Someone suggested a poll. Good idea. Here ya go, with my thanks. If you already answered in the previous thread, no worries. Keeping tabs on all of it. ;D
I suspect that the SNS (Skinny Neck Society) will control the vote with the 1 1/2" width. If you still have concerns about neck construction and stability maybe you could consider a hybrid width - say 1 9/16" ?
I presume we have no "STICK" players here, too... :P
I can handle 1 3/4" if it isn't a fat neck. Wide and slim works fine by me. I prefer 1 1/2" but 1 5/8" is easy to play as well. I just don't bond with really thick necks. Thats why I sold my Lakland Glaub. Great bass, too fat of a neck.
As of rite now, the skinnies and baseball bats are tied. Who knew?

Now we're talkin'! That would probably feel great made nice and slim front to back.
bump. A few more and I'll take it down, promise.
There was an issue before - I think you can only lock it once completed...
I love the very small nut width of my '76 Thunderbird (35mm?) but I also play a 44mm '50s P reissue. I prefer a tiny neck, but something in between is okay to me.
I'm most comfortable on 1 5/8" but have discovered that it's more about the neck profile than width. I had a 60's series Jazz a while back that was beefy enough that I didn't even notice the narrower neck.
My vote for 1 3/4 was based on my 5 string. The original Steinberger L2 5 string basses had the same 1 1/2 inch nut and needless to say the spacing was very tight.
Put me down for 1 1/2"

Duly noted. It's a tough decision. Guess I could do 4 different nut widths. That goes against the KISS rule, however...
Also, I have a truss rod AND 2 graphite rods in there. 1/ 1/2 seems structurally iffy after routing 3 channels. That's a lot of material isn't it?.
To be honest, I've never used the carbon rods and really haven't felt the need for them. They can make the neck overly stiff and add weight from what I've read, although minimal. ( :bored:.............waiting for Dave to weigh in tell me the error of my ways..................)
Overly stiff. Is there such a thing? ;) weight wise, it is minimal. I think they can improve sound and add stability. Sometimes in Austin necks can get wonky in the heat..

No error of your ways, IMHO, just a matter of preference. Making a neck stiffer will change the sound, and depending on the sound you're looking for, that may not be a good thing. No one wants a banana neck, but you can build a neck that's stiff enough without carbon fibers.
I think the depth of the neck will influence how well you can incorporate the rods as well as the width. I like a neck with a bit of meat to it though I don't like the baseball bat feel.
I'm wondering how a hybrid width might be received as it looks like 1 1/2 and 1 5/8 are the most popular.

I'm going with one and 5/8 for this first batch! I would like to leave the poll up, if no-one objects. Not only the votes, but the comments are very helpful and informative. Thanks all.
I see. We don't have heat or humidity problems here!
Of course there is more to it than just width. Although they are both 1 1/2", I love the Thunderbird neck, but have never found a Jazz bass that I was comfortable with. My favorive neck is built by Carvin, is 1.6" at the nut, very slender front to back, and the oil finish feels wonderful.

Always been a bit curious about Carvin. They look as though they would sound and play well. The logo is absolutely fuggly however. At the risk of sounding shallow, I ve always felt Peavey would have been perceived more favorably as a pro piece of equipment without that horrendous logo.
Logos matter, look what just happened to The Gap stores with their attempt at a new one.
I personally always like the pre-cbs flat wide P bass or a 64 thunderbird thin like a j bass.
