Title: 24 years ago today: Remembering Phil Lynott
Post by: Hornisse on January 04, 2010, 09:12:37 PM
Philip Parris Lynott passed on.  He was one of the guys I wanted to be like when I started playing.  I bought me a black P bass in 1979 because of him.  RIP Phil!

I was living in England at the time and was saddened but not too shocked when it happened. His professional life seemed on the upswing (he'd had two hits with Gary Moore in 1985) but his personal life wasn't doing so well. There was a lot of controversy surrounding his death and rumors of poor treatment he received from emergency personnel, but I don't remember many details all these years later. What I do remember is being really depressed that another great musician had destroyed his life with booze and drugs. Phil was a true artist, but seemed a tortured one at that. R.I.P.

One of the greatest singer/songwriters as well as being a great bassplayer & band leader.
Yesterday was the 24th anniversary of his death.

Here's his short bio:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phil_Lynott

Been watching lots of Thin Lizzy vids on youtube yesterday & today.

His last hit was his highest chart topper with Gary Moore; it was #3 in Ireland & #5 in the UK:

He was gettin' better & better....

...but Alas! the drug & alcohol abuse did him in.

Yup. I paid my respects a couple of days ago on the anniversary of his death. Big hero of mine.

Same here. I'm a huge fan.

But I have to disagree with Terry about him getting better and better.
The stuff he recorded with Grand Slam couldn't hold a candle next to Thin Lizzy.
The drugs had already taken their toll...

RIP Phil, I remember what a breath of fresh air they where when they came out, classic, under rated the best stuff usually is. Man I count myself lucky all those pitfalls were in my path, I chose for the most part to go around them. I was at the Drs today for a little procedure and with each check point they checked my age....................."you sure don't look 50" was the refrain when they found out I don't take any meds they were almost speachless. I am so fortunate to still be able to do it. As I like to say I may not have all my hair but I got all my teeth ;)(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v102/godofthunder59/2552578120083345702PEYuMe_ph.jpg)

Sorry, but gotta agree with Basvarken.  That video clip was hardly the Philip Lynott of legend.  He sounds good, but it does look like he's struggling to do it all.  I've got a VHS tape, Dedication, that has all the best Thin Lizzy stuff.  I'll have to dig it out.

The Live CD that came out last year "Still Dangerous" is very good too.  I remember spending a lot of time learning this song from the Bad Reputation LP.  Kind of an eerie title though........

+1
A number of his tunes seemed to be a foreshadowing and Phil knew it as seen here in "Got to Give it Up":

I just read Clapton's autobiography in 2 days!!
It goes from ENTHRALLING to APPALLING & back to ENTHRALLING.
The appalling part is his drug & alcohol problems.
He really put out a lot of his fire with smack & alcohol. Alas
Just as he came back to life & has had HUGE success I think Phil would have too if he went thru rehab.

Clapton sure has redeemed himself by building the Crossroads center & auctioning guitars to fund it.
AMAZING how much people paid for his axes!!!  :o

I sure wish someone would have stepped in to help Phil as Clapton's friends helped him.

There was no stopping him. Phil was very much his own man.
Several friends tried to talk some sense into him.
I remember an anecdote by Jim Fitzpatrick (who made the artwork for most albums): He bought him a bicycle (or home trainer) to help him get back in shape. After Phil's death he found it still unused...

Phil was rather determined...

And yes, Phil often referred to his own addiction in his songs. Here's another one:

When I was 14 and heard those opening chords to Jailbreak back in the summer of '76 it hit me like a ton of bricks.  I was living in San Antonio back then (Royalgate/Five Palms area, Dave) and listening to KISS-FM which is still on the airwaves.  I bought all of their stuff after that LP came out.

I loved Massacre off of Johnny The Fox.

The first records I ever bought were 45s - Thin Lizzy - Jailbreak/the Boys are Back.... and Wings - Let 'em In/Cook of the House.

Played/sang Massacre MANY times with my high school band. Also, Emerald, Chinatown, and Bad Reputation.

The first Thin Lizzy song I ever did was a very old one, from the first time Gary Moore was in the band.
Concrete Blond also covered this song.

That's one of my favorite Thin Lizzy songs!

Here's a live version from the time they had the new line up with Gorham/Robertson.
You can clearly hear they're still trying to "find their feet" with the twin guitar parts (at 0:40)

As iconic as the Jailbreak Live & Dangerous albums may be (and I really like them), over the years I've come to prefer the Nightlife and Fighting stuff.
It's funkier and more raw.
Especially the live recordings from that era are very cool. There's some very good BBC recordings that have recently been released on CD.
