Well, at least with Flying V basses Gibson were late in the game. Ibanez was like six years earlier.

It's an original Gibson shape, yes, but Dean have adopted that Modernistic Guitars look for their own models for so long and nurtured the image with such dedication that I meanwhile identify any Flying V I see live as either a Gibson or a Dean, the headstock being the tell-tale difference. A Dean doesn't pretend to be a Gibson, it wants to be - chest-beatingly so - a Dean.
Live and let live. It's not a shape you buy just for the casual heck of it and no one who truly wants a Gibson Flying V will settle for a Dean and vice versa.

I believe that Mr. Casady was the first one with a custom made V bass...before Ibanez IIRC, and definitely before Dean, Gibson etc...hopefully no one sues him... ;D
