Title: Help with old Hofner
Post by: morrow on July 14, 2021, 11:57:11 AM
I have a 70 blade pickup Hofner and the truss rod seems odd .
Does this look right , I bought a 7mm wrench but it doesn’t fit .
The neck has become detached , and will have to be reset , but I will have to get the truss rod adjustable before I get that done .
Any help or advice appreciated .

It looks stripped out but that might just be my eyes.
If that's it there should be a fairly easy fix.

I thought German Höfners use a thinwall hex wrench, like a Gibson but in a metric size. In your pic, I can't tell if the exterior of the truss rod is hex shaped at all.

I bought a 7mm hex wrench but it does not fit the nut that’s on this trussrod . I’m not sure the nut is original . I’m pretty sure that somebody reset the neck at some point before I bought it because there is a clamp mark on the fingerboard . I bought it 35-40 years ago .
I never bonded with the Hofner , it’s been hanging on my living room wall forever . But I decided that I should return it to playing condition . I tend to like shortscale hollow bodies these days . So maybe I’ll come around .
The bridge is stripped , so I have ordered a new one from Germany . And my friend that mostly works on uprights , violins , and cellos is going to reglue and clamp it . If I can get the truss rod addressed it will be off to get set . Heck , I might even splurge and put a set of Maxima Gold flats on it .

No luck finding a truss rod nut with North American Hofner distributors , and after no reply from Thomann I decided to try Marnic in Holland . Five minutes later Ton replied and said he will try to get one .
Things are looking up !

Ton of Marnic knows a lot about Höfner, he has many old parts and he is in close contact with the factory. Great service. Hope it works out well!
