Title: looking for inspiration - punk country
Post by: EvilLordJuju on February 05, 2011, 02:15:03 PM
Theres a new track the band is doing that I need a bassline for.

Basically it is a Johnny Cash Fulsom Prison style country plod thing, but we need to do it slightly punkier.

As far as I can tell (i'm not a big fan, despite the Epiphone Newport) most Johnny cash basslines are much the same.  I have got a bassline already made up, but it's not final yet.

So does anyone know of any punkier/heavier/grungier versions of his songs... it would be interesting to know what other bassplayers have done with these lines over the years.

thanks guys

Social Distortion did a cover of Ring of Fire. I think June Carter Cash wrote it, but he made it pretty famous.

Jason & the Scorchers had that Punkabilly thing going on during the '80's & '90's - not being a Johnny Cash fan myself, I'm not sure if they covered any of his stuff.  They were a fun band.

Best of luck.

Woot!

We play Social D's version of "Ring of Fire" usually pretty late in the evening - It brings the house down! I love it when the crowd yells thw chorus back at us  :)

I'd sure check an old fave band of mine, The Beat Farmers - true Cowpunk!

Big Ugly Wheels.

And a true classic "Gun Sale at the Church"   ;D

i don't know what key it is in but if it were me, i would try A

this is a really bad recording and it is live is prolly why, i think the original song was in D

I love the Stop n Go dynamic in this song:

Not really Punk but close. It's a mid 90s Pop Rocker.

I was actually just wondering how to do something like it with one of my songs.
Well I've got one that's based on Folsom Prison Blues too!
Maybe this sort of vibe is what it needs to liven it up.
If you don't use this for yours, Jules, I may use it for mine.
May use it for mine anyway.

Try combing rockabilly and psychobilly music for ideas. They usually use uprights but I bet you can find some good ideas. You might also try Celtic punk bands: The Pogues, Flogging Molly, The Mahones, etc. They often have nifty bass riffs.

This is "interesting" and kinda cool.  Personally, I detest record scratching...but I'm old and crotchety.
I tried to look past it.

I kinda refuse to listen to or watch any band that has a "scratcher" on the stage.  I'm old and anti- scratchity

I'm only scratchy when wearing wool - and not fond of it then.

Yup...Incubus comes to mind.  I really liked the first 10 or so songs I listened to from them.  Really dug Light Grenades, then....scratchity.
Why, oh why?!  A clear case where nothing is better than something.

Scratching is now considered music by some people.

Then again, Christina Aguilera and the Black Eyed Peas are considered worthy of performing at the Super Bowl by some people.

Try as I may, I'm just never going to get the Black Eyed Peas ???. I get the fact that Fergie is pretty hot can take you a long way in the biz,but these SOBs are doing REALLY well . Again , I admit that Fergie is pretty hot, but NOFREAKINBODY is that hot :o.
When you're a singing group, somewhere down the line you're going to have to sing.......Right?????? Even the Spice Girls hit the notes once in a while.

There are a bunch of nice and inexpensive effects for live performance that will autotune you to the right note and give you options on splitting your voice  to create perfect harmonies  above and below, above and above below and below etc. I've never used anything like that but they sure do make me curious. Some of the demos I've heard were really impressive. I always viewed this as cheating, but the older I get the more my morals are willing to compromise ;D.

At least the Peas used Misirlou as a backdrop for one of their numbers.  That shows some decent musical judgment.

I picked up a TC Helicon Harmony-G pedal for my son last year.  No one else in their band sings at all, and it really is kinda cool.  He hasn't used it live, but he has for recording upstairs - it's a neat tool for adding some color to the vocals. Helps making decisions about adding extra vocal tracks and such.

That's the one I was thinking of, I couldn't remember the name. They have a lot of neat little toys ;D

If you're going to be playing ANYTHING punk-country, you need to study the pioneers of the genre...
