Alas!, environmental protection can be taxing!

She moved into a condor habitat and now she's complaining about the condors.
Well, you can lik'em und still not want them on your porch!
I guess a decomposing cow carcass somewhere in the spacious garden could divert feathered interest. "Carrion wayward son ..." and "lay your weary beak to rest ...", isn't that what they sang?

I think I may have posted this years ago on an old thread In the 1990s I worked with a girl who was once Kerry Livgren's neighbor She asked him how he wrote the song and he said he wrote it while in the bathroom--Now when I hear the song I can't help but think of its humble origins
I couldn't give a crap about its humble origins, it's one of the few rock songs where a combination of binary und ternary rhythms, i.e. straight and shuffle, works. That so often goes wong or sounds awkward. Not here.

It's a great song My co-worker thought so too and was asking him about it as a fan--It's just that I think she was a little taken aback by how candid he was about how he wrote it
So you really did have the shit hit the fan? How needlessly cruel you are.

There were no precise details about exactly what happened It was my impression that when she asked him that she was expecting him to say he wrote it in an inspirational place but it turned out to be just a bathroom--I don't think Kerry Livgren was trying to be crude I suppose the whole thing could be subject to interpretation though
I don't mean to taint the image of the song by bringing any of this up though Maybe it's more interesting to me because the person telling it to me was such a pretty girl That part of the story can be completely lost when told in the form of a post on a forum
Someone at TDPRI came up with a solution to drive the condors away.

I believe that world history is filled with very good bathroom ideas. Nothing wrong with that.
And Kerry Livgren is a spiritual guy whether he's taking a dump or not.

I believe I would have dissolved The Beatles then too. Or asked for Maxwell's silver hammer.

I think the girl telling me the story was probably assuming some things but I wasn't so sure--Be that as it may the song itself to me is on at least the same level as what Procol Harum did with "A Whiter Shade of Pale" in the 60s but "Carry on Wayward Son" has more meaningful lyrics
The Whiter Shade of Pale lyrics have never made any sense to anyone - that includes by their own admission Messrs Reid, Brooker and Fisher, who wrote the darn thing!
I still consider "A Whiter Shade of Pale" a great song despite having some reservations about the lyrics--There used to be a video analyzing the lyrics in depth on You Tube but I can no longer find that
It's a classic, but the lyrics are hogwash.
But then - a-wop-bop-a-loo-bop-a-lop-bam-boom!!! - sensible lyrics aren't always a must.

That's true sensible lyrics aren't always necessary--I guess it depends on the song
As for Kansas just moments ago I got this suggestion on You Tube
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_Jqt9DyjMs
I wasn't interested in everything in that video But it did help me better appreciate how great the vocals are And the same could be said for the vocals in "A Whiter Shade of Pale"
They are the only American Prog band that ever went anywhere - otherwise Prog is very much a Brit phenomenon - with honorary mention of some examples from other European countries.
I saw them live in their heyday - still with Livgren and, yes, Walsh in his hot pants (to his defense, it was an open air festival and a warm day). They had no issues reproducing their music live, in fact it sounded even better than on their albums. They were one of those typically Midwestern outfits well-honed through countless gigs even under the most adverse circumstances.
My favorite Kansas tune is this here:

Kansas definitely stood out--You knew about them whether you were trying to or not--They made their mark
