Title: cats & their basses
Post by: hieronymous on February 03, 2008, 04:54:30 PM
We think we own all that gear, or that house, but deep down we know that our cats are just letting us use them for the time being. For example, Sadie, my 12 year old black cat, and my 1975 Alembic Series I doubleneck:
She even lets me use the case:

(I didn't feel right posting cat pictures in a dog thread (http://bassoutpost.com/index.php?topic=6.0), so I started this one - post away!)

Find my black cat Booker T. in my Avatar:) My black cat Booker's gonna be a drummer, but my grey tiger Curtis will be a bass player. As you all know he's John Entwistle reincarnated,

Booker T:

BTW: I would love to see Booker T, sleeping in the white inside of my Gibson case. Or in the black Guild case of my girlfriends acoustic Guild. But I think he hates the smell or so.

Nice Vox Essex.  I've had a couple of them.

Post by: Chris P. on February 11, 2008, 12:57:27 AM
Hi guys,

The Vox is just a cheap oriental and modern T-25. Nice looks and great for playing at home, at radio stations or really small livingroom concerts.

Curtis is always licking guitar and bass strings. And pulling them with his paws. My brother was really confused when he heard some guitar noises without seeing anyone playing. He was even more confused when I told him it was just the cat:)

Both cats howl and make funny noises when someone plays guitar or bass. Like they're singing. It sounds like they hate it, but they never walk away and always sit at your lap if you play guitar. Strange isn't it? But I hear those stories all the time.

I've always been very careful about not leaving cases open when the cats are around. One time we had a party here with the band. When the keyboard player came to pick his gear up next day, he found one of the cats had left a pungent review in his gig bag. Probably complaining about an overlong version of Green Onions, I thought, though the cat wasn't called Booker T.

People talk about the more recent Rickenbacker cases smelling great, but I have one that smells like a combination of vanilla and cat pee. I'm not sure if that's the smell other people are getting, but I don't like it, and to top things off, the bass smells like that too! So I only let my cat in the case with supervision! Here she is in my Starfire case:

Great pictures so far!

I've got a new one, but this time it's "cats & their bass speaker cabs":
Sadie is so good - the first time she jumped on the cab she started to scratch, so I told her "no" and she hasn't done it since. I think her previous owners were strong in disciplining her - harsh, in fact, because I know that for several years she was forced to be an outdoor cat even though they had other cats that were indoors. Now she's queen of the roost! (If I'm not mixing my metaphors)

if you notice that everytime something new comes into the house your cats or cats will immediatly sit or stand on it or around as if to say "your mine now". being catless at the moment i have had several dozen in my life and have seen just about every strange thing a cat could do or try to do.

Hieronymous:

I always have my music phases. I can be completely into a band for weeks/months. Could be The Small Faces or The Band, but now it's The Who.

So:

Can you (maybe at  'Other Bass Brands') tell us some more about the Spyder? It looks like an Alembic Spyder, but no silver web-inlay, no dummy coil between both pick ups... I'm no Alembic connaiseur, so tell us!

I finally found a case through eBay for my MIJ Bas VI reissue. It's my first blonde case! (In my mind, I think I was kind of thinking that it would be tweed, but it's no big deal. Only thing is, it looks like it could get dirty easily, but that's what cases are for, right?!!) Here's Sadie investigating:

Here's another shot of her admiring the inside with the bass:

I'm working on getting this thing into playing shape, might post in the Fender forum at some point. The Bass VIs were pretty hard to find for a while there, especially for a decent price. Even the MIJ reissues were going for over a $1000, sometimes closer to $1500! I was very lucky, picked mine up for around $400 plus an Alembic Superfilter that had been included for free when I bought my Alembic doubleneck, so I think I got a pretty good deal!

"Play him off, piano cat" has become a weird YouTube fad with people editing it into completely unrelated footage. Here's my personal favorite:

I learned about it from the Soup, of course!

That's the most I've ever watched of the Golden Girls. As long as you're waiting for Keyboard Cat to step in, I guess you can stand the rest of it for a minute or so.  :)

We had our third annual Alembic Northern California Gathering yesterday, and I was fortunate enough to take delivery of my Stanley Clarke 5-string bass, after having the neck tweaked and Anniversary electronics installed by the Alembic wizards. Here's Sadie standing guard after inspecting it (including my '76 autumnglo 4001, Guild M-85 fretless and my wife's Allen Woody in the background):

That's one of the funniest things I've heard in a long time! That's this weird cushion from Ikea (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20138087):

I need that cushion. I'll check the Dutch Ikea ASAP!

A bit off topic (but hey, that's almost a rule here) but did anyone know Ikea is Dutch? And so are U2 and The Rolling Stones. All three companies are based in Holland. In Rolling Stones booklets you can see things like 'Rolling Stones BV'. BV is like Inc, GmbH, Ltd. and so.

Dutch...? so what's with the Swedish Meatballs...?

Ah... I got it, they went public and "floated" the companies on the Stock Exchange...  ;D

 ;D

I have two cats. The all-black Booker T. doesn't like basses. His brother Curtis only sits on my lap if I also have a bass on it, especially the Thunderbird. That, combined with his low voice and grey beard makes him JAE's reincarnation.

My dog just discovered cats this last summer (met a nice cat) and is just thrilled about them, very courious, Not really as seeing them as prey either, just like "what is is creature"?

Thanks for reviving this thread Denis! I like the mix of past and present - nice tribute to Nick! You inspired me to dig up some pics!

Eww! Or does that help clean the strings?  ???

Luna does something similar where she chews on the air next to things like cardboard boxes, guitar straps/stands, etc., but she doesn't actually touch it.

It's the rounds.  I think cats like the feeling on their tongue.  When I was young, we had a cat that had a favorite Christmas ornament.  He licked one spot clean of the silver finish.

Our new Siamese mix is quite the turd - she wants to play all of the time and if you don play with her she is royally pissed.  When the wife is in bed reading and the cat is not the center of the universe she simply walks over to lamp, sits beside it, and reaches up with both paws and pulls the chain turning off the lamp.  Talented, but still a turd nonetheless ;D  We usually get a woken up by her licking one of our noses :P

Do you know if she's allergic to their dander or to their saliva? Apparently there are a couple of things that people can be allergic to. Maybe if you found the right cat?...

She suffered for 6 years until my last cat had died. I'm not going to put her through another one. The neighbors' cats play in our yard, that's as close as I'm going to be to owning a cat.
