That's one of my favs of theirs, along with that ominous ending to Whaling Stories.

Speakin' of mammals (and yes- waterfowl too), and 70s hard-ish rock stuff...

This was the first really hard rock song I liked when I was still a child:

Both Priest and Girschool (with the gorgeous Kelly Johnson

on the Les Paul who has since succumbed to cancer  :-\) did credible versions of it, but could not beat the original for sheer drama and energy.

And this song I also found to be in the Race with the Devil vein, I guess it was the frantic singing and the mad laughter:

The Rattles were an early sixties German beat band well beyond their prime (and original line up) when this was released in 1970, really a freak hit for them. Did that song ever cross the pond to you guys?

the bass in the rattles video looks like a victim of homemade teardrop syndrome!  I didn't think that became fashionable until the ripper was in production!

I spent the day with Girlschool, taking them shopping for clothes after their luggage had been lost.

As for my school days, here's what permeated our cafeteria in those days.

And my friends and I were off the beaten track with these guys.

Ah yes, Procol Harum :) Although they were Brits, they were in the Detroit area so much they were like a local band. Saw them many times and they were always a great show ;D
Same story with the James Gang, I got to party with them a bit . They were in town all the time.

I think Smoke On The Water coming into the house on 45 was a major sea change.  For the next few years I ate up Deep Purple, Zeppelin, Tull, Aerosmith, etc.  For odd hard rock I have a fondness for What You Got by Duke and The Drivers.  Great rocking tune.  I tended to stay on that early 70s line of not obviously metal, but post garage-y hard rock. That could even have been bluesy stuff like J Geils.

I had some interest in that late 70s California guitar stuff like Van Halen, and Yesterday And Today, but when I first heard the Sex Pistols that stuff just got shut off for a long time.

That feels so unbelievably good ... I'm the Harvey Milk of Deep Purple fandom here.

This is an obvious classic, but the 12 dreams LP is a firm clasic with me...

Anyone remember Lee Michaels?
He played Hammond B-3 mostly with a big fat cat named Frosty on drums.
His best album is Carnival of Life, with a whole band featuring a cat named John Keski on bass.

My best friends from school went to see him & told me it was a really nice an' LOUD show!
They saw FREE too & that was anuzza KILLER show I missed. Alas
They said Andy Fraser kind of danced three steps forward & back which helped inspire that Dancing Bassplayers thread over yonder.

Yep, Lee Michaels is another one that used to be in town all the time. Incredible show ;D. His records never did him justice , and yeah he was plenty loud. In fact, my understanding is that all that loudness did him in. I heard he lost most of his hearing
