Title: Underrated British Bands in the USA
Post by: westen44 on February 23, 2026, 02:34:14 PM
The guy doing this video says these are bands hated in America.  This, of course, is not true.  Some of the bands on his list, like the Kinks, were in fact very popular here.  Overall, though, this is a list of bands that didn't get the attention they deserved in the USA.  In some cases, some of these bands are bands Americans have never even heard of.  It may just depend on what American you're talking about.  I see nurses a lot for my ailments.  The typical one knows little or nothing, for instance, about Slade.  Yet I have one nurse who saw Slade in person once at a British hospital.  They weren't playing, but visiting someone at that hospital is the way I understood it.  This particular nurse, although American, was trained as a nurse in the UK.

Except for the mid 60s, the Kinks were always more popular in the US and drew bigger crowds than at home or in Europe. A good number of Yanks are Anglophiles when it comes to Brit music, the British Invasion didn't happen for nothing.

But it doesn't work all the time, Slade, Sweet, T. Rex, Status Quo, Rory Gallagher (an Irishman I know, but let's see Ireland as part of the British Isles as opposed to part of the UK, ok?), for one reason or another they all failed to crack America. At the same time a Brit outfit such as Foghat ruled the American Midwest, yet couldn't get arrested at home or even in Europe.

I think the Anglophile label, in general, fits older Americans more than anyone. I tend to lean toward being an Anglophile myself, with a few exceptions, though, such as Jimi Hendrix and the Allman Brothers.  But there are other American bands which I never really got such as Aerosmith, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Creedence, Guns 'n Roses, The White Stripes, the Grateful Dead, etc.  The list goes on.  Some of these were fairly good, but quite overrated IMO.  This is why, for instance, when I used to go to the Netherlands I would be baffled by people listening to a lot of American music which I didn't think was very good, but evidently they did.  It seemed to me the Dutch, for whatever reason, might have been overrating American rock and underrating British.  Still, if someone is saying something complimentary toward my own country, I'm usually not going to complain.

I think of Aerosmith as the most American hard rock band ever. They couldn't come from anywhere else.

Did someone mention Slade? 😁😎 I'm a absolute huge fan Jim Lea is a monster bass player.  I'm such a big fan I commissioned John Diggins of Jaydee guitars ( John built Jim's bass at John Birch in the 70s) to build a replica, Jim put his bass up as a pattern and even autographed my bass! Over the years I've acquired Jim's road case,  a stage worn jacket and one of Slade's  Hiwatt DR201s.
Other UK bands that I love that had moderate success in the USA are Wishbone Ash, Mott The Hoople and Dirty Tricks. Foghat as mentioned ignored in the UK adorned is America.  One of my favorite bands, I was lucky enough to see them live in 74 and 78.
