first blush it appears to be slightly lower volume and more mid rangey.  It has the all the correct tubes including the 7027's.   The other amp has  fatter looking sovtek 5881's in it and the CTS speaker and appears more beastly.  i will spend more time AB/b ing them when i get some time....

Nice collection you are accumulating! I foolishly sold my B-15N a few decades ago back when I was hard up for money. I need to stir up some inspiration in myself a finish my project so I can re-saddle myself. If I end up not liking the results, I can sell it ('59 Bassman) to a guitarist.  8)

The lower volume and midrangeyness is probably courtesy of the Altec speaker, which handles more power but has less bottom.

turns out part of the rattle on the first b15s (more beat up one)  was from a tear in the CTS speaker.  I have pulled it out and will have it reconed and beefed up if they can do such a thing (voicecoil??)  .  in the interim I put a mint condition mid 80's JBL 2225H in the cab.  Actually sounds really nice.  great lows.  I haven't A B ed it with the Altec yet to compare but so far i am liking it alot.  The CTS, when i get it reconed , may find itself in the B15N cab from fliptops which is currently empty.  i have a nice  EV 15B that i was going to put in there but i will see.  Part of the problem with the CTS i think is it only handles 75 watts.  great if I use it only in a studio but I am thinking of taking one/some  of these  out to small venue R & B / softer rock type gigs and 75 watt speaker will not cut it IMO unless I am using 2 cabs....

such tough choices

I will gladly take the blame for your latest purchase ;) Nice collection of amps! I rehearse with a '70s B25B Killer little amp perfect for small rooms and recording.
