That's good thing!
A black one would make it a pumpkin.

That's an overdrive effect that does not need batteries.
I believe it works with diodes.

The Mod collection bass doesn't look half-bad, the passive distortion is at least an idea.

It can be done with a back-to-back pair of Schottky diodes as they have a low forward voltage so clip with an average passive pickup signal. As a passive circuit this involves a loss of output level.

Even when they were still in production, there was no blinged out model comparable to a LP Custom, I'm not even getting started on Artisan or Supreme. Just like there was no Thunderbird equivalent to the Firebird VII, or an EB3 Custom. It's always the underblinged versions for us.

True, but they were discontinued before these mod shop one-offs were marketed.

The hobbit had multi ply binding but it was top only, and it had a rosewood board, chrome hardware and no maple top. In this respect it was spec'ed even below Standard.
They seem to think that if we like stripped beat to hell Fenders then we'd be grateful for whatever they throw at the bass community. I don't think that a Custom (or Supreme) level bass will be a huge seller for them, but it's nice to know that they think highly of you sometimes.
The Hobbit didn't have appointments like the Les Paul Custom. It was exactly like the Les Paul Recording. In most cases, basses had unbound fretboards & dot necks for an example when their guitar counterpart was much fancier......

No basses this week.
This is interesting: they have converted a 335 to a 25" scale bass and refinished it in a not totally unattractive "Deep Grape Metallic". $4K
I don't quite get the string gauge they went with (.036 .045 .065 .085). With such a short scale, a much heavier gauge will be needed for standard bass tuning. I'm not sure the bridge saddles have enough travel for good intonation with heavier strings. Maybe they didn't want to deal with moving the bridge studs backwards, so they went with a gauge that works. Probably better tune it ADGC Stanley Clarke style.

25" scale bass in standard tuning? No thanks.
I do like the color.
25" scale in standard bass tuning is almost impossible to intonate correctly.
It would probably work as a four string baritone guitar, tuned in B/E/A/D, i.e. five half-steps lower than regular guitar tuning (or seven half-steps higher than bass tuning), but even most baritone guitars have a 28" scale for good reason. Most baritone guitars aren't used for chording anyway, but for playing lead lines.
Or just hang it against the wall and marvel at it.

They were also used in the EB-5 & EB-4 basses made around 2014 & after. The 2019 Les Paul Jr DC bass had one flipped backwards with the pole pieces facing the guitar. We called them Jim DeCola pickups at the time........
Excellent pups - albeit with the birth defect of a very narrow magnetic field, not for people that like to go up high on the neck and push/pull a note a half-step or more up.

Oh, so like Ric button-top neck pickups. No bending up the neck unless you also want a tremolo effect.
The 335 is gone, btw.
I have a 24.75'' scale Samick mini bass that I keep tuned to standard EADG with 45-105 strings. Strings are floppy, and you have to play light to not bend them out of tune. I used to use it as a gag on one song (Hot For Teacher) with a former cover band. The (extra) short scale allowed me to play the tapped intro in unison with the guitarist.
I think it would work as a fun piccolo bass? At regular bass tuning I imagine it will be quite twangy but still dark sounding, with a rumbling undefined fundamental to the notes.
Bass tuning with a 25" scale? As twangy as the morning dick of a 90-year-old, rubbery more like.
At least there's a pill the 90-year-old can take to help with that. Not much you can do with the bass.

No! in fact, the opposite. Piccolo bass is a full scale bass tuned up an octave. It sounds different from a guitar because of the long scale. A 25" guitar tuned an octave above bass is simply
a guitar.

Something he obviously played at the sessions for Rainbow's debut, but I don't know if it was also on the recorded versions - could very well be by the sound of them.
He also played that bass live with Elf when they were still regularly opening for DP. There is a pic of him in the inner gatefold sleeve of Rainbow's debut, but that is from Elf days, Gruber got fired (like all Elf guys with the exception of Ronnie Dio) before he ever got a chance to perform live with Rainbow, they just recorded the debut.

You can see him play it here (audio unfortunately heavily distorted, but a historic artifact, no other footage from late period Elf survives, they were a great band).

On Elf's last album (recorded around the time of the Rainbow debut and hardly released at all so as to not conflict with it) the bass could well be that TBird:

Agreed. It's an ultra long scale guitar. It's the opposite of the EB6, Bass VI, Dano tic-tac etc., that play like guitar but sound like bass.
OTOH Guitar is almost cello range (only a 3rd above), and — this is from Wikipedia —
"in chamber music such as string quartets and the orchestra's string section, [the cello] often plays the bass part. (...) Figured bass music of the Baroque era typically assumes a cello".In Two of us George Harrison is playing the bass part on his Telecaster, and in Red House the bass is played on a Gibson ES335 with the tone rolled off (Noel was unconfident to record on a real bass). Les Paul used to do that too.
Smooth Brown is back in the European Mod Collection. It's the same bass that was offered in the US Mod Collection in December but did not sell. Gibson calls it non-reverse but it's reverse. £2,199 ($2,685) and still there.

Noel Redding played guitar on the studio version of Red House, but he also played guitar on that Live at L'Olympia Paris performance. I think Redding felt uncomfortable playing either guitar or bass with Hendrix. He felt like an inferior guitarist to him, but he also barely considered himself a real bassist, especially at first. I think his confidence in playing bass increased as time progressed. Otherwise, he wouldn't have chosen bass in those post JHE bands such as Road and the Noel Redding Band (in Ireland.) Plus, brief stints on bass with Randy California and even Mountain.

Well, when I do it left handed, it feels like someone else is doing it - Not a bad thing! :-*
When I started, I used to switch hands stroke for stroke and only stroked away from my body (a laborious habit I kicked eventually), I mean I had no manual or anything, this was strictly learning by doing! Mom was supportive in the aftermath though, out of nowhere a tissue box appeared on my nightstand. We never talked about it. ;D
And then that orange thing ... A friend's dad had a paperback with PLAYBOY (or was it PENTHOUSE?) Letters to the Editor, one of them raved how much the writer enjoyed impregnating oranges. Oranges is something you generally have at home, so I gave it a try following instructions painstakingly. Well, what can I say, it's messy and it burns, overrated really. I ate the remnants of the experiment - let nothing go to waste!

Here I thought I was the twisted one!
I was weariong Mom's clothes the first time "it" happened - messy, very messy! Wasn't exactly sure what had happened at first, but it sure felt good, couldn't quit after that!

I don't hate that LP, but I did more or less the same thing to a $200 bass with about $10 worth of acrylic paint.

(It's been this way since about 1997, and I have both sentimental fondness for this paint job and am quite tired of it)
I like it!
It's artsy with a Dennis Dunaway vibe!
