Can we trade Gwyneth for a return of Rod Evans?
What the world needs now is a Mark 1 reunion. I mean they're all here except for John and the clock is ticking.
Speaking of oh no, I can't figure how this didn't make it as an album cut let alone the lead single. Sounds like a hit to me.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgkO6uTUfLI
and how is Nicky getting that tone? I'd wager its Roto flats with a celluloid pick tone rolled up and the mute in tact under the bridge cover.
Link doesn't work here, which song?
Oh no no no. Bonus track/ studio outtake from The Book of Taliesyn.
Oh, that one!
I don't know what it exactly is (Rod Evans's voice?, the poor man's Vanilla Fudge over-arrangements?, the less than state of the art production and recording?, the lingering 60ies pop influences?, the many covers, all of it?), but all of Mk I's output sounds firmly entrenched in the 60ies for me, quaintly old-fashioned already for 68/69 when it came out. Purple only began to sound like the 70ies (and some people say: opened a new sound era though they weren't the only ones) with In Rock (recorded in the second half of 69 and first half of 70). The first three Mk I albums all sound dated, In Rock sounded like the dawn of a new music age.
Visually, the Mk I line-up was out of touch too with what was going on at the time. When Ian Gillan first met Ritchie Blackmore and Jon Lord in 1969 he was amused by their obviously expensive, but no longer really fashionable or cool Carnaby Street dandy style clothes and their still coiffed-backcombed/teased hair. Having spent a lot of time in America (and there especially on the West Coast) where Mk I had been more popular than anywhere else, they had totally missed the changing vibe of late 60ies London.

By 1970 they looked like this with Gillan and Glover having joined.

"Can we trade Gwyneth for a return of Rod Evans?"
I have doubts whether Gwyneth will ever be able to equal Rod's apparent talent for disappearing off the face of the Earth for at least the last 40 years - he didn't even pick up his RRHF prize in 2016 (nor could anyone establish a prior contact to him). Rumors abound (generally from his former Captain Beyond colleague) how he was initially a hospital orderly turned medical doctor of respiratory therapy, but no pictures of him exist online following the embarrassing and frankly fraudulent "Bogus Purple" incident in 1980.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYuLwQMB7h4&t=4s
Rod's performance at those gigs was nothing to write home about. I think he did fine with Captain Beyond live (judging from bootlegs I've heard), but part of the reason why he lost his job with Purple in 1969 was that he had pitching issues live (when the music got louder) even in his more baritone range. That said, Purple - inspired by how Robert Plant sounded with early Led Zep - were on the lookout for a singer with a piercing falsetto/passaggio or middle voice. Enter Ian Gillan ...
Too bad for Rod, he could have fit right in with a band like Climax, Looking Glass or Hamilton Joe Frank and Reynolds. I hope he's doing well where ever he may be. That 60s pop sound was great and at least the guys sounded masculine instead of a screeching banshee.
As the music became more massive in the 70ies, the vocals had to cut through, especially live.

No word yet as to whether we'll see an economy version of the Vagina Candle. Maybe she's still working on making the fish aroma less intense.
"Maybe she's still working on making the fish aroma less intense."
(visibly aghast) But Dave! Were you really the one to float "Fish Fingers" as the product name for the new budget candle?!
That would be an excellent name! I ought to write to her and suggest it -- in your name, of course.

Those must lack general appeal to you, Dave, all the gold plating in the world cannot cover the fishy smell, can it?
Who said anything about covering up the smell? ???
But that answer reeks of disingenuity, Dave!
Nothing disingenuous about it.

I don't even like fish when it smells like fish, much less so for beaver.
Beaver IS fish. That is at least what European monks argued for centuries so they could eat it during lent (it's supposed to taste fine, plant eater it is). The Catholic Church has always been about making pragmatic exceptions.
I've eaten beaver.
In a stew.
We were in the Yukon where my sister-in-law has a beautiful little camp. Up in the Deep South of the far North , close to Carcross , not far from Whitehorse. A brother-in-law that lives in Ontario was complaining about beavers being a nuisance so he was asking some native friends for advice. They simply said ... eat 'em. And the next day brought a little container with some beaver stew for us to try.
And? How was it? I'd imagine it to taste like hare/rabbit. I've eaten guinea pig in South America, that tasted like hare/rabbit too. Actually more rabbit - there is more of a game taste to hare. Beaver is probably like that as well.
Whether we eat an animal or not - it's all culturally acquired. I tend to be inquisitive and give most things a try. Flying fox bat in the Seychelles was a grainy affair (it was minced meat), but it didn't taste bad at all if you are used to a strong - and like, not all people do - venison/game flavor.
OTOH, I once had wild boar (Wildschwein), which I normally like, and that particular piece (filet actually) really did taste like piss (and not just a bit). Beyond edible - and I'm not bothered by most animal tastes and smells (Edith always says I would have made a perfect zookeeper). We had guests, it was embarrassing, you could not really detect it until you started eating it, but then ... ;D

Those Catholics........ So much kneeling :-*
After my parent marriage was annulled I was Persona non Grata to the Catholic church - that worked out well. I don't think Beaver smells like fish, unless of course.........

The stew was quite bland.
Stuff fro an exotic source often does. Like alligator meat which is so pleasantly tasteless that most children should like it.

What about (o)possum stew, anybody ever tried that? When my son and I took a road trip in the South a few years ago, we tried to find a place which would offer it, but failed miserably. People laughed at us when we asked.
Most of the native food we were eating did not have much , if any , seasoning.

My Stepfather grew up in very rural Arkansas, he said that they ate possum, squirrels etc. often. It was during the depression and WWII, they were poor, when he was old enough to learn to shoot, his father taught him how, and he would hunt for critters. He said possum was greasy and gamey, squirrel was gamey. Fish anyone?

It sounds like it's gonna be Brit humor at its best:
"She's the Goop-founding, Door-Sliding, Shakespeare-In-Loving, consciously-uncoupling Hollywood superstar. He's a retired Optometrist from Utah. In 2016, they went skiing," reads the logline for "Gwyneth Goes Skiing." "On the slopes of Deer Valley, their worlds collided, and so did they — literally. Ouch. Seven years later in 2023, they went to court. Double ouch. This is their story. Kind of. Not really. But also, it's at Christmas."
Could Gwyneth be planning a new product?
