Title: EB-3 has landed!
Post by: TBird1958 on November 07, 2024, 08:02:03 AM

Since I haven't been able to share this until now.....

Love this bass, it's truly a joy to play and the mudbucker is full of bassy goodness.
It's currently at Lull's getting a set up and an electronic once over as I'm not certain the 4
way switch is operating correctly.

Beauty! I'd love to find one someday to augment that SG.

It's got a few dings in it but overall it's in pretty good shape, the action could be a little lower, thus the trip to Lull's. As I understand it, slot heads were only made for a couple years, so maybe a little rare? It was under 2K shipped, so I think a good price as well.

The slotheads were 1970 and 1971 only. First appeared in 1970 catalog. There may have been a few from late 1969 but those were probably 1970s with 1969 pot codes. A few supposedly were released in early 1972 but I haven't seen one.

Beautiful bass, I love a good EB3!

What a looker, congrats!

Why did Gibson decide to glue the logo and not inlay it in the slotheads? It looks goofy.

guess they were trying to cut corners?

They do a silkscreen logo on the low end models. The glued-on pearl looks like someone has tried to counterfeit a Gibson logo. Have they ever done this on another model?

The glued on mop logo is most definitely stock!

I know, I have a 1970 slothead. It's not one of their best aesthetic solutions, it looks like something the 15-years-old me might have done in the 70s. Still, I love the slothead version.

I don't see anything wrong with it. Never gave it a second thought.

I actually like the logo laying on the surface, Gibson has always done interesting things, and yes, I LOVE the Slotted head stock best, and sought this out for that reason - well' and the Mudbucker at the base of the neck.

A very cool bass. May it bring you a ton of joy.

A "slothead" EB-3L is still on my wishlist... :)

For many years all I had was a light 72 Pbass , I thought it was all I'd ever need.
I was an idiot.
I passed on a number of opportunities to pick up EB3s really cheap. Today I favour short scales and would love an EB3 , and really regret my stupidity. I did get an SG , and that has become a favourite bass , but I'd love the original too. Especially a traditional red one.

Every now and then, I do miss the '62 EB-3 I had, with the chrome pinated bakelite pickup cover, and chrome painted bridge pickup surround. Certainly a very specific sound, and the neck on it was a gem. Plus, they look damned cool.

I like that EB-3; the SG body style has always been one of my favorites. Is yours the EB-3L in 34" scale, or the original 30"? The short scale versions have great balance.

Mine is a 30" scale, balances perfectly.
I sat and played it today, just engaging the bridge pickup and a slight EQ on the amp and it's just right there, great to play along to some Free or Cream.

Got it.  My '64 is one of the lightest basses I own, and the neck is thin and very nice to play.

My slothead EB-0L doesn't, but it neck-dives perfectly.

From Fräulein Rommel to Auntie Müd, the mind boggles.

And I always thought your immediate thoughts at the demand Gimme sluthead! were not fit to print, Mark!

I need to get out more, my dirty little mind hadn't even gone there. :-*

I have to admit to being utterly fascinated at first by the amount of bass the Mudbucker can produce - the house wants to rattle apart! Turning it off is hard to do but I only recently tried just the bridge pickup with the tone pretty much rolled off and WoW! It seems to really cop that big, sort of woofy tone of Andy Fraser very nicely, not that I can even remotely get to his skill level.

My Slothead EB-0L is an anti-gun activist.

And people complaining about neck dive all the time just can't get a grip on things.

That one shouldn't neck dive due to the weight of the pickups.....

If you ever want one in pre-butchered original condition, just as John Fitzgerald Gibson intended, you know where to find me.

My EB-0 (@1964 model) was butchered when I got it.  An extra Dimarzio was in place close to the bridge, and there was a swimming pool size hole for a missing mudbucker. IIRC Dave was kind enough to sell me a real mudbucker to fill the hole. I turned the two controls into Vol 1 and Vol 2, as there is no need for a tone knob with the pickups on this bass.  Reducing the treble would be superfluous.

I can't seem to add an image from my computer - the only available icon now links to a URL, not a local file.  Any help?

One thing I'd appreciate is an explanation (if possible) of the #3 and #4 positions of the rotary switch, 1
and 2 are evident. On mine, 3 and 4 do not seem much different and both are rather unremarkable in terms of tone.
What I'd really like to be able to do is blend both of the pickups together in addition to just soloing either of them.

Varitone on a slot head should be 1 neck, 2 bridge, 3 neck chocked plus bridge and 4 is neck choked.
Try rolling the neck pickup volume down to 9 or 8.5 in position 3 with the bridge volume at 10. I think Bob Daisley said that's where he likes to set his. My feeling is these basses are either all or nothing when it comes to the pickups.

Just note that you need to make a small modification to the wiring to be able to individually adjust the pickup volumes.
In their original state the volume pots are wired so that the wiper ends (mid lug) are connected towards the input jack and the pickups on one end. The result is that both volume pots act as master volumes when both pickups are used (position 3). That's a typical Gibson wiring since Les Pauls are wired the same. My 2005 Les Paul Standard Bass used to be wired like that also so I switched places of the wires so that I can roll off some of the bridge pickup volume when using both.
