Title: Gary Brooker
Post by: uwe on February 22, 2022, 08:20:20 PM
Gary went on his last cruise. May sixteen vestal virgins greet you skipping the light fandango!

Ok, not that song. Another one, I always liked this here better:

I only saw Procol Harum a few years ago - glad I did, this line-up here with Geoff Whitehorn (of If, Crawler and Roger Chapman) who's been with the band since the early 90ies.

I always dug this here, pretty lively for their usually more somber and melancholic style, that twin attack of a piano and an organ (played by separate players) really made them sound different.

I hadn't even heard about this yet.  Gary Brooker kept sounding great on vocals even as he aged.  Not an easy task for most.  He was a unique talent.  RIP...

Thank you for the alluring intro of that vid, Rob. Only in The Netherlands.

That's Robin Trower, right?

Yes that's Trower.

Not sure if it was a Dutch broadcasting.

In the You Tube comments below the video someone said the performance is from a German Dusty Springfield special.  The DVD (which probably can no longer be found) was called "Dusty in Deutschland."

"The show was broadcast on Monday 15 december 1969 (ARD 21.00) and was subsequently revamped to represent Germany(!) at the 1970 Montreux TV Festival"

I'm too pleased with the recent CD purchases I have made the past few days to want to do anything dastardly to anyone.  As a prime example FedEx earlier today delivered the 5CD "Trouble No More" Allman Brothers box set.  I've just started listening to it, but this looks to be something outstanding.

Sure takes guts to play this tune without an organ. And, yes, Herr Hagar can carry a tune. Imagine what David Lee Roth would have done to it.

Kenny Aaronson is just too cool. Good taste in basses too, though not apparent in this particular vid.  :P

Hagar can sing, IMO.  Not quite in Gary Brooker's league, though.  Brooker's death was a real loss to the music world.

One of the first Thunderbirds I saw in the flesh was Kenny's, when he was with Derringer. At that time, the pickguard was missing, though.

Bell bottom leathers rule, but in my opinion look better on females.

That may be true.  But women seem to have a good track record in curvaceously filling out bell bottoms.

I'm sure Gary Brooker won't mind this:

I'm sure he wouldn't mind.  Besides that, he has definitely been shown genuine respect here.  Ringo Starr, for instance, called "A Whiter Shade of Pale" the greatest song of the 60s.  It would be hard to say for sure, but I think I may agree with him.  Plus, Procol Harum had some other great songs, too.  I've mentioned it before, but Gary Brooker kept being impressive on into his 60s and 70s.  I made a post about that somewhere here several years ago.

Here is a video I just found a few minutes ago.  A good summary.
