The mudbuckers from my EB-3L were rewired for a bunch of switches and coil tapping, etc., etc. I'd just like to return it to the original 2-wire set up. Anyone here who can help out? They work just fine but they each have like 4 wires coming out of them!
-
You mean both the mudbucker and the minibucker have 4 wires? That must be a custom pickup job. What color are the wires?
-
I wondered what all those switches were for!
-
The Dimarzio Model One in my '64 has four wires...I'll bet that if you check their wiring diagrams the four wires split out the same way.

Re your MB - sounds like Joe's coil tap type mod - you just need to make sure which "pair" go together and wire them in series - my only word of warning is re the output - the biggest surprise I had with mine was the significant increase in output when I reversed the phase of one coil from standard, so you may need to play her before you permanantly wire in - stock output was the quieter of the two...
Someone here will be able to let you know the standard resistance of the bridge pup and again I must presume that the wiring will be as above - in series and in phase...
-
Yeah - what Ken said.
Each coil in the mud measured about 15K, and when wired up stock with the two coils in series it measured ~30K. This was a late-60s version, but I think yours would be about the same. If you have some way of posting a picture of the business side of things I might be able to tell you what wire goes where.
The minibucker also has this? That's a new one for me, but same deal there I would imagine. I'm not sure what those should normally measure on a good day, though. Shows how much I value that pickup! ;D

On my original both white wires were paired and the only ones that came out to the connection point were black...
-
My original '67 minibucker measures 6.98k
-
Yes typical minis are on the 6,5k-8k range. Somebody did naughty things to this old lady!
-
OK, here you go. The pups each have 5 freakin' wires!! Help this poor woodworker, I don't want to have to send these out for surgery!
-
Might help to post some pics of the pickups? Could it be that these are after market and not original?
-
Doh! I forgot the pictures!!! Nope, these are genuine Gibson, just some Franekstein electrician got into them deep. Red, green, purple, yellow white!!!!! Yikes.

No idea, I cut the little buggers out after only playing it once. I'm a minimalist, I just don't desire all of these switches. When I want variation, I spin the dials on the Mesa.

You could try this for the mudbucker:
Basically:
- Connect the yellow and purple wires together
- Connect the white and green wires, and ground them
- Use the red wire as your output
I couldn't see a green wire on the mudbucker - so I'm assuming it might be ground... Also, I couldn't see the white wire very well, but I think its that one on the treble side of the neck coil. See if that meters out around 30K.
Unfortunately, I can't see where the wires terminate inside the minibucker, but try this same config and see if you get a 6-8K reading. Hopefully, they used the same color keying on the wires...

Oh- and I pity the foo' that coil taps the world's most tinny, brittle pickup! ;D

Me too, but combined with some mud may have some nice results! ;)

I should have taken this picture earlier. Here it is from the side. The green is grounded to the pup frame.
Ohm readings are: Purple and Red = 14.8 White and Yellow = 15.5
I'll do some measurements on the mini later tonight.

The third of your first pictures shows the white wires connected to yellow/purple - they would originally have been shorted together and left beneath the coils...
From the colours showing on the other pup, I would presume you could do the same on both - so this time, as per Joe... ;)
The darker side of Kenny would advise to ensure you reverse phase for some SHOCK AND AWE output... :vader:

Cool- those pics show everything. That diagram I posted above should work to revert the mud back to its original config. I'd expect to see a reading around 30K after connecting the wires as described, and measuring across the red (output) and the green/white pair (ground).

Are you going to try to restore the Varitone/choke setup?
-
Thanks so much for your help guys, especially Joe! I'll let you know how it works out!

I might try to do a varitone set up. I like the look of these..............

Wow! Those have been reworked for sure ! must be so you can split coils. Kinda scary !

Yeah, Dr. Frankenbass was into these babies. I'll restore them to their former glory!

You know, you could build one of those for little money, components are about 6 euros (without the dialplate).

Following Joe's notes was easy - reversing an MB's phasing is >quite interesting - I'll post sounds (once I get past my current hiatus) on my PC posting...
