Some of you who are on Facebook may have already seen it, but I'm pretty excited to let you all know that the new -limited- edition of The Gibson Bass Book is available!.
Some newly discovered basses were added, such as the Bunny Brunel Signature Bass and the 1959 Explorer. Plus of course the ones that Gibson released after the first edition of the book was printed (in 2016). The Epiphone chapter was extended and there is a spread about Orvilles and Kalamazoo. And there's even a spread The Heritage!
So here it is: A brand new version of The Gibson Bass Book with 204 pages full of Gibson bass guitars.
More than 85 different Gibson bass models are featured with unique photographs and descriptions.
Hardback Deluxe edition. Pages printed in full colour on Machine Coated paper. The page size is 210 x 297 cm (A4).
Only 100 copies were made.

Nice, Rob! I'm not on Facebook, so this is the first I've heard. Are left-handed models considered unique enough to be featured in the book?
Glad Dave let me post it here then ;-)
And no, I'm afraid I haven't featured any left-handed models in the book. They're basically the same as the right-handed ones.
Maybe I should mirror the entire book and make an ultra limited edition of 10 Left-Handed Gibson Bass Books
Sign me up!
I totally understand that. For me, the left-handed Gibson Thunderbird in 2013 was a dream come true. I'd always loved them and wanted one, occasionally considering finding a Tokai, but never followed thorough. Then 2013 hit and I grabbed one and it's pretty much all I've played since.
Just ordered a copy!
Thank you.
Your book is # 27. I'll send it monday. Post office is closed over here now.
I just ordered a copy also, looks great!
Really cool!
If I wasn't irrationally anti-paper, I'd order one.
Congratulations, Rob. :toast:
Will Uwe now be prodded into buying that Gibson Bunny Brunel that's still up on Reverb?
Ordered!
Ordered over the weekend! Yay!
Thank you guys!
Ordered it too!
I also ordered one.
Rob's gonna sell out at this rate!
It is going much faster than I had expected yes.
Ordered mine! I missed the first edition, looking forward to it.
I got it in yesterday and I'm a bit disappointed, to be honest.
Too much basses I haven't got

Nice, Rob! Looking forward to getting mine.
Thank you guys.
It may take a while for the book to arrive in countries outside Europe. The people at the post office told me there have been quite a few delays since the whole Corona thing...
So please bear with me.
Not your fault or problem, Rob. It'll eventually get here. I ordered a CD and it took over two weeks to get here from Kentucky to NYC. Seemed to sit at my local post office for most of that time.
Damn, you sell Gibson bass books faster than Gibson sells Gibson bass guitars!
Mine (#98) arrived today. Very nice additions to the first edition and great work Rob!
Good to know! That tells me the shipments within Europe probably all went without too much trouble. Despite the Corona crisis.
Shipments to the USA, Canada and other overseas parts of the world may take a bit longer than normal.
Although I did get an email from Bunny Brunel that his book arrived last saturday. He lives in California.
Wot, no Second Edition? I want one too!
Besides, you forgot the new "By the Pussy" Grabber BTP signature bass.

Thank you Mark.
So the books are slowly showing up in the USA too.
I got an email yesterday from a customer who bought one of the last books of the first edition on April 20th. His book was delivered on May27th...
Well, I guess the good news is they do show up. But it does take v...e...r...y l...o...n...g... :-[
With the combination of Covid-19 & the rioting going on in Minneapolis, mine might take a while yet......

Hopefully not, since you live far enough away from the affected areas, but things won't be back to normal in Minneapolis and St. Paul proper for a long time.
My mail was just delivered. Some of the facilities in Minneapolis & St Paul were shut down yesterday. If mail passes through those facilities to get here, it might get delayed. Not sure if they've reopened today. No book yet.

There was a sizeable demonstration in Denver last night. One of my daughters was on her apartment balcony and saw the SWAT team go by - about 14 guys in full gear hanging onto racks and footrails mounted on a big van.

It doesn't pass through any of those facilities, and I doubt they'll open soon. But overall service in the metro could be affected, we'll just have to wait and see.
I finally had some disposable funds to order one and it's sold out. :-[ Bad for me, but good for Rob!
I believe he mentioned a soft-back version, George... what I'm contemplating as funds lacked for me too...

Update to my earlier reply, from my former mail carrier, an hour ago: "Thankfully, the Minnehaha post office in the pictures as well as 2 others were completely closed today and no one was in the buildings, but still. I've heard they've closed off the main post office downtown Mpls so I don't what that means for us tomorrow or if we'll even have mail to deliver."

Agent Smith was right... likening "us" to a "virus" in the Matrix film...
It just takes the blink of an eye to turn "us" from civilised to feral... it would be an insult to animals to use that word... we do not deserve this place...
Having wandered in, I shall just wander back out...
Any LBOers in the USA getting their books yet?

We'll get through these tribulations. Stay optimistic for the future generations. Even in our darkest hours, hope remains. When systems turn people against each other, there always are those who refuse the narrative and choose to accept the light of G-d. My father would not have survived an episode in Baghdad if not for the help of some neighbors offering shelter. I can't loose faith in humanity and neither should you. This too shall pass.
Indeed.. Shabbat Shalom, my friend...

Mark told me he received his.
What's the story on the floppy-copy, Rob...?
what is a floppy-copy?
The books were sent as a regular letters without tracking code in order to keep the shipping cost reasonable (€9). If I had sent them with a tracking code the shipping cost would have been €29.
Today I spoke with PostNL (Dutch Postal Services) about the delays. And the lady on the phone told me that they have had huge problems with shipping overseas, because the regular daily flights were all cancelled.
At a certain point they even chose to send some mail via a container ship as an alternative.
Now the flights are slowly picking up again. But there are still huge amounts of mail waiting at the airport to be flown to the USA and Canada.
The delay can amount up to 60 days!
I was devastated when I heard her say that. It means that it may take another month for you (and so many others) to receive the book...
I wish I had better news to bring to you. But this all I can say.

Ah the soft cover version.
Well I got a message from the printer today that the books are on their way from Germany to The Netherlands.
So I hope to have them available early next week
Thanks for the delivery update! We will look forward to receiving it whenever it gets here. These strange times are effecting many things that we use to take for granted......
Slowly but surely the limited edition books are starting to trickle in at addresses in the USA, Canada and Australia.
All week I've been getting emails from customers telling me their book finally turned up. :)
The new soft cover edition will have to wait a bit longer.
I discarded the entire batch that was delivered from the printer's.
Too much damage and overall bad quality... :-\
Mine just showed up this morning. Somewhere along the trip it took in some water. Smells pretty moldy so it likely happened a while ago. Too bad, looks like a great book!

Rob, it wasn't your fault you did every right! Probably from sitting around due to Covid-19 delays......
I'll board my Junkers 52 with my chute if I don't get one. Watch your dams.
You'll have be a little more patient, because your fellow countrymen from the printing company f•cked up the third run.
The books arrived last week and most of them got damaged during transport because they used flimsy cardboard boxes. Or too many books per box. The boxes were all torn.
Plus the binding machine apparently needed some attention too, as there was also damage inside the books.

After much debate I refused this batch and sent it back.
They're making a new run as we speak.
Sorry about the delivery problems.
I wanted to report that mine arrived yesterday in NYC and it looks beautiful! Thank you for this excellent work.
I'm amazed at how much is in here.
That is excellent news Paul.
Enjoy the book.
And pssst.... Check page 75 ;)
We Dutchies live below sea level in some kind of Sponge Bob World. So it isn't strange if books are wet.
And BTW thanks, Uwe! At the end of the war a big part of were I live (an area called the Wieringermeer, once a lake, now land) was flooded by you guys just to run havoc. No use for defense at all. But when the lake was made dry again, we discoverd the tulips grew better. Now we flood the tulip fields ourselves every year. But we do keep the houses dry now.

Picking up mine noooooooooow ....
Or are you bringing it?
The new batch should have been here two days ago, from Germany...
 :rimshot:
The new books have finally been delivered. It took the printer way too long.
And even now with this second time (after I rejected the entire previous batch) they managed to ruin part of the batch by using too flimsy cardboard boxes for the shipment. About 10% of the shipment got damaged during the journey from the printer to my place. But at least I can start selling the other 90% after two months of waiting...
I don't think I'll do business with those donkeys again. :o
That's too bad. You would think they would take extra care after what happened last time. At least you have most of the shipment to sell.
Sorry to hear that! My copy is beautiful.

Very nice of them.
Great review and absolutely true!
Hayley, the host, could help us with a braille version of the book, she is blind as you might have noticed.
"Hayley is a recording artist performer and music teacher.
Having been trained as an opera singer, Hayley made the transition to contemporary music/indie folk where she enjoys writing and recording her own original works with new songs to be released every 4-6 weeks.
Hayley loves to teach music. Her teaching career began after she completed a degree at the Conservatorium of Music. She teaches singing, piano and music theory. Her skill set also includes teaching braille music for vision impaired students."
Kudos to her for giving so much space to something she cannot even see. She has a beautiful voice.

So is there a new edition with the new non-reverse Thunderbird?
No. The current edition is from 2020.
The new NR Tbird had not been released when the third edition of the book came out.
The old video of On The Couch is gone.
Today the guys from Down Under surprised me with a new video about the Gibson Bass Book.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YhZ1yLHVltg
High praise from them. :toast:
It's a great book.
Went to a John Waite concert in the city of Arnhem last night.
His voice has held up amazingly well. It was a great show. A combination of acoustic and electric arrangements.
He had a special guest musician sharing the stage on two songs: Rinus Gerritsen!
I took the opportunity to give Rinus the third edition of the Gibson Bass Book. He received the official first one, six years ago at the presentation party of the book at Gibson HQ in Amsterdam.
Told him he can burn the first edition this winter to try and save on gas cost (prices have gone up factor 4 over here)
And I brought an extra copy of the book just in case I could hand one over to John Waite. I figured him being a bass player he would probably be interested too.
Turns out he really still loves the bass. He still has the famous Zemaitis bass he sported back in the seventies with The Babys. And he told me he writes his songs on the bass a lot.
When he saw the pic on the cover of the book he said: "ah the EB-2D!"
So he really knows a thing or two about Gibson basses!

Congrats! Great story!
Very cool!
Super cool. He's got a great voice. He is also responsible for my interest in Les Paul style basses, having seen him on TV playing one (the Zemaitis) when I was first starting out. I thought that bass had been stolen? Maybe he got it back, or there were two different ones?
Very cool. I was a big fan of both the Babys and his solo career. I used to go see his shows whenever he played in LA, but it's been over 20 years since the last time. I'm glad to hear he still plays bass (I was bummed when the Babys got Ricky Phillips instead).
You watch Rob get famous with that book!
John Waite is my favorite Don Henley voice outside of the Eagles.
Seriously, I really like his music too. And he's wry about the inevitable comparison:
One thing I noticed about you, and other singers who aren't born in America, is you have a great tone when you sing. I was recently comparing you to Don Henley the other day. I said to my friend, "John Waite is just as good as Don Henley."
Oh, I'm better (laughs).
But you don't get the credit for it and that's a big part of the reason why I wanted to do this interview. I think your tone is perfect. And the thing that I find interesting is whether it's Tom Jones or whether it's you, or another singer, a lot of times the diction of singers who aren't from America is better than the diction of those who were born here.
Yeah, it's funny. And you mentioned Tom; he really rips it up, he's great. I mean, he's really great. I don't know. You look at Steve Marriott and Paul Rodgers, I mean, maybe you need to come from outside to bring something to it to make it bigger than what it is. I don't know.
I was very conscious when I first came to America that there was a white-band thing where they were playing music that was kind of white. But in England we were all listening to blues, blues rock. I was just thinking, before I called, about the jukebox at my local coffee hangout when I was a kid. I was 14 and they had music by Otis Redding, the Temptations, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, you name it. But it was 99.9% American. Although my heritage is British, my heart is really American.
This is purdy.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LlJNoLQf9wA
A good song in any form.
I do think that in this version the twelve string guitar(?) clamouring for attention a bit too much.
John's voice and the guitar don't gel very well, in my opinion.
Yeah, I know what you mean, what the guitar plays is perhaps a bit overwrought/too worked out, more cerebral than natural.
