The listing claims.... Tech Notes: During this era Gibson was known to paint black over cherry instruments to fulfill orders for black ones. This is an original black finish over cherry base coats. The serial number dates to 1967.
Has anybody ever heard of this before??
I've never heard of this. Even if it's true, that doesn't mean this bass is one of them. Without any supporting evidence this ought to be considered a refin.
Custom colour or not, that's an insane price for an EB-2...
BTW, I have seen and played a black EB-2 of the similar vintage, so they are out there.
I checked it out a couple of weeks ago when in Chicago for a gig. It didn't appear to me to be the original finish, and it didn't play that well either. They also had a hacked up fretless EB2 that played pretty well.
They also have a factory black EB-3L and two black Grabber's. Someone should sniff around in that shop, I bet their backroom has a whiff of cellulose :)
Wrong bridge for a '67, no matter if it's an early or late one.
At that time, they were having trouble with tops cracking. They ended up filling the cracks & spraying them "Sparkling Burgundy". They improved their kiln drying process & this was remedied. No info out there about some being sprayed black over cherry.

It appears the bridge has been slotted pretty deep in order to bring the action down to an acceptable point, instead of a neck reset. Can't do that with the late bar bridge, as it's not solid like the earlier one.

If it sells at this price, they would make good money even if they threw in a neck reset and a correct bridge :-\
