We only have the sellers word that the finish is original, and with the logo issue i'd assume a refin without evidence to the contrary. Black basses are particularly hard to photograph, so unless I saw this first hand i'd veer towards caution.
Nice bass though, I like my Newports a lot.

Agreed. Especially with the replacement logo.
I don't know where he got the estimated book value. Even before the recession I don't recall any Newport selling for that much.
I have seen really high prices for Newports which were literally in perfect condition, like new. But his is nowhere like that. He is quite active in the wishful thinking department.
A couple years back, a good Newport was running in the $1200-1500 range. When the market tanked, prices dropped to the $900-1000 area. I just sold mine over the summer for $975. There were 2 other listing for Newports at the time at $1200, with no bidders.
I was tempted to do a black refin on mine, figuring that any good Johnny Cash tribute band would pick it up for the Marshall Grant factor. I'm glad I didn't. I seriously doubt that the black was the original finish. I thought that only Grant got a custom black finish.
I refinned mine black with a rattlecan back in the day...sold it for $75. That was around 1974 ;D

Back in the '70s, you could pick those up for $200 just about anywhere. I even got a Guild M-85 semi-hollow body that was dead mint for $225. I paid $650 for my Embassy the first time around, when Thunderbirds were going for about $1000.
I remember seeing unmodified Newports in EX shape for $500 in the mid 90s.
I bought an old '61 Newport Deluxe (2 pickups) at a San Antonio Pawn Shop for $100 in 1995. Had the black plastic covered mudbucker and the small 'bucker had a PAF sticker on it.
I have NEVER seen a black one, doesn't mean they don't exist but I am more than skeptical that that is original.
How does a logo "flake off" when it's under the clear coat?? And where's the S/N? I don't see it.
I'd rather had the natural finish Newport I posted the other day.
Recently a Newport went for nearly $900 on eBay and other had numerous bids before the auction ended at slightly over $1000 but not hitting reserve.
Hmmm...what does that make a gutted Embassy with a neck repair worth? ;D
