Not for me, but someone here must want this ;D
-
Mark King acolytes come forth - isn't your thumb already itching beneath all that gaffa tape?
-
Well darn, already outbid! Oh well...
-
You could always go for the slightly pricier "deluxe" single pickup model:

 ;)
-
Wow! And I thought the Gibson was unattractive.
-
Maybe there's a market for this, the 47/2nd/Base with revolutionary 'pick your position' pickup. It's 'Over the Top'TM

Be Totally COOL Like Kip Winger, Duran Duran & Devo!!!
Yeah, that's totally cool. ;D
-
Man that Lane Poor bass is a special kind of ugly... rare for a reason!

That could make a cool steampunk interpretation of the Washburn Rail! ;D

A college buddy of mine ended up working for Devo. Next time I see him I'll ask!

Dang, now that I look at it, that's not nearly as ugly as the headless bass I have at the house. *Disclaimer: it's not mine, I picked it up for a friend.*

I hope you get it. I'm too fat for a bass like the 20/20. :-[
-
I kinda like the 20/20 looks, actually.
Then again I like Devo too... ???
Does this make me cool like Winger? ;D
-
I'm watching the auction.
I like the 20/20 because nobody else seems to like it (except Kip Winger)
-
I like the looks but not enough to place a bid.
-
You know, if you're going to do it, go all the way...

Is that the former Edgar Winter bass player? I once read that he had a bass integrated in his glam boiler suit, but never saw a pic.
The 20/20 is what it is. A period piece of today quaint, but then highly fashionable, yet nevertheless timelessly well-thought out design. Don't knock the poor thing.

High bid is stil low.... :o

That's Stig Pedersen (from Denmark, IIRC). Do an image search, you'll find more.

He plays a 2 stringer! Is that common amongst Danes?

It's common with Stig.

Wow, that must be a record for a 20/20
$1280!

Dan Hartman of the Edgar Winter Group ! I remember reading about this back around '75 or so I think he said it cost 5k to have made!
-
Wow, that must be a record for a 20/20
$1280!
Somebody had to want it a lot to pay about 3x what they usually sell for.
It will be interesting to see what happens next time one is listed.
-
I'm the guilty one........ I was figuring on getting it for about $800.00, but someone bumped it up to 1,255.00 at the last minute. If it wasn't Ferrari Red and in such good shape, I wouldn't have bit. The one Jules has & this one are the only two I've ever seen. Now I have the pair..........(either oar!)
I was surprised to see that much interest in it, 31 bids. The Luna Silver bass I bought about three years ago, sat in the store for over a year at $1,000.00. I offered him $800.00 & settled for $900.00 with a new, modifiable hardshell case.
If there really are only 12 of these in existance, as per Walter Carters guess, we have 4 of them on this board.
-
Congrats Grog!
I was watching this auction too. But when it went over 750, I deciced not to bid.
-
I'd never thought I'd see the day where people would seriously go after a 20/20. But I'm gratified they do. It's a careful and detailed overall design, not a loveless affair like some of the other Gibson 80ies basses such as Explorer and Q-80/90 or IV/V (let down by its look, not its qualities).
-
George, the 20/20 owners of the world thank you for upping the value overnight. 8)
-
Buy high, sell low............. I guess for one insane moment, I was tired of always loosing by one bidder. I won this one by just a few bucks. Now that I'd convinced myself that i would never see another, they will be popping up everywhere. According to the tracking numbers, it should be here Saturday, if I'm home to sign for it. I'll post a picture of the pair soon after.
-
Gongrats! Now, go buy a boat! :D
-

of course they will; look what they sell for! ;D

It took me some time to realise I like it. It's a daring design. The headstock with the machine heads lay-out is brilliant. Doomed to fail in a conservative market.
I struck me that Grog -being a Les Paul Bass fan- obviously likes the 20/20 too. Although there might not be obvious similarities on first sight, they both are quite different to what could be found on the market when they were introduced.
-
Gongrats! Now, go buy a boat! :D
I have a boat, it's full of lawn furnature & crap. "Oh Sole Mio"! Most of my guitars were at one time or another concidered odd. The RD's and the Low Impedance stuff is slowly coming around. The 20/20 is almost the Flying V of the bass line. The Flying V was a joke when it was introduced. But it gained popularity sooner than the 20/20 ever will. One local store owner once told me, "It would have to have three horns on it before you'd by it!"
-
The thing I really like in 20/20 design is its upper extended horn, built for balance! Brilliant! Oh, and that 80s aura that surrunds it ofcourse.
-
It has a very chunky, dare I say manly neck. Whether ole Ned was paying tribute to Gibson tradition or whether he already knew that "you have to give the neck what you taketh away from the body", I don't know, but unplugged this bass is no anemic sounding toy. The "treble/bass and not much in between" is a tribute to the times and a consequence of the electronics, not a structural issue of the bass.
If Gibson did a Ned Steinberger-catered reissue of these basses with state of the art active electronics and a midrange boost, I would unhesitatingly gladly buy one.
-
Congrats! Yes, do post pics when you get it!
How many 20/20s did Gibson make?
-

Yeah, now I feel guilty for driving up the price! ;)

The original Steinberger L2 basses had pretty manly necks as well. They were still 1 1/2 at the nut but were very chunky. I found them to be very comfy.

How many 20/20s did Gibson make?
About a year and a half ago, I emailed Walter Carter at Gruhn's Guitars and asked him what his guess was as to how many 20/20 were produced. His answer was that he'd only seen two, that he thought only about 12 had been produced total. I think that might be a bit low, I've run into about 8. But I'm sure there aren't many out there.
-
It's got to be way more than that (no offense to Walter Carter). Considering that we see them on eBay maybe three or four times a year plus the ones owned by members here and/or at Jules' forum, it would surprise me if there were fewer than 100. After all, we're a small corner of the bass world.
-
I once read that they were a limited run of a couple of hundred. Maybe people just keep them as they are good basses and the resale value was low up until very recently!!! The red ones are more rare though.
-
I missed a Luna Silver one a few months back. It was on Craigslist for $250.00.

Interesting quote in iGoogle this morning:
In a country as big as the United States, you can find fifty examples of anything.

The Ferrari Red 20/20 arrived today. It was extremely well packed & had no issues, (except my wife thought it was the ugliest bass I'd ever dragged home!). I mentioned earlier that my Luna Silver bass wanted to be re-united with it's Redneck brother. As it turns out, the serial numbers were only 2 numbers apart! The Luna Silver ended in 89 & The Ferrari Red ended in 91. All of the other numbers matched. Uwe & Jules, when you get a chance, check your serial no's & see how close they are to these.

Did she not see the silver one?
-
She did, but it was 3 to 4 years ago. I think she's lost track of my GAS problem. She was even less impressed when I showed her the silver one.
-
You must be - and no doubt will remanin - the only person on earth to own two of these beasts. Love it! I don't feel so weird now anymore.
-
Just don't let her take them with you on your next canoeing trip. ;)
-
A very nice pair! Now you need to get these 2 Ned creations that I owned several years back.

In an odd way, I was drawn to these............ To keep my collection from getting way out of hand, I only collect Gibson stuff. The 20/20 kinda let me sneak off into Steinberger territory.
Here is my 1985 Futura, another unique mutant. :vader:

mine ends 794...
Thanks for checking! I checked the pictures you had posted and I could read all of the numbers but the last 2. These 3 basses are within sequence of 6 serial numbers. If Uwe's is close also, it could lead some insight into how rare these dogs really are.
-
Congrats on your new 20/20! They look much better than any of the other headless basses out there.
-
iirc, Uwe keeps his in pride-of-place...
iirc there was no Futura bass - something for our luthier buddies to take up... Shadow, you should take up the mantle for this lady... ;)
-
The Futura was designed to be a headless guitar. It was going to have Steinberger like tuners in the can opener cut out. Gibson marketing people got involved & decided that a headless guitar was a bad idea, so they put a headstock on this model and it's bolt on cousin, the Corvus. The result was a confusing guitar design. I kind of look at the 20/20 the same way. It was built around the same time. ???
-
So, what does "20/20" mean anyway?
-
Perfect vision................ ??? ???

Gibson were 20 years ahead of their time. The shape of the instrument is perfect ....

A multi purpose device that doubles as a bass, ingenious! ;D

Ned had a hand in the Spector NSX bass as well. Strange looking beast.

What brand, model guitar is this? It's pretty much exactly the same as the Gibson version was intended to look like. :P :P :P

From Wikipedia: "Twenty20 is a form of cricket". So someone at Gibson must have thought it looked like a cricket bat.
-
With the Corvus being an option for Guitar Hero, and millions of kids & adults being reintroduced to it's can opener shape, I wonder if that's sparked a renewed interest in it? :P :P
-
Maybe the inspiration predated PACMAN...?

Twenty20 cricket is newer than the 20/20 bass.
Gibson obviously has great influence in the world of cricket. ;D
-
I found an old post on a Harmony-central.com forum of a guy asking about his 20/20. This would be the third Ferrari Red one I've seen, making my count (3) red, (6) silver.
http://acapella.harmony-central.com/showthread.php?1945400-Gibson-20-20-bass
These guys had no love for the cricket paddle either.
