Ain't that a fine how do you do ! They laid me off today. I have wanted to strike out on my own but I was hoping to do it on my terms. Oh well one door closes , another opens.
I hate to hear that Scott. Hopefully something better will come from this. Good luck!!
Sorry to hear this, Scott. And so soon after your move.
That sucks, but as you said often it can be for the best in the long run.
That's bad:( I hope everything will be fine and you'll find something! Good luck
I'm sorry to hear that news. Sometimes change can lead you someplace better in the long haul, so stay positive!
Scheiße. :-\ :-\ :-\ I hope that works out to the best.
Uwe
Thanks guys I fear this is the tip of the ice burg I hope you all are safe. I'm lucky I have my 19th century skills and knowledge of the arcane to see me through. I just started taking in furniture to restore and have been ramping up my ebay sales and craigs list stuff . Like I said I was hoping to make a move sometime in the future, the future is now.
I make a living desigining (mostly intangible) technology solutions that probably have a lifespan of 2-3 years, and leading these solutions thru layer-upon-layer of corporate politics and bureaucracy. That sounds negative, but I do enjoy "making things work well together" - whether its people or technology. I'm also thankful I still have a job for the time being. That could change at any minute- you are right that it is just the tip of the iceberg for everyone.
My extra-curricular job involves building stuff that people will potentially use for year and years. Personally, I love working with my hands, and its gratifying to know that the stuff I am building on this front *might* still be valued by people 10-20 years from now. I don't make a lot doing it, but I love the work, and maybe someday I can do it full time.
Building and restoring furniture that people will use and cherish as heirlooms 100+ years from now leaves a tremendous legacy, and fulfills a basic need that will never go away. There is something to be said for those "19th century skills", as you put it.
good luck, Scott. I hope everything works out for you.
To quote Joey Ramone "Don't worry about me"
I'm there with ya, man. Been out since February. My position was eliminated too.
Good luck Scott ...& chromium & lowend1 too!!
I'm lookin' for a small part in a big movie. :D
Hopin' to get in Pirates of the Caribbean 4, 5 & 6!!!
DAMN!! >:( I'm very sorry to hear this Scott. Hang in there and I'm sure the "One door closes and another door opens" adage will work out for you. Good luck!
Hang in there Scott!
Scott,
Think of it this way, yesterday you were someones' employee. Today you're the president of the Dasson Corporation.
Best Wishes,
(the other) Scott

OK, so when you go public I'm up for at least the first share of stock. ;)
Hey Scott,
Sorry to come here and read this today. My current project ends in about a month and I'll probably be out of work for a while after it. It's a scary time... I'm glad to see your positive attitude survived the morning. It'll serve you well as you move forward, my friend. May your 19th century skills provide you with a 21st century living!
Sorry to hear about that Scott
I kind of know how some of you feel. My only job so far has been freelance work doing animatics for a small company in Venice, CA. Back in March, they got the contract they were trying to get with Walmart from the work that I had been doing and we were told that animatics were going to be coming in a lot faster. Well lets just say that last animatic I had from them was back in the first week of May and it was canceled the next day. Since then I have had animatics, it has just been a lot slower with my last group of work ending in July.
I was down a little on Sat. but I'm stoked today ! First Scott's Antiques and Furniture Restoration is now open, I already have work coming in this week and items up on ebay and craig's list. The Thunderbird Garage is now open, bridges bodies and pickguards. I have alot of options I could not be more excited.

See his thread in the Gibson forum.
Jeeze this gets better and better ! I stopped at a local indie music store today and they want to give me repair work ! They are backed up there guy is slowing down, he has been there for ever so I'm on board to take up the slack ! maybe I'll for get about fixing furniture and just do instruments !
This is always in the back of my mind...good luck--if you can make it without being someone else's employee, you'll be better off.
That's good news! A guy who can do nice work is seldom out of opportunities.
Just wait 'til your customers discover that you can take a splinter from a 60s NR T-bird and turn it into a complete bass. ;) You'll have more business than you can handle.
Thanks Dave, I gotta Give Michael Dolan credit for the neck !
Just got back from Clemson. I'm glad you're moving forward with your plans Scott. Necessity, and fate, have a way of moving us off the mark! I'm sure you'll do fine. Let me know if I can help in any way.
Thanks Bill!

You're welcome Scott. Seven years ago, I had a student who was great at computers and was dabbling part-time in web design, which she was incredibly good at. I, and another professor, encouraged her to quit her full time job and pursue her dreams for her own business. She finally did and now she has the number one web design company for health care organizations in the country. Do what you love and the rest will often work out! Besides, once you do become your own boss, you can't complain about about "them" any more. You are "them" now!!! ;) Hell, if I could start my own college, I would have been gone a long time ago!
Since the move I have been laying ground work to strike out on my own, they just gave me a little shove. I have a three prong assault all planned out. #1 Antiques and collectables- buy and sell using ebay, craigs list and by appointment only out of the carraige house. #2 Furniture repair and restoration. #3 All things Bass- bridges, pickguards, TB bodies, Fbird builds and selling vintage basses. My plate is full and I see a bright future. :)
that's the best news i (we, and i think i can pass on the sentiment from the players here but let them speak for themselves) could hear from you Scott!
