Title: Towing firm getting what it deserves
Post by: Dave W on May 25, 2010, 12:07:09 PM
Fight with student may wreck tow firm (http://www.freep.com/article/20100523/NEWS06/5230525/1320/Fight-with-student-may-wreck-tow-firm)

Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of guys, I'm sure.

Towing companies have an unpleasant job to do, and sometimes complaints against them are unjustified. But it looks like this company stepped way over the line, and not just in this case (an F- BBB rating). There's no way they'll win their suit against the student who's campaigning on Facebook, that's protected speech even if Michigan doesn't have an anti-SLAPP law, and he has the means to countersue. When you screw enough people, it comes back to bite you eventually.

Had a drummer buddy who owned his own towing company in SF.
Literally rode shotgun with him a few times doing repos in Oakland in the wee hours.

Johnny was nearly 7 feet,
so he was a bit intimidating,
but I wouldn't want that job.
No how.

These guys seem to have stepped over the bounds though.
What goes around...

Clamp bandits are nothing new in the UK... I was clamped by a contractor on a public highway (single yellow line with no chevrons on the kerb allowed you 10 minutes drop-off time) in central London; the ticket on the vehicle showed that I had parked in violation blahblahblah, but when I checked the local sign that meant for 50 yards beyond where my van was parked, so I took a shed load of pics, had the company pay for the clamp (over the phone) and recommended they take action for lost revenue...

The contractors got highly p'd off at me for taking pictures of them unclamping my vehicle with the sign clearly in view and my vehicle not in violation of the law...

Didn't really bother me as I was on my way out of that company (big time jerks) and it meant all I had to do was sit, wait... and my laptop got some extra typing time...

Another towing story: Decade-long Bay Area tow-and-sue scam (http://www.mercurynews.com/news/ci_15055808?nclick_check=1)

One of the principals will get eight years in prison for attempted grand theft, perjury and suborning perjury, embezzlement, conspiracy to obstruct justice, presentation of false evidence, and burglary. Nice guy.
